'ff embers Olenik, Essl, Agent, Gresh and Gruggeman ann ce our theme- At Valley Forge and at Columbia University, among other places, time capsules filled with doc- uments, have been buried in the earth, to be examined in future ages as a testimony of our days after the passage of time. This book is the St. James time capsule, filled with memories of the first ten years at St. James. The capsules of others have found a rock bed, deep in the earth. Ours is meant to be buried in every St. James man's heart. TABLE OF CONTENTS PART I-SPIRITUAL . . T . , . Saint James Boys Who Died in the Service of Our Country JOHN JUDEFINE FRANCIS PRONESTI THOMAS DEITMAN JAMES DENNEHEY GEORGE GREENHALGH JOSEPH COHM JOSEPH JACONO TO A FALLEN HERO Sweet brother, if l do not sleep My eyes are flowers for your tomb, And if I cannot eat my bread, My fasts shall live like willows where you died. it in the heat I find no water for my thirst, My thirst shall turn to springs for you, poor traveller. Where, in what desolate and smokey country, Lies your poor body, lost and dead? And in what landscape of disaster Has your unhappy spirit lost its road? Come, in my labor find a resting place And in my sorrows lay your head, Or rather take my lite and blood And buy yourself a better bed M Or take my breath and take my death And buy yourself a better rest. When all the men of war are shot And flags have fallen into dust, Your cross and mine shall tell men still Christ died on each, for both of us, For in the wreckage of your April Christ lies slain, And Christ weeps in the ruins of my spring, The money of Whose tears shall fall Into your weak and friendless hand, And buy you back to your own land: The silence of Whose tears shall fall Like bells upon your alien tomb. Hear them and come: they call you home. - Thomas Merton .Z EE-, ? 5 5 v 3 E 5 4 if Mak . di 'QQ if 5' 3 ww? There Was a Lady in His Life- The valedictorian ended his address. Ap- plause was deafening. He had stirred hearts, for his was an impulse for perfec- tion. The exercises over, countless friends were on hand to cheer. He was a leader- outstanding in his school, athletically and socially. His mother was not there, she had died some years before. His father sat sob- bing, apart from the crowd. It was strange that he should cry, but he had received both a blow and a thrill! He, of all that happy throng, knew what was in the young man's heart-the resolve to leave within days to begin a religious vocation dedicated to the Mother of God. For this was the patron of the modern student. This was Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin! Graduates going to St. Robert's Church for Baccalaureate Mass. RETREAT MASTERS 1942 REV. FRANCIS J. RETREAT MASTERS There ls a Lady in Our 'Life'- All home-room pictures in this book have included the Lady in every Saint James' man's life. Like Saint Gabriel we have found Mary, ever driving us on, ever mak- ing us over, ever urging us to the ideals of her Divine Son. Like Saint Gabriel we have a vocation, now a temporary one-to be a student atter the ideals of Christ. lt involves a lot of little things-being on time a hun- dred times a day, hitting the books when Milton is on, resisting a chance to copy from the fellow at our side. But always, her influence is there. You enter the door at Saint James and her gracious smile greets you. No statement of Saint James spiritual life is complete without including the strongest force, the Lady in every Saint James man's life 1946 RT. REV. MSGR. JOHN J. McKENNA J943 REV. JOSEPH M. With the completion of his third year as music director at the school, Mr. Piscotty has seen his tireless efforts rewarded in the progress ot his students, many ot whom came to St. James with no musical experience. Father Donadieu, moderator of the band since its infancy, has combined his eftorts with those of Mr. Piscotty to produce the fine group of melody-makers who entertain us at games and other events. THE SAINT JAMES FOOTBALL STORY Few schools can turn the searchlight of history upon their gridiron record and find so gratifying a retrospect as ours. lt has been a saga of David with an automatic slingshot, a record of surprises and upsets, one not indeed without its heartaches, but one that presents in the over-all view the impression