The Junior girls, rallying behind their star quarter-back, Mary Spitzner, defeated the spirited Senior girls. Frantic float maldng occupied many after school hours during the week. Tuesday night, the royal party, dressed in formal attire for the coronation. Queen Natalie Winkleman and King Mark Vanderbilt ordered all loyal subjects to attend the game Friday. The parade was dazzling and colorful as usual. The Junior class won first place with its entry in the float competition. The saints were well fixed-up for the big game, proven by their 14 to 12 victory over New Ulm the first homecoming victory since 1966. With only 3 seconds left to go excitement overflowed with the James Gang winning Homecoming for the first time in 7 years. This creative piece of work done by hard working Juniors won first place in the homecoming parade. Seniors Joel Blanchfield and Charlie Osland lead the team onto the field for a well-played second half resulting in a Homecoming victory. The marching band entertained Queen Natalie and her court during half- time. 12 The traditional faculty skit drew its usual laughs with the antics of Suzy Saintette. G for great That's how the critics rated this year's Sr. play, Pillow Talk. The situation comedy presented on a stage, divided into two apartments occupied by Jan Morrow, an interior decorator (Sue Chapman) and a song- writer Brad Allen (Tom Pearson). Most of Jan's problems centered around Allen's monopoly of their shared telephone line, and her attempts to dis- courage the romantic attentions of Allen's thrice married friend and associate, Jonathan Forbes (Joel Blanchfield). Accidentally meeting Brad Allen she was unaware that he was the much dis- like occupant of the adjoining apartment. Brad knew a good thing when he saw it so he tried to cover his true identity by acting like a Texan. Amusing situations arise as he tries to hide his identity. Special thanks to director Don Plumhoff, student director Jo Anderson, stage crew, and cast for a fine play. SENIOR CLASS PLAY CAST ROW 1: J. Brown, J. Anderson, K. Lindquist, S. Chapman, G. FALL PLAY Pillow Talk Is Rated G for Great Jonathans charisma is not turning Jan on, she's turning him out! Jonathan Forbes frantically tried to save Jan Morrow from being kidnapped by Brad Allan though Jan didn't seem to mind. 14 SPIRIT WEEK Spirit Sparks Student Action Perhaps Mother Nature was a bit miffed because the Student Council changed the name of the annual Snow . Week to Spirit Week , for she hit us with a neat little blizzard on the day it began! It all began a few days before when a competition was held for the best decorated hallway. The Sophs, won the competition. Starting Monday all were to wear odd socks, Tuesday it was wierd hats. Wednesday was dress down day, Thursday was dress of the '50s, and Friday was school colors day. Also on Friday a series of hilarious contests were held, (see Pictures.) The focus of Spirit Week was two wrestling matches and a basketball game. The Fairmont basketball game and Hutch wrestling match were won, but the matmen lost a toughie to Mankato, the only loss of the season. Spirit Week, however was a success. A pie in the face is worth two on the floor. ---------John Peifer. Who were the decorators of the door welcoming? Was it celebrants of Snow Week or the snow storm that began the week? 15 Mother Nature cooperated with Snow Week, newly named Spirit Week , by contributing a snow storm on Monday. Nancy Anderson, complete with crash helmet, awaits the starting signal in the tricycle race. It is rather doubtful that Bob Rinne's entry in the plane flying contest would pass a C. A.B. inspection! Under yards and yards of T. P. you will find Pat Warner and Peg Sawatzke, who wound up the most wound up . He couldn't beat Ken Besel, but beautiful Bottem , Dave that is, gave it a good try. 16 Dr, Kirkland tells Junie Moon to face her handicaps - her disabled hand and disfigured face. PROM Memory Moments Bring Pleasure The 1973 Prom on Friday, May 4, started with a banquet for juniors and seniors and faculty only. At 7p. m. a delicious swiss steak dinner was served. As is the custom, the selected sophomores acted as waiters and waitresses. They also presented a number in the program that followed, (see following pictures.) At 8:30 the Grand March was led by junior President, Julie Warnemunde and her escort Wayne Monsen, followed by senior President John Peifer and Kay Moulton. The music of the Jesse Brady Band greatly enjoyed by the dancers, and there were many moments before the Prom ended at 12:00 midnight which became Precious and Few in the memories of the junior and senior class members. 