EILEEN WADDELL A sense of humor is the salt of the earth. Hass History A class of forty-nine apprehensive freshmen, we entered Saint James in September of 1964. Somehow, with the help of Sister Josephine, who did her best to see that justice was done to her young fountains of entertainment, we managed to survive the last real initiation. That year of bible vigils, talent shows, and Algebra I brought joy to her heart and cries of help to our lips. Nevertheless, forty-five of us returned the next year for more battles with the Coke machine and to face the new experience of Biology. Sister Mary St. Therese and her Japanese bows, however, helped us to overcome that difficulty. With Sister Catherine Mariam helping us to become ladies we faced the second new experience of our first semi-formal. Before we knew it, still recovering from Biology and Geometry, we found ourselves in the hands of Sister Ann Al- berta, the only nun who was there both before and after we hit her class. Al- though we were split up into separate courses, our spirit remained the same. ln fact, it was the first year that we won the spirit cup. Perhaps the reason for our sudden success was the ice cold stares we'd get from sister's baby blues every time we'd fool around. Religion class was always exciting because there was bound to be heated discussions on some current event. We ended the year with class day, an experience which was rewarding to us, as well as the seniors, Then we were there. We had made it to the senior classroom. With Sister Estella St. John, many changes came to us that year. At our retreat at Loretto, with the help of Father Cartey and Mr. Roide, we really got to know ourselves and each other a little better. After Christmas, disappointment at rejection and shouts of joy at acceptance into college became part of our lives. All dis- appointment vanished, however, at the excitement of our first formal dinner dance. Soon we were looking forward to our Washington trip and, for many of us, our first airplane ride. The end was drawing nearer, as many of us real- ized, recalling many memories at our class day. Then, June 2, 1968, as we left Saint James behind, we realized that it really wasn't the end but rather the beginning ofa bright new future.
