During the four years one spends here, he or she is taught the importance of helping and living in solidarity with others. Our Religious curriculum opens new opportunities to learn about Scripture, faith, ethics and morality. During student-led retreats, students discover their spirituality and learn more about themselves and others. Out- side of the classroom, SI provides numerous ways to experience service and work in soli- darity with others: ranging from Thursday morn- ing Comfort Runs to two-week Immersion trips. Community service is an important compo- nent of Si's commitment to helping others. As students, it is essential to understand our abil- ity to help and guide individuals as provide hope and compassion for others. The connec- tion that students experience at his or her site is an unparalleled one that changes the way they look at the world. Through the many op- portunities SI students have to become men and women with and for others, each Ig- natian develops a new appreciation to find ways to help others in need to truly change the world. Kaitlin Holl '08 OHUCl£ ie THE THREE TRAITS THAT DEFINE AN IGNATIAN Competence. Conscience. Compassion. To the students and faculty of St. Ignatius, these words not only describe esteemed virtues, but are the qualities that comprise an Ignatian. Throughout our four years at $1, we develop an awareness of the men and women we strive to become. We build competence whether in the classroom, on stage and on the athletic field. We build con- science as we study morality and ethics and apply these values to our daily lives. We build compassion every time we are selfless and act as men and women with and for others. From community building to serving others, Ignatians never stop advocating for a better tomorrow. We learn to evaluate how our ac- tions, whether big or small, affect others and the world around us. With our time at SI, we travel a long way to truly become fully alive, where we release all pretenses and act justly. Ultimately, with faith, we become competent, conscientious, and compassionate individuals whose actions serve for the greater glory of God. Melanie Mistica '08 ' ('fctio- ((. ()nt I. We'll fight for you, oh Red and Blue; These are the words to the SI fight song, written by Fenton O'Toole, class of '34. Many times in a wildcat's career, these legendary words are repeated to cheer on their teams and inspire them to bring home another win. These words aren't just words to yell out, but a mantra to live by. They motivate SI students not only to represent their school, but also to perform their best on the field, on the stage, and in the classroom. These words create a sense of unity and define our school's diverse spirit in any crowd. These words are used both as a pump up and a promise that one will try their hardest in any activity at SI. It is these words that a wildcat is identified by throughout the rest of their lives. These words that wildcats live by. Go wildcats! Nick Rose '08 ( hc ioij 7 Student Life ivtei () (' Spirit SI 44 -SH 14 We are...SI! Indeed, we are SI when the entire facutly and student body unite to celebrate the Bruce Mahoney. The Bruce Mahoney, a tradition commemo- rating Bill Bruce, Jerry Mahoney, and other graduates of SI and SHCP that perished in WWII, marks an exciting occasion in our scholastic year. With the culmination of spirit week, the SI Wildcats convene in the grand Kezar Stadium to support the Varsity Football Team as they play against the SHCP Irish. An enthusiastic horde of red and blue fills the bleachers, and hopeful spirits roam the air. The Red and Blue Crew leads the cheers. Dance and Drill entertains during halftime, and the Football Cats play as if there is no to- morrow. This year, after four thrilling quarters, SI beat SH with a score of 44 to 14. Every year, students and faculty alike not only look forward to the day of the game itself, but to the entire week that precedes it: spirit week! This week gives everyone a chance to break the dress code and get a little goofyor even nerdy! This year, the week started with nerd day, as students were encouraged to unleash the star trek fan within or show off their favorite suspenders. Tuesday brought out everyone's inner wildcat with jungle day as people donned camouflage or animal prints. Wednesday, everyone expressed their grammar school pride with uniforms and school colors from their pre-SI days. Then SI got ready for the storm that would take out SH on the football field by dressing the part on Thursday's weather disaster day. Friday topped it off as the halls of SI became a sea of red and blue from face paint to this year's special edition Bruce Mahoney t-shirts featur- ing Brother Draper. Spirit week unites the school as we come to- gether to celebrate that WE ARE SI. It builds excitement as game day comes closer and closer until the excitement's release during the pre-game rally. The