19 RIGHT: As is always the case, the juniors spent a hectic week taking care of all the little details which make a prom worth remembering. BAND Musicians Mark Memorable Year To start the year the band worked on half-time shows for football games. At times it was necessary to practice indoors --weather. Next was the annual Pops concert and exciting basketball games in the spotlight. Who will ever forget the band cheers at the games? A mid-winter concert was given this year for the first time. The Spring concert featured Dave Moulton directing his own composition A New Life Begins for which he received a fine ovation. Music contests took up much of the Spring. District and region winners numbered 21 and 17 respectively. The big event was the tour April 26-28. Concerts were given at Elmore, Minnesota, Jefferson, and the Minimum Security Institution, Fox Lake, in Wisconsin. The band members are very greatful to Mr. Cliff Hjelmer of the junior high and Mr. Glen Linscheid for filling in when 26 Mr. Paulson became seriously ill. MAJORETTES: S. Chapman, M. Krech, J. December, always a busy month, found the Madrigals competing with other similar groups at Gustavus Adolphus College. The week preceeding Christmas vacation three performances were given. The first at the First National Band and broadcast over KNUJ radio. The second, a live T-V performance over KEYC-TV, and that same night the annual Christmas Concert for the public. In January rehearsals began for the Spring Con- cert and contests. May was another busy month. Two perform- ances were given at other schools. At St. Peter a standing ovation was received. The other was at Nicollet. The seasons climax was the annual Spring Con- cert on May seventeenth. Several of Dave Moulton s compositions were presented-another standing ovation! The choir completed its season by singing at Baccalaureate and Commencement. Mr. Jokumsen deserves much credit for creating much pride and enjoyment in the Concert Choir. STAR SOLOISTS: SEATED: S. Nancy Peterson gained the Regional competition with a strong showing. Preparations are already in progress for next year when a declam club will be formed. Various types of dramatics will be experimented with, thus adding more variety and strength to the program. MORE DECLAM: R. Wohlefeil, K. Wolle, V. Stevens, L. Krenz, K. Wiken, M. Blackstad, N. Each year many girls join, bringing happiness and warmth to old folks at Pleasantview and the sick at at the hospital. Small favors make these people happy such as feeding them, reading a letter, or other odd jobs. Other events include the Christmas party where they sing carols and serve supper. Also the annual picnic is popular. Once a month President Kris Bloom- quist brings the members up to dat with all the news, guest speakers, and movies on topics of interest to the group. Published each month, some new features were added. Science news, book reviews, editorials, and teacher features were included. Also effort was made to eliminate gossip and articles of little interest. In order to pay for publication, the staff worked in the concession stands at athletic contests and after school. The toughest part was getting the football field cleaned up on Saturday mornings. People simply didn't want to get up on a day when they could sleep late! PAGE HEADS £ ADVISOR: N. Miller, K. As is usual for all yearbooks, our goals was to capture the memories of the 1972-73 school year. And also as usual, things got pretty hectic at dead-line time, but somehow we managed. The business staff had a banner year in concessions to help us pay for our first color pictures in Saintonian history. The F.H.A. sponsored several fund raising projects which included a bake sale, selling service spoons and tool kits. They also held a dance in February featuring the band Cocoon. Some of the F.H.A. girls served pie and ice cream at the District F.F.A. Greenhand night in December. The F.H.A. also sponsored the annual Mother-Daughter Tea in May and the officers were installed. This year the F.H.A. adopted a wing at the Fairbault State Hospital and they are planning worthwhile projects to do for that wing. The F. H. A. beau this year was Tom Johnson. Sometimes their efforts seem to be taken for granted, but let it be known, girls, that without your faithful work our athletics simply would not be the same. In spite of the let-downs at pep meetings and other times, we all think you do a superb job, and we are just as proud of you as of our teams in combat. The lettermen not only are the combat troops , but have an organization of their own. They raise money at the coat check and candy sales for a special scholarship for one of their own. Roxanne Olson grimaces as a Saintly grappler gets into trouble. B SQUAD CHEERLEADERS: P. Swenstad, M. Viland, K. Lang, L. Underdahl, J. Willock. 