of a successful campaign waged, a mission accom- plished, a series of positions fought for and won. The boys who met coach Frank Brennan from PMC and Abe' Soifer from Temple in the first Saint James football practice on the lot on 23rd Street. August 26, T940 had only two weeks of practice with equipment to prepare for their first game. Their fighting spirit made them worthy of the place they were to hold in Saint James annals, for in the third game of their career they were up in Philadelphia, defying Roman Catholic, the class of the Catholic League and played the doughty purple and gold to a 6-6 tie. ln fact Saint James scored first that day, and the extra-point hit the cross-bar and dropped under. Had it gone over, it would have won the game. Since that first afternoon on the lot on 23rd Street, when today's reality of football achievement seemed an impossible dream, some eight hundred boys have been trained in the lists. Among the great names are those of Lou Ferry, outstanding at Villanova and now a member of the Green Bay Packers, Cass Halloway, who won a football scholarship to Villanova and who later assisted in the coaching at Saint James, Johnny Judefind, Chick Epright, Joe Greenhalgh, Joe Ward, Walt Udovich, It seems Franny Desmond, and a host of others. almost a corollary to the courage of these men that the cause of humanity in the war which came so suddenly into their lives would find them eager to offer themselves. And too, it was inevitable that of such a gallant group some would have to pay the em4!wawmau!AanAaoJu total price in the scrimmage for which they had so unwittingly prepared. Johnny Judefind and Joe Greenhalgh died in action. Saint James was never prouder of any score than of their triumphant touch- down in the end-zone of eternity! Saint James football has presented a distinctive aerial attack and an enviable defensive record. Sei-- dom have Saint James teams lost by great scores. The style of play has been dictated by the superior resources in manpower enioyed by the opposition. A Saint James player often has to play four different men before the afternoon is over. The odds are against a power-game. It must be one of decep- tion, a wide open aerial 'game, with ballhandling winning over force. Conditioning has been primary. No Saint James team has failed to show outstanding conditioning for play. In the third season of their history the Saint James football team achieved its manly stature with a record of six victories, three defeats, and one tie. Walt Udovich and Chick Epright were named All- Delco that year. 1949 FOOTBALL TEAM lst Row: L. Pierce C3455 M. Seigch C5855 T. Fannon C3255 D. Shea C3755 H. Sweeney C5655 J. Donnelly C3955 F. Coach Brennan and his assistant, Vince Desmond, one of Saint James' best friends, had a lot to chuckle about. The '46, '47, and '48 seasons saw Saint James a respectable position, never dipping maintaining under the .500 mark. Vince Desmond had to step out under came Dim molded a pressure of business, and in his place Montero from La Salle College. In the 1949 season Coach Bean , assisted by Joe Logue, of Saint Robert's and PMC, came through with another great team. Again third place in the league was claimed by the Jimmies, who lost only the last two games. Never to be forgotten was the rout of mighty West Catholic with Fannon filling the air with touch- down passes, Pierce pulling them down, and Shea, Sweeney, and Galvin going about making them- selves unlovely in their own inimitable way. Father Knebels, Athletic Director, and Father Hughes, football moderator, had not spent their time in vain. The sagacity and patience of Bean , the dean of Saint James football had borne abund- ant fruit. JAMES A FOOTBALL POWER RIDLEY TOWNSHIP: 10-OJ Opening their season against a strong Ridley team, the Jimmies were deprived of a victory when an ofTsides penalty nullified a safety. The scoreless tie with the champions of Delaware County inspired a healthy respect from all sides for the strength of the St. James eleven. Rusty Shea shone on defense for the Bulldogs. ST. JOSEPH'S L13-71 The Jimmies staged a last ditch rally to overcome a 7-0 deficit and make the Catholic League opener successful. Tommy Fannon's slingshot pass to Carm Donato, and Bill Wiley's recovery of a loose bull