The Centennial Anniversary of the Sisters of Charity 1999 Holy Family Chapel and Ad- ministration Building, Con- Two Sisters take time k Ñ n vent Station, New Jersey. out from a busy day for f à | a moment of prayer at the shrine to Our Lady of Fatima, Convent Sta- tion. 1 + NT ad PR 4 А Sister of Charity poses with her young pupils in the Virgin Islands. A familiar picture, a Sister of Charity in one of the many schools staffed by her order. Exactly 100 years ago, in 1859, Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan, at the reguest of the Most Reverend James Roosevelt Bayley, founded the Sisters of Charity. Through these many years the Sisters have engaged in various types of charitable work, and today they are a true symbol of love, charity, and the Christian way of life. They serve in hospitals, orphanages, homes for the aged, homes for incurably ill patients, homes for working girls, grammar and high schools, The College of Saint Elizabeth, and four overseas missions for which only volunteers are габа ted. The Sisters of Charity prepare their students carefully for life by giving them high ideals and encouraging them to make the most ‘of each opportunity for success. In their training they inculcate knowledge of both God and the world which He created. Those pupils who do not grasp the work as quickly as the others receive special attention from Sister who is always ready to help, to encourage, and to console. The Community has members serving in New Jersey, New York, Connecti- cut, Massachusetts, Florida, the Virgin Islands, and in Puerto Rico. The foreign missions included, until recently, China. Today, the Sisters of Charity continue to serve God and man. They ask few favors yet bestow them constantly and abundantly to all those in need. Truly, the Sisters of Charity have lived up to their name and have become an organization in which God and His teachings exist fully and endlessly. DEUS ET CARITAS

DEDICATION With esteem, we of the Class of “59” admiration and overwhelming make this humble highest dedication to an everlasting symbol of charity, goodness, and righteousness, Sister Anne Magda- lene. Her superiority and unsurpassed ability in teach- ing us through these unforgettable and most pre- cious years will leave a permanent mark upon both our hearts and our characters. Her help was gladly given, her advice was wisely given, and she was to us a gift, God given. She was a Sister to all of us in the true meaning of the word. As long as we of the Class of 59 shall live upon this earth, we will always carry her imprint, her memory, and the principles which she set forth in her teaching. We are her products, and we are following in her footsteps; no greater honor could be bestowed upon us. She dedicated herself to us, and we, with tears in our eyes and sorrow in our hearts, say good-bye, and with gratitude and love, we the Class of “59 dedicate this yearbook to our Senior Moderator. Sister Anne Magdalene.