48 A SQUAD CHEERLEADERS: ROW 1: S. Chapman, V. Nau, M. The co-captains were Charles Osland, Joel Blanchfield, and Brian Holte. The record of one win and eight losses was very discouraging especially since every game but one was in doubt until the final minutes. However, the one victory was sweet- a Homecoming win against New Ulm. It was the first Homecoming victory since 1965. Again it was decided in the final seconds of the game, 14-12. The very encouraging aspect of the season would have to be the tremendous support of the fans and the undying desire of the players, even in a losing season. Next year the only way to go is U up and both players and fans alike are eagerly awaiting the chance to get revenge. The captains for next year are Brian Holte and Brad Windschill. TOP: Bruce Eklund's proud parents accompany him onto the field on Parent's night. BOTTOM: Action on the front line is shown as the Jimmies put the ball in play. Barker RUNNERS ENJOY SUCCESSFUL YEAR For the second year in a row the Saint Cross-Country Team qualified for the State Meet. If this is a criteria, the season was a success. But success was also achieved during the season, for the runners posted a 9-2 record in dual meets, third in the conference, and second in district and regional com- petition. They were second of 16 teams in the Worthington Turkey Trot. The team's co-captains, Kent Sizer and Mark Runge plus five others placed 15th in the State Meet. Next year is another re-building year with four lettermen returning, three of which ran in the State Meet, so prospects are good for another successful season in the fall of '73. The most valuable of 1972 was Mark Runge. The 1973 co-captains are Mark Runge and Dennis Barker. The strain of cross-country competition is clearly evident on the faces of Rossiter, Barker, and Monsen (TOP) and Runge, D. Barker, and their opponent (BOTTOM). 52 BASKETBALL Another Year of Victories Following the unbelievable team of 1972 that won it all with a perfect record, the team of '73 again had a fantastic sea- son. The 20-3 record was second best in the school's history. Besides a fine starting five, the Saints had a very strong bench, as coach Veglahn could experiment with many com- binations successfully throughout the season. Winning the Hiloday Tourney was the first major accomplishment for the Saints. The Conference title was next, sharing it with Hutchinson at 8-1. From here it was the District Six title for the third year in a row. The season ended with an exciting, well played contest with Windom in the Regional, losing to the team which went to the state in the last few seconds of the game. Mark Vanderbilt was chosen most valuable and he, along with Jerry Dalen were selected on the All-Conference squad. Both will be missed next year, but the Jimmies have five returning lettermen with excellent potential. Considering the winning attitude of the past two years anticipation of another fine season next year is great. Their purpose is to help wherever help is needed during wrestling matches and tournaments. Never let it be said that our matches were not well publicized because the matmaids used many felt pens while making posters urging the matmen to greater heights. In their red and black uniforms, which they made themselves, they are now a part of the wrestling tradition which has been established at our school. How long does it take to coordinate several people's actions so that all are doing the same thing at the same time. Ask any member of the Saintettes and she will tell you that it is many hours. But they enjoy it, and we enjoy the pro- duct of their labor. At a wrestling match Matmaids, Gayleen Niemeier and Kathy Becker assist Mr. Carstenson in passing out programs. n MATMAIDS: C. Ringen, K. The three wrestlers responsible for placing second in the state meet get heroes' welcomes, Joel Blanchfield, Jeff Nelson and Tom Knickrehm. The wrestling Saints won their third State Tourney trophy in five years as they finished second this year. The three senior co-captains came home to a rousing welcome with two seconds and a third. The ’72-'73 team had a 11-1 record, losing to Mankato by one point. They won six trophies and set several school records as Nelson and Blanchfield each won thirty matches with one loss. Dave Ayres was voted the most im- proved wrestler, while Nelson was most valuable. He was also voted the wrestler of the year by radio station KNUJ, New Ulm. The B and C squads coached by Mr. Mohr and Mr. Adams respectively each lost only one match. This year was considered a building year, but there will be eight returning lettermen, so next year should be another very fine year for wrestling. A-SQUAD WRESTLING: ROW 1: R. Hultgren, J. GAA OFFICERS: CLOCKWISE: Miss Haney-advisor, R. Schmidtke-Pres., J. Bergquist-points chairman, N. Schmidt-Vice Pres., S. Chapman-Sec. Fun and Fitness for Girls There are about thirty active mem- bers who participate in GAA. Meetings are held one night a week. The girls have participated in such activities as flag football, volleyball, basketball, bowling, tennis, swimming and badminton. By attending every meeting points are earned and are accumulated toward special awards. It is primarily an or- ganization where girls can get together to have fun and recreation. Now girls can compete with other schools in athletics just as the boys do. In very recent years interest among the girls has been increasing. Now the trophy case is blessed with its first girl's trophy. The girls team was runner-up at the first annual girls' tourney which they