While in St. James she stayed with the Gary Wolners, Dr. Glaydem Kern's, and Vance Watkins. Between school and Rotary activities she was kept very busy, but before she left she remarked, It was a wonderful year and I'll never forget it. On January 6 and 7, we also had thirteen foreign students roaming the halls who were participating in the Student Council's Foreign Exchange Festival. They came on a Thursday and left that Saturday spending most of their time in school or at related activities. Dolores, once more classified as a Senior, (she grad- uated in the Philipines) took mostly senior classes during her year at St. James. Walking from class to class made many new friends for Dolores, and very soon she was one of us! Many exchange students from the surrounding area came to visit Dolores on Jan. 6-7. They attended the Was- eca Basketball game in addition to attending classes. A dance followed the game. 26 FOOTBALL Determined Team Compiles 6-3 Record 'A' SQUAD: ROW 1: B. Goor, T. Schiller, S. Coaches: Mr. Johnson, Mr. Rasmussen, Mr. Emerson, Mr. Dose, and Mr. Price. PRIDE and SELF DEVELOPMENT would be the two key words that would charac - terize the 1976 fighting Saints football squad. It took a great deal of pride to go through the weeks of hard drills, first in hot, humid weather, then in freezing tem- peratures, in order to develop into a win- ning football team. This year's squad was willing to pay that price, as a result they developed themselves into a winning foot- ball team, with a winning attitude. Award winners on this year's team include: Tri- Captains: Matt Gosche, Dan Sturm, and Greg Windschill: most valuable linemen: Brad Klebel, Blaine Goor, Most Valuable back: Greg Windschill, Most Improved player: Charles Stark, All Conference: Terry Schiller, Greg Windschill, Blaine Goor, and Brad Klebel. Only one to get by for a touchdown, but Dave Zumwalt can't quite make it, and gets nailed. B SQUAD: ROW 1- J. Esser, R. Pierson, B. Coleman, T. Hoffman, T. Schmidtke, M. Sandburg, J. Panzer, D. VOLLEYBALL Girls Play With Determination The Volleyball team started out with lots of enthusiasm, hope and winning power with four returning letter winners. All were eager to go out and win for St. James. Their record 6-9 doesn't show the desire and determination displayed by the Saintlys, who beat Minnesota Lake in the first round of the district tourney. Then lost to Mapelton 0-2 in the semi-finals. The team's co-captains were Mary Plum- hoff and Julie Newberg, and the coaches were Sharon Euerle and Pat Branstad. Voted most valuable player was Julie Curry, while Bernie Reinke served the most points during the season. There were 9 letterwinners this year with 5 re- turning next year. So the team says Wait till next year! A SQUAD: J. Branstad, L. Landsteiner, M. Toussaint, B. Reinke, STANDING: D. Ayres, J. Newberg, M. Plum- hoff, J. Curry, Mgr. J. Rust, Coach Euerle C SQUAD: J. CROSS COUNTRY Runners Win District Mausling 4th In State What in one season, ran 3,477 miles on 28 legs? Why, our cross country team of course! This year’s record is proof of their hard work and endurance. Led by Captain Paul Mausling, scoring nine wans and two losses in dual meets, they cap- tured the district title, placed third at the Mountain Lake Invitational and Worthing- ton Turkey Trot and fourth in the region and conference. Hanked by Winkelman, Moulton, and High, Paul Mausling proudly displays the trophy for the District 6 championship which the team has just won. Voted most valuable was Paul Mausling, who placed 4th at the individual state meet. Next year, Joe Zender and Jerry High will be co-captains of four other returning lettermen. So to them we say, keep on trotting. