If you must-but never quit. Life is queer, with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won if he'd stuck it out. Stick to your task, though the pace seems slow, You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering man. Often the snuggle: has given up When he might have captured the victor's cup, And he learned too, when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown. So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit- It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit! A Friuczpals Message I appreciate this opportunity to say a few words to the faculty and student body of the St. Jacob School. I have had the privilege to be associated with many of you for the past five years in one rela- tionship or another. Whatever that relationship has been, I hope that I am considered, above all else - a friend. The Annual Staff and sponsors deserve congratulations and thanks for the production of this fine record of school events in 1957-58. I wish to thank the faculty for their splendid cooperation during the school year. To the underclassmen, I would extend the admonition that continued coopera- tion, diligence and persistence will be necessary to carry their school career hereto its successful conclusion. To the graduating seniors, I would extend hearty congratulations and best wishes for ever-increasing success in whatever pursuits they may follow in the future. I would remind them, however, that they are only beginning to face those decisions which will be of such vital importance throughout the coming years - may these decisions be wise ones, and may they lead to prosperous and happy lives. We purchased all items necessary to conduct the meetings with our chapter funds. We were able to obtain these funds through the sales of Christmas cards, screwdrivers, hog troughs, and calendar ads. On October 15, five freshman boys became Greenhands and on November 27 be- came Chapter Farmers. On February 10, we were host to the Troy chapter in a joint party. A pest contest was held during the winter months and a party was given to the win- ning team by the losing team. Ice cream and cake was enjoyed by all attending. In the spring, we secured multi-flora rose and pine trees for members and farmers in this area. On May 7, 1958, the annual Parent-Son Banquet was held in the school cafeteria and gym. The boys' mothers and several high school girls cooked and served the meal, The awards for the year's accomplishments were made. Snaps of the banquet and pro- gram are on the next page. With six returning lettermen and high hopes for a good season, the Lions started heavy drills in mid-October. Again hampered by lack of height and weight, the fire- wagon style was employed in hopes of substituting speed for size. The season opened with an easy 63-50 victory over Witt, but in the second game a plague of injuries began. Added to the measles and other sickness the old injury jinx held the Lions to a poor four and seven record at Christmas time. With the return of Tom Ahlmeyer in January the team almost hit full strength and won six of eight, the only black marks being back-to-back losses to a very strong Columbia team. During this time the squad brought home the first place consolation trophy from the New Baden Invitation Tourney, and with it a new school scoring record with a 104-86 victory over Patoka. Injuries and sickness again interfered and the Lions did not regain their stride until about District Tourney time as they rang down the curtain on the regular season with a 96-52 victory over Witt. In the District Tourney a weak Marquette team put on an amazing shooting exhibi- tion in the second half to give the Lions a scare after a near rout the first half. St. Jacob hung on for an 87 -'79 victory and the right to face Troy in the second round. Against Troy the jittery Lions shot their second lowest field percentage in two years and dropped a 65-'76 decision after leading through the early part of the game. Wayne Frutiger established new records in single game scoring, 42, season scoring, 543, and field goals, 226. Mike McKinney set new marks in free throw percentage with 814 and assists with 196. Henry Robards tied the defensive rebounding record with 200 and received the Most Valuable Player Award for consistent play.