in the end zone tied the noose that hanged the preppers. ST. JOHN'S C33-71 So Score Again You Fighting Bulldogs. With this song as their incentive the Jimmies really went to down and downed a stubborn St. John's club 33-7. Big man for the day was Larry Pierce. He recovered two blocked kicks for touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and booted three extra points. All in all, twenty-one paints. The others scorers were Tom Fannon and Carm Donato. Carm brolre open for a brilliant 74 yard iaunt for his six pointer. Again as in every game the doughty St. James forward wall was impregnable. WEST being pushed around by the Burrs since our rivalry began we turned the tables. The score, 32-13. The names of CATHOLIC 132-131 History in the making! Yes, after finally Fanncn and Pierce crashed into every headline and passed from every lip. Fannon connected with ten of his passes and Pierce gathered them in for a total of 157 yards. Outstanding too, was the ferocious Bulldog line that wouldn't be beaten. ROMAN CATHOLIC C13-91 The Bulldogs stalled themselves to an early 13-0 lead, then fought of1 o desperate Roman rally to notch their 4th consecutive victory. Carzo and Donato crossed info pay dirt to provide the winning margin. The forward wall struck with the ferocity of lions as they trampled the Cahillites 13-9. The Bulldogs pushed the Explorers from one ten yard stripe to the other without scoring. Herm Sweeney's out- standing line play earned for him the distinction of Lineman of the Week. ST. THOMAS MORE U3-77 Five in a Row! That's the way the standings read after the Jimmies squeezed by the Golden Bears of St. Thomas More 13-7. Both Jimmie scores came as a result of Tom Fannon. He found Dick Mahoney for the first touchdown and Larry Pierce was his man for the second one. Sun Oil field was washed with unrelenting rains but the sun kept shining in St. James hearts. SOUTH CATHOLIC 16-191 The spell was broken. St. James felt the lash of defeat from the strong football machine of South Catholic. The Jimmies fought in desperation but they fell prey to the South Philly boys 19-6. Ray Carzo's work on offense and defense lifted slightly the curtain of defeat. NORTH CATHOLIC LO-33? On Television for the first time! A great dayg Lloyd Field was packed. And when the contest was over the North Catholic Falcons were the newly crowned champions. A-2' 1959 SAINT JAMES BASEBALL TEAM ll I1 AT SAINT JAMES The story of baseball at Saint James is a tale of courage rewarded. It was the baseball team that first brought Saint James a championship in a maior sport. In the spring of l946, Saint James fielded its first baseball team. Mr. John Gillespie was the coach and Rev. John Dunion was the moderator. We fin- ished third in the always tough Catholic League- not a bad start for any team. The next season saw a building-up process, and it was not in vain. In 1948 under our new coach, Sergeant Edward Reds Mc- Guire of the Chester Police Force, the team brought us the Catholic League championship. The team combined powerful hitting, good fielding and strong pitching to gain the right to meet the Philadelphia Public League champion, South Phila. High School, at Shibe Park for the city championship. Though we lost the game, we proved that we had a right to be in it. It was a pitchers' duel all the way with Andy Jarusinski, the Saint James hurler, being bet- tered by the ace hurler for South. The final score was 4-O. In T949 only one game separated the McGuiremen from the second pennant in two years. Capturing the Philadelphia District High School Class A championship, the bowlers achieved the sum- mit of a very respectable history. Saint James first started to bowl in the Catholic League in the season of 1946-47 under the direction of Fr. George Friel and Fr. Vincent Schneider. The record of the first year was inauspicious, but those struggling steps were to lead to later success. In the 1947-48 season St. James was one of the king- pins of the league with a record of thirty-six wins and twelve losses. The Friel-Schneidermen ended the regular season in a tie for Hrst place with West Cath- olic but lost in a playoft match. The 1948-49 season saw a record of nineteen wins and twenty-nine losses. me Cfmmpg D Mulrme, E. Carducci, R. Scully, T. Ryan, A.
