The GNAT IAN of 1948 Published by the Senior CU St. Ignatius High School CLEVELAND. OHIO I-leavmg Ignatius means much more to us than the end of four years of hard work mixed with pleasure At this time we realize we are just beginning the lives that lie ahead of us. The one purpose of our lives on this earth, to attain eternal happiness, we will never reach alone Therefore we owe a great deal to all those who have helped us in the last four years the priests and scholastics, the lay teachers, and our own mothers and fathers. Without their guidance and continual prayers where would we be right now? So as we publish this yearbook, the only written record of our high school years, we readily remember those who have inspired and directed us Peter B Brady Thomas M. Spittler, Editor Richard O. Gaeckle, Bushiest Mgr. Mr. Frank J. Bitzan DEDICATION FOR twenty-five years now Mr. Frank J. Bitzan has been a member of a self-sacrificing group of laymen who devote their lives to the enlightenment and guidance of Catholic young men. For this we honor and respect him. Although we seniors have benefited from only four of those twenty-five years, we feel deeply grateful to Mr. Bitzan, not only for what he, as teacher and friend, has done for us personally, but for what he has contributed to the grand spiritual and educational traditions of St. Ignatius High School. And so, as a token of our gratitude, we, the Senior Class, dedicate the 1948 IGNATIAN to Mr. Frank J. Bitzan. VERY REVEREND DANIEL B. CRONIN, SJ. PRESIDENT PRINCIPAI REV. S. J. BUCKMAN, S.J. A Few Answers Concerning A COLLEGE EDUCATION Shall I Go to College? If you rank in the upper third or middle third of your class: are able to study and enjoy it; have financial backing to enable you to devote ten hours a day to classroom, laboratory, and study. I Which College? A CATHOLIC COLLEGE of recognized standing, with emphasis on academic endeavor supplemented by sufficient extra-curricular activities — academically, physically, and socially, which will prepare you for your life's work. Why a Catholic College? The false ideologies so prevalent throughout the world in the fields of business, government, social service, and the professions can only be combatted through men and women trained in the true Christian principles. “Education consists essentially in preparing man for what he must do here below in order to attain the sublime end for which he was created. (I’ius XI. Encyclical on Christian Education). What Type? The liberal arts college is the best type for prospective college students. 11•« program of courses is ideal for those intending to enter the business, government, teaching, social service, and like fields. For those who want to go on through a professional school in law, medicine, and engineering, they will find that the liberal arts college leads naturally into these schools, which require pre-professional studies as given by this type of college. Too. the liberal arts college endeavors to give the student a well-rounded and well-accented education in all the major fields of human interest which will stand the student in good stead in his life in general.