sponsored. Volleyball is also becoming very popular among area high schools. GIRLS BASKETBALL: B. Buckingham, C. Bolin, L. Ottum, P. Ness, J. Poulson. ROW 2: J. Ottum, M. Stradtman, C. Pierson, L. Lindquist, L. CATALINA They Use Water to Show Talent Catalina Club is for the girl who likes to swim, and she swims many hours to prepare herself for the Catalina show. Individual responsibility and group re- sponsibility are very important in making the show a success. The going gets rough as the show draws near, but it all turns out to be quite enjoyable and worthwhile as the sea- son comes to an end. About five months of swimming and hard work concludes with a good laugh, head colds, frustration, exhaustion, and of course much self-satisfaction. CATALINA CLUB. ROW 1: W. Barnell, L. Participating in four track meets this Spring, the results were good consider- ing the small number of girls who participated. We like to think of our- selves as power from the few. The team placed third in the District meet at Madelia. Just like the boys, the girls could letter, and seven won that coveted award for the first time in STJHS history. It is difficult to say what the prospects are for next year, but if enthusiasm is any indication they should do very well. Phyllis Curry warms up for her specialties, the 50 and 100 yard dashes. Because the sport is new, no uniforms are seen, but amid the crowd are the running Saintettes. Relay events are a very popular part of girls' track as well as in boys' track. 63 TRACK SQUAD 73 ROW 1: Mr. Renner, L. Toctnem, D. Lorenz, D. Barker, K. Sizer, W. Monsen, D. Schlomann, L. TRACK Scott Curry gets a good handoff to Rich Rossiter in this relay. Hard Work Pays Big Dividends. Although it was predicted by some that St. James would be weak in track, just the opposite proved true due to some very dedicated efforts - like running 17 miles a day in training! Results were excellent with wins in 5 dual meets and championships in the Sentinel Relays, the St. James Olympiad, the sub-region, and the region. Four men went to the State meet: Monsen (440), Nordby (180 low hurdles), Schlomann (mile), and Barker (2 mile). Under the leadership of Captains Wayne Monsen and Kent Sizer, several school records were broken including the mile and 2 mile relays, the 2 mile run, and the low hurdles. Next year could be another good year under the leadership of Captains Denny Barker and Mark Runge. Congratulations to Mr. Hansen, the coaching staff and team for your superb effort. 64 TOP: Cabot Welchlin strains every muscle as he reaches the finish line in the 880 yard run. The Saint baseball team, like the track team, surprised many people by winning the South Central Conference championship with a perfect 7-0 record. Not expected to do much this year, the team came through with some fine pitching and timely hitting to emerge from the season with a respectable 11-4 record. Things looked great for the Saintly hitters as they entered the District finals against a good Mankato Scarlet team. But it ended abruptly as they were shut out 4-0. Included in the season were some sparkling pitching, and some extra inning games when winning meant the conference championship. Jerry Dalen and Brian Holte were co- captains, they also were team batting leaders. The pitching duties were very ably handled by Steve Shellum, Tom Johnson, and Mike Robbins. With a veteran squad returning next year, things look good for a repeat of this year's success. Tom Johnson is about to let fly with his fast ball down the middle. B SQUAD BASEBALL: KNEELING are N. Winkleman, A. Vogt, B. Lunz, S. Schiller, K. Besel, and L. Kubly. STANDING are coach Johnson, M. Nordby, P. Krech, A. Bolland, G. Zender, B. Hill, and M. Hatting. 67 GOLF SQUAD: ROW 1: M. Swenson, R. TOP, BOTTOM: Scott Biggar and Ken Sands square off for a little practice, with Ken seeming to have a position advantage in both pictures. As a matter of fact Scott may get the ball literally rammed down his throat! TENNIS-GOLF Acers Achieve Good Results The tennis and golf teams had a fairly even split for their season's work. Under their new coach, John Arneson, the tennis squad won five and lost six meets during the season, tying for fourth in conference standings. Things look good for next year with five out of seven lettermen returning, as well as some good prospects coming up from the junior high. The golf squad had a thirteen-eleven record in meets this Spring. They placed third in the conference, four strokes out of first place. They were second in the District Tourney with Jerry Dalen winning third place medal in Region play. He will go on to the State meet. TENNIS SQUAD: SEATED: R. Rosik. ROW 1: B. Robbins, N. Even times we missed the bus; Parties, dances, homecomings too. Assignments just” two weeks overdue; Games and tournaments played to win. Cheering as the James Gang walked in; Thanks to the many teachers who gave us the knowledge to make it through; We leave you now with hopes of when in the future, we meet again.