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM: B. Borchardt, T. Anderson, J. Bergman, K. Welchlin, M. Bergman, D. Taylor, J. Zender. STANDING: Coach Hanson, W. Winkelman, J. Schmitz, P. Mausling, B. Moulton, J. High. 77 With only two years of experience it takes much prac- tice and instruction to become champions. GIRLS TENNIS Experience, Practice Bring Results. It's difficult to start a new sport with few participants who have had experience. This is the case with the girls' tennis team. Just two years ago the team was begun. Needless to say, they won no matches. This year the first two wins were recorded. There were ten losses, but with all but three letter winners returning, coach Koch assures that more wins will be recorded. Captaining the squad next season will be Pat Rentz, and also returning is the squad's most valuable this year, Ruth Dettman. 32 GIRLS' TENNIS SQUAD: L. Bolland, L. Gundlach, K. Hansen, D. Suarez, P. Johnson, J. Moulton, J. Eiden. STANDING: Coach Koch, K. Thompson, P. Rentz, L. Nelson, R. Dettman, B. Klebel, L. Mueller, D. Ammann. Jim Anderson gets his Holiday tourney opponent in a predicament. Jim went on to win his weight class. WRESTLING Grapplers Work Hard To Achieve Victories. With eight returning lettermen, Coach A1 Adams had thought that there would be a chance of another super season. But events did not happen this way. The record was 7-8-1 for the year. However there were a number of bright spots. The Saints were District 6 champs, Watonwan Co. Champs, 2nd in Conference and Christmas Tournaments. Marv Augustin and Blaine Goor qualified for the individual state meet by winning in the Region. There were five District champs and 3 conference winners. Rick Aden was most improved, Blaine Goor the most valuable, and the captains for next year are Marv Augustin and Dave Sturm. 33 A SQUAD: D. Coleman, R. Zumwalt, D. Hagen, D. Sturm, J. Frisch, M. GYMNASTICS Girls Continue To Improve Steadily The girls gymnasts are a young group- only 2 seniors are on the squad, so im- provement shows almost daily. The year's record of 11-4 was 2 meets less than last year when the record was 12-5. This year's team went to the sectional tourney, and had six letterwinners. The most valuable was Laurie Garner and the Captains for next year are Mary Sturm, Kris Wolle and Michelle Tous- saint. The team's coach is Julie Struss. 37 GYMNASTICS: J. Rathman (mgr. ) C. Rennick, L. Garner, L. Tenney, K. Parsons, M. Toussaint, C Pronk, D. Flatau, M. Sturm, J. Lofgren (mgr. ) ROW 2: Coach Struss, C. Thompson, B. Klebel, N. Restoroff, J. Blanch- fleld, T. Grossklags, S. Hatting, K, Wolle, D, Roeglin, J. Moulton. BOYS BASKETBALL Wins Prove To Be Elusive For Cagers Season Decided By One Point In Overtime Headed by Captain Matt Gosche, our bas- ketball team was stopped in District Finals by a score of 43 -42 in overtime, yet as a whole, the team had some fantastic play- ers. Mike Brandts, voted most valuable player, by the team, was also high scorer with 222 points. Randy Nessler was the recipient of the Free Throw Award and Greg Winds chi 11 of the Most Improved Player. As for next year, the outlook is good, with six of the ten lettermen returning to be headed by co-captains Mike Brandts and Randy Nessler. If all goes well it will be a great season for St. James Saints. Once more, in spite of a 6-15 record, the Saints were in the battle for most every game. As Dave Panzer grabs a rebound, he looks for a team' mate to pass the ball to. VARSITY BASKETBALL: W. Hatting, (mgr), R. Nessler, C. Windschill, M Swenson, J. Petersen. ST- ANDING: Coach Koch, J. GIRLS BASKETBALL REBUILDING THE TEAM A MUST FOR NEXT YEAR Records for this year's Girls Basketball season stand as this: C Squad - 1 win - 4 losses B Squad - 6 wins - 8 losses Season Record - 9 wins - 7 losses Conference Record - 3 wins - 3 losses Although the season was a little rough, the girls still came off the courts with an average of 34.2 points per game compared to their opponent's average of 31.1. Robin Ankeny was high scorer while Mary Plumhoff was voted the most valuable player. Already the girls have begun planning for next year choosing Bemie Reinke and Brenda Curry as co-captains. They hap- pen to be the only returning lettermen. This very obviously means a big re- building job. Hopefully, good