loneliness and isolation was chilling. I cannot grasp how residents will move back- how they will be willing. God, help me. I'm turning to You now, the way I have seen the people of New Orleans do. You can be a source of strength for them; I need You to be mine, too. In the way these people are rooted in faith- I deeply wont to relate. You are their basic living. In their Church services for healing, their con- stant giving; In the deep breaths they take upon re-en- tering water-damaged homes, In the voice one volun- teer heard, calling him back toward the Super Dome. 20 to understand injustice, how we can start making things right. It calls us to recognize how some only stayed behind When no other refuge was there for them to find; and the injustice of leav- ing miles upon miles of coastline destroyed, and millions of rotted homes abandoned, void. We reflect, we pray, we breothe. We gather up memories, friendships, and faith before we leave. And together, our spiritual- ity mounts to one thing: An intense longing, for things to be better than they seem: For a hope that withstands flood, injustice, and despair- One that remains always to relieve, renew, and repair. -Jessica Harders '08 I turn, too, to my group's nightly reflections and proyers That help me make sense of the things I see and ex- perience, the hope and despair; That help me find mean- ing through insight and understanding- So that I can see where before my sight was lacking. With openness and a little faith, my group realizes how smiles can conceal tears; how living paycheck-to- paycheck causes fear; how being in an ER room all day may result in helplessness; and how being outside of our comfort zones, at times, is progress. For two weeks, eight of us worked with the homeless of Sacramento. One of the most memorable ex- periences from the trip undoubtedly stems from our first few days after our arrival. Although we had known before- hand that an impor- tant part of our trip would be an imitation of homelessness, we were still very surprised when we arrived in Sacramento, and were stripped of all our pos- sessions, save the clothes on our backs, and informed that we were now Homeless, and would need to find both food to eat and a place to sleep. For several days, we lived in solidarity with those we came to serve. We waited through fiery ser- mons at a local church to receive a meager meal, experienced verbal humiliation due to our unpleasant sight and smell, and spent hour after hour around, speculating about our next meal. Experiencing homeless- ness in Sacramento, albeit for a short while, was a time that none of us will soon forget. Sacra 1. Cojsondfo Gallcgher 2. Zo« Molke. Hcnnoh lynch. Max Sanden 3. We were camp leaders for the children of migrant work- ers and immigrants, and found out what it really is to love. Who is special? I AM SPECIAL! Who does God love? ME! Who do I love? ME! Who else do you love? YOU! We came back from the campsite feeling exhausted, but more alive than we'd ever felt, and ready to take it all on. For two weeks we ran a camp for the kids of San Bias, Costa Rica, setting up activities and fun events during their winter break off from school. In the afternoons, we helped the community by painting the bull ring, which they use for many of the town's celebrations, and by building kneelers in the church for the com- fort of the older members of the community. We met so many gener- ous people who were willing to share their lives with us: their food and homes, birthday celebra- tions, and family outings. Although most of us went on this immersion expect- ing to give more than re- ceive, towards the end we realized that they were really the ones who had changed us and given us so much more than we had given them. We developed strong relation- ships with members of the community and with each other. I love you Costa Rica 07'! Special thanks Allison, Ms. Jones, and Mr. Cafasso. •lorena Camanera '08 Cchs£ t 1. Jock Maxwell, Joey Murphy Allhough a 4:30am wake up call was not alwoys welcome the first week, shoring stories over our homemade breakfast with the immigrant workers of Boyle Heights made it all worthwhile. The members of East LA Immersion '07 became a part of the Boyle Heights community and we were embraced in solidarity. Wo spent our mornings and afternoons working in the class- rooms of Dolores Mission School, and the bonds we created with our students were something I know we have not forgotten. From tutoring young students in math to playing dodge ball ot recess (and losing to the 3rd graders...) we focused on working with the community rather than serving it. During our work at Dolores Mission, we went to lively masses and learned about the condition of East LA from the people who live there. Our second week, we moved to the Catholic Worker house where we focused on justice as it relates to poverty and hun- ger. Working in the Hippie