During two games especially they showed that the squad of '47 was one of which the school and community could really be proud. Which games? First there was the heart- breaker with Fairmont. Thatwasthe game In whlchwewere sure Wally Holm had scored but the ref's said otherwise. To quote a reporter of the school paper: It must have been fate, for It certainly wasn't the Jimmy eleven that allowed Fairmont their narrow 7-6 decision. The second game was the squad's supreme effort and near win over the mighty conference champions, Waseca. Hearts of many of the Jimmy fans skipped beats that October night when the Red and Blacks ran, passed, blocked, and tackled their way to a near upset in Waseca's string of 15 victories. The score ended 14-13. The rest of the season was sad with the exception of two happy notes—our victory over Wlndom at homecoming, and St. Peter's defeat at the hands of the Jimmies. Opp. St.J. SEASON'S REVIEW Ab Strommen 8 cagers, despite hie wary outlook at the beginning of the season, came tnrough to a tally of 12 wins and 9 loses, an average of .571. With only two returning reguiar s, Barge and Flogstad, and Osland who came up off the Injured 118t, tno squad turned In a good record. -|}e , alnts were headed In the right direction when they met and beat 31eepy Eye 38-29. A strong Bee Squad came through for their first win against 31eepy Eye also. The succeeding four tilts came our way, the boys winning over Truman, Wlndom, New Ulm, and Madella. All four of these games had scores reading In the forties—with the Saints well In the lead. Robblnsdale turned out to be the better when the Saints played them on the U. of M. fleldhouse floor, with a score of 41-31. Two more victories were added when St. James defeated Wells and Lake Crystal to take the ohamplonshlp at the Lake Crystal Invitational Tourney. These victo- ries brought us our season's only trophy. Fairmont proved tough with a score of 31-35 after the season's only overtime. The next tilt with Blue Earth was our first conference loss. Waseca and Mt. Lake, state tourney teams, counted for the next two Jimmy losses. Then In a comebaok on the part of the Saints, both Wlndom and New Ulm went down to defeat, for the second time. Winning by one point, St. Peter produced a third place tie between the two Saint teams for conference standings. Fairmont broke this tie by tipping the Local Saints. Ending the season the Saints won over Truman and lost again to Mt. Lake. In the District tournament St. James dropped the Semi-final to Minnesota Lake and took the consolation tilt by winning over Rapldan. Let's not forget that Chuck Osland set a new St. James High scoring record this season and was second only to Krause of Waseca in the conference. The hardwood tale for this year makes It look as though St. James were on the way up In the cage circles. Both the instrumental and the vocal groups have done exceptionally well in their many appearances. Under the direction of Mr. Frank Kolar, the band performed at the football games, basketball games, and the district tournament. The pep band is to be commended for the fine work they did toward bolstering up school spirit. Their participation in all pep fests helped the cheerleaders in getting a big response from the student body. The vocal groups, under the direction of Miss Lois Johnson, presented several programs this year. They sang at the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs, and at the Commencement and Baccalaureate exercises in the spring. Together with the band, the chorus and glee clubs presented their annual winter concert. These groups also participated in the music festival which was held at St. James, April 23. Probably the most widely publicized of our musical groups is the girls' sex- tette. This group appeared on Cedric Adams' Stairway to Stardom . They also entertained at many school programs, as well as assisting at community functions.