help will come from this year's B and C squads. B Squad: B. Quindel, L. The gals put in a lot of hard work and dedication to compile a 6-2 record. Many personal records were broken. Among these were Karen Stradtman setting a new record in the shot put, Kris Johnson throwing the discus 100' 11 1 2 and Diane Bergquist setting a school record with a 4' 8 1 4 jump in the high jump. In the running events Laure Gamer broke the previous 2-mile record by running it in 12:59. A new mile relay record was set by the 4-some of Bemie Reinke, Kris Wolle, Laure Gamer and Tilly Sorbel. The entire team should be proud of its performances in the St. James Olympia, the Southwest Confer- ence and the District 6 meet. The co- captains were Mary Ross iter and Laure Gamer. Most valuable to Diane Berg- quist. Here's to a great season! Lotsa luck next year! Another relay victory for the girls as Denise Roeglin sprints home the winner. GIRLS TRACK-ROW 1: P. Johnson, K. Parsons, J. Barker, B. Reinke, K. Wolle, B. Klebel, ROW 2: D. Roeglin, D. Flaata, T. Sorbel, B. Quindel, S. Augustin, L. Jacoby, M. Rossiter, J. Moulton, C. Gamer, ROW 3: Coach Struss, L. Coming from far behind the, thinclads came storming back in the track events to win the District Six title. It was a good win after a rather up and down year. The Saints displayed power in winning their own Olympiad meet, then the team could not hold its own against the Con- ference contenders. As of the District meet, the record was 7-5; with the Regional to go. Senior Paul Mausling in the 2 mile run was a very strong favorite in every 2 mile race, winning most of them, and Junior Jerry High set records in the half mile. Vaulter Rory Pietsch was voted most valuable. Next year looks good with a strong nucleus to build on led by cap- tains Jerry High and Brian Moulton. Races don't come any closer than this! Paul Mausling beats his Slayton opponent by the hair on his legs in the Olympiad two-mile run. BOYS TRACK - ROW 1: Coach Rasmussan, K. Knickrehm, K. Welchlin, J. Bergman, T. Knaack, S. Schmesing, S. Reinke, P. Mausling, M. Bergman, T. Anderson, B. Tiedeken, K. Flynn. ROW 2: B. Borchardt, J. High, W. Hatting, B. Moulton, R. Pietsch, B. Klebel, K. Kolstad, J. Zender, B. Curry, K. Fredrickson, ROW 3: Coach Pulver, J. Garland, M. Witte, S. Nelson, T. Nelson, R. Ankeny, M. Flohrs, M. Anderson, M. Watkins, L. Wie- derhoeft, M. Brandts, T. Koch, G. Windschill, M. Zender, Coach Hanson. 42 There were many close races this year. Brian Moulton (TOP) appears to have his relay opponent beaten by helf a step. LEFT: Jerry High did excellent work in setting a new school record in the half mile. RIGHT: Rory Pietsch clears the bar at a good height in the pole vault. 43 BASEBALL Young Saints Take District Title. Using mostly Juniors Sophomores, Coach Schmidtke outclassed other teams to win the District six Championship. Without a pitcher with varsity experience and only a couple of seniors in the line- up, the team developed into a strong de- fensive unit with excellent spirit. The bulk of the pitching duties were shared by St. John, Nelson, and Schmidtke while Gosche and Kohn did the catching and some fine infield play kept many games very close. Second team Coach Price worked hard with the team and by tournament time six were ready to play varsity ball. The year's record was only 6-10, but prospects are excellent for next year, and another District Championship. The leading hitters were Schmidtke, Nessler, and Petersen. Catcher Matt Gosche has just caught the ball (in his glove) to complete a force-out at home plate. 