BASEBALL Gang Captures District Title The James Gang struck again. This time headed by familiar names such as Nessler, Dalen, Ness, and Chalin, they struck Mankato and took the district baseball title, 5-4 in 13 innings. Reports come in that due to inclement weather they had been held up when several early games were cancelled. It was a slow start with a fair 4-3 con- ference record, and 10-4 over all. But with Jay Ness and Steve Shellum pitching for Earned Run Average of 2. 00 and 0. 86 respectively, and Jerry Dalen batting . 480 things started falling into place. As in Basketball Jeff Nessler and Jim Chalin provided excellent leadership as Co-captains. When last seen they were headed for Regional play. Consult the next edition of the Saintonian for the results! Coach Johnson seems to be plotting some strategy in attempting to win one of several close ball games in which the Saints were involved this spring. 26

TRACK Trackmen Reach New Heights Following a slow start the track team managed a fairly successful year. The highlight of the Saint track season was winning the St. James Olympia over six opponents, with Fairmont providing the toughest competition. Vance and Mike Watkins, co-captains for the 1972 season, proved to be the most valuable members. Both boys pro- duced a steady flow at team points through- out the season. Finishing 5th as a team in conference action, the mile relay quartet of Wayne Monsen, Mark Runge, Vance Watkins, and Mike Watkins tied the previous con- ference record and took first place. They also won the district mile relay and ad- vanced to the region. Vance Watkins set a new record in the discus while Kent Sizer broke his former record in the 2 mile. The fact that only 3 seniors, Barry Warner, Vance Watkins and Mike Watkins were on the 1972 team brightened the possibility of a strong team next year. Mike Watkins strains every muscle for that last extra inch in the long jump. TRACK: Row 1: M. Watkins, V. Watkins. Row 2: K. Welchlin, B. Wright, D. Lorenz, T. Watkins, B. Warner, C. Osland, P. Barker, M. Sanchez, D. Barker, Ass't. Coach Paul Krueger, Coach Norb Renner. Row 3: Ass't. Coach Bill Mohr, D. Schlomann, C. Welchlin, M. Runge, R. Schroeder, W. Monsen, B. Windschill, S. Curry, J. Blanchfigld, R. Nordby