44 VARSITY BASEBALL-ROW 1: R. Johnson, J. Ziebarth, E. Mensen, M. Gosche, D. Nelson, G. St. John, M. Kohn, J. Esser, ROW 2: Coach Price, T. Schmidtke, S. Wiederhoeft, J. Peterson, R. Nessler, T. Schiller, B. Coleman, M. Augustin, Coach Schmidtke. B SQUAD BASEBALL - ROW 1: A. Widening, T. Hoffman, J. Veglahn, M. Kohn, D. Bottom, M. Houge. ROW 2: Coach Price, D. Hagen, D. Lenz, M. Sandberg, S. Sanders. C SQUAD BASEBALL - ROW 1: L. Swanson, B. Wolner, C. Ber- onius, T. Resick, J. Nelson, L. Zam, G. Menssen, L. Anderson, ROW 2: Coach Price, D. Stowe, D. Coleman, D. Lenz, T. Sukohl, T. Gay, T. Blackstad, Coach Hanson. LEFT: One of the leading hitters on the team, Jim Petersen has just completed that very satisfying journey around the bases after hitting a home run. Tins helped him become the most valuable player on the squad, as voted by the others. V; 45 Gail Kurtzweg takes a lesson from Mark Swenson on the fine art of chipping! GOLF-BOYS AND GIRLS Prospects Good For Both Teams Next Year An early spring and good weather condi- tions (most of the time) made this and en- joyable season. Despite this, the teams posted a little under-the-weather rec- ord of 2-12 for the boys and 3-5 for the girls. Boys coach Len Dalen attributed this to lack of consistency. There are only 2 seniors on the boys team, Scott Nelson and Brian Johnson, so next year should have an experienced team. Terry Koch and Scott Nelson qualified for the Region at Slayton. The girls need more experience since golf is a very new sport for them, but inspite of the lack of this very necessary ingredient the girls gave a good account of themselves in compe- tition, several for the first time. BOYS GOLF: J. Underdahl, B. Tiedeken, T. Lupke, T. Wright, S. Schulte, D. Mausling, G. Riemersma, K. Welchlin. ROW 2: R. Eppeland, S. Nelson, T. Koch, D. Stensrud, S. Clawson, B. Johnson. ROW 3: D. Gratz, D. Lenzen , T. Nelson, R. Thompson, M. Swenson, Coach Dalen. GIRLS GOLF: C. Eppeland, D. Suarez, M. Ziebarth, J. Lofgren, G. Kurtzweg, D. Ask, K. Wolner, G. Holte, J. Asendorf, Coach Becker. TENNIS Players Must “Love” The Game To Be Good The boy's tennis team finished off their season with a 4-7 record. TTie tennis being played was better than the record shows because most of the matches were very close and decided by a few points. In the Martin Luther Academy Invitation- al-tourney, the guys placed 5th out of eight teams. Out of the 10 letter winners, Dave Panzer and Roger Larson are the only two graduating. So, the Mighty Saints are looking tough for next year. Attempts to serve aces have always been a major part of any tennis match. TENNIS SQUAD - ROW 1: R. Schultz, M. Doll, D. Haler, D. Malmgren, R. Larson, K. Jacoby, C. Shellum, J. Panzer. ROW 2: K. Lastine, D. Panzer, T. Bodin, W. Jurgens, R. Aden, K. Thompson, J. Schmitz, Coach Koch. CHEERLEADERS Promoting Spirit Is Very Hard Work. Cheerleaders, according to the admini- stration, are more than just the name. This year's cheerleaders not only pro- moted school spirit, they practiced 3 nights a week, cheered at an average of 4 nights a week from Sept. -Feb., made locker decorations and posters (Like tha James Gang Hats at the right), planned and held pep fests, and earned money to buy the players cupcakes. In the Home- coming week alone, they spent 150+ hours in preparation for the big game. This included decoration of the players' and coach’s homes, a coronation skit, and a pep fest in the park. This year's co-captains, Joni and Pat, spent many hours planning and the rest of the 20 cheerleaders with them spent all their spare time promoting and supporting our athletics. So, this proved to be one of the busiest and best years that St. J. cheer- leaders have ever had. TO OUR SAINTS Dear Lord, in the battle that goes on through life; I ask but a field that is fair; A chance that is equal with all in the strife, And courage to strive and to dare. And if I should win, let it be by the code, With my faith and honor held high; And if I should lose, let me stand by the road And cheer as the winner goes by, -Athlete's Prayer A: SQUAD CHEERLEADERS: C. If you want to to belong the SAINTETTES you must be abie to do some pretty high kicking, as demonstrated by the girls here. Under the guidance of Deb Loeschen and Pam Pearson, the SAINTETTES danced their way through nine performances this year. Most were at basketball games and wrestling matches, but they also won a first place trophy at the Annandale Invita- tional, and will compete in the State Meet sometime after the yearbook goes to press. Practice begins officially when school starts, but the girls do much on their own during the summer. Any girl from grades 9 through 12 who wants to join may do so by attending two one and half hour practices each week. Its a tough schedule, especially if you're not in shape to begin with. so SAINTETTES: L. Deinhart, C. Downs, J. Forseth, M. Revne, J. Sorbel, J. Branstad. STANDING: J. Jacobson, S. Kern, S. Kern, G. Float preparation began the previous week, ear- lier than usual. Tuesday was the corona- tion with last year’s queen, Trudy Olson, crowing King Dave and he in turn crowned Queen Pat amid the cheers of a packed gym. The stage band played, the madrigals sang, and the cheerleaders cheered! Thursday the sensous seniors tromped the juniors in the powderpuff game after the sophomores had defeated the frosh. Finally the climax of the week, Friday! The parade grew in size this year with the sophs winning first place. At 7:30 the band struck up with the school song and the big battle against New Ulm began. Of course the mighty Saints sent the Eagles flying , 14-0. Following the game, 30 Grand played for the Vic- tory Dance. All in all it was a great week! As has been the case since their beginn - ing, the CANDYSTRIPERS once more had a busy year bringing joy, a friendly smile and their helping hands to the residents of Pleasant View Center, the Park Apart- ments, and the Hospital. Again they took an active part in making the Halloween and Christmas parties at those places a huge success. One of their big projects was assisting with the Bloodmobile program. Their job was to solicit blood doners by telephone. According to Mrs. Egge, the adviser, there were 32 sophomores 24 juniors, and 8 seniors taking part in the capping and pinning ceremonies last September, 30. They attend all girls athletic events and cheer them on to vic- tory. Their yells are quite unconvention- al, but they are very much appreciated by both players and fans. Even though this is a new organization, the guys sure have a GAS! German Club This is another newly formed club in our school. They have presented programs in German for the residents of Pleasant View. They went Christmas caroling throughout St. James. Their main ob- jective is to learn about German culture and share it with others in our commun- ity. Eleven lucky members of the club along with their advisor Mrs. Branstad, spent 16 days in Germany this spring. Go, Girls Go!! The G.A.S. gang gives the girls go power! 63 FHA FHA Activities “Rock And Roll” This year the FHA girls have kept them- selves busy with their Rocking and Roll- ing activities. In the fall they went rol- lerskating with the FFA. For Christmas they sung at Pleasantview and at the Hos - pital, then returned to the school for the annual Christmas party. FHA week was celebrated Feb. 14-18 and each day was highlighted with a special activity; A Mr. Irresistable was selected for each grade, FHA colors, day was ob- served, and rolls and coffee were served to the faculty one morning for breakfast. One of the large service projects for the year was the Rock-a-thon for cancer. Um-m-m good! During FHA week, the girls served break- fast to the faculty. Advertising events of FHA week was this display in the library display case. Some events included color day, Mr. Irresistible contest, and a faculty breakfast. For a number of reasons the annual FFA-FHA breakfast was not well attended, 90 the faculty was invited to their second breakfast of the year from the FHA. It consisted of scrambled eggs, bacon, muffins, juice, and coffee. 65 FFA Hard Work Pays Off In Success. The 1976-77 membership increased from 96 to 130 members, including eight girls and 24 grads. The busy year included the usual crop show and banquet, judging contests, raising mal- lard ducks and pheasants, and Operation Rainguage. Something new occurred in that Farmfest- '76 was held at Lake Crystal, and for this week-long event the FFA hosted guests from North Dakota and Illinois. There were fourteen local Proficiency Award winners, five of whom got through the District contest-Wayne Winkelman, Rick Haler, Renee Fischer, Dave Holm, and Glen Kubly. Holm and Haler win in the Region, and Haler will compete Nationally in Dairy Production during the summer. Rick Haler displays his champion dairy ani- mal at the Watonwan County Fair. Julie Sorbel and Kathy Fjermestad did just that over 11 other contestants. O.E.A. Most of us know OEA only by their green sweaters and their work in the concession stand during football, basketball, and wrestling tournaments, but that is far from their only activity. While most of us sat in class they were busy attending the State Fall Conference, the Spring Leader- ship Conference, and Region Contests. One big payoff came when Deb Taylor was elected Region Treasurer at the Region 12 Fall Conference. At Christmas they went caroling at Pleasant View, held a party there and then passed out Fruit Baskets. For themselves they held a Christmas party at the home of their Advisor, Mr. Dalen, and at least one spring outing for dinner was planned. 68 O.E.A D. Taylor, D. Four members con- tinued in Region competition. They were Brian Johnson, Laurel Vanderbilt, Teresa Jacoby, and Launette Gundlach. This year's One-Act Play was selected by Mr. Plumhoff because it was different. It was the story of actors and actresses do- ing a play about which they knew nothing. They won the sub-district competition, and were chosen as the alternate in the District. Elwood's sister finally decides that being kind and a lit- tle crazy is sometimes better than sanity and does not commit Elwood to an institution. Along with putting out the paper, other chores consist of selling adds and work in the concession stand with SA1NTONIAN staff members to raise money for each issue, (there's also a little matter of clean- ing up the football field after each home game-ugh!!) 72 The responsibility for page lay-out goes to M. The period after a big event (such as our Bicentennial Year) is usually anti- climactic, and rather difficult to get things moving after an extra effort has been made. What to do that's different?? The staff decided that our budget could take four pages of color instead of two, and also use the new cover design which as we understand, has not been used be- fore this year. The next thing was to get out a book!! This proved to be quite a big task with obstacles such as fuel shortages, com- petition for student time, and a school photography staff working just because they liked to take pictures, (they had no budget to speak of) But with determination, and help from a loyal bunch of freshmen and sopho- mores the job was completed. During the summer they marched in several parades through- out the area, and prepared concerts for the 4th of July and State Fair. An exciting addition to the band room over the summer was the red carpet- ing. Throughout the year, the band performed at Augustana's Viking Days, the Harvest Holiday Concert, Mid-Winter Concert, and Spring Con- cert. This was also the year for the band tour. They went on a 3 day trip to Madison and Milwaukee, Wiscon- son. The band members were also busy individually with ensembles and solos and represented our school well in district and regional contests. One of the highlights of the year for the band was being cho- sen Band-of-the-Week on WCCO radio last fall. Then the Christmas season was marked by a KEYC T. V. appearance and home concert featuring The Song of Christmas with tableau and narration and the debut of the 100-member Varsity Choir. The choir was very successful in district contests achieving 21 star ratings. Then the Midrigals eased on down to LeMars, Iowa and returned with a Class A trophy. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter's evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them, nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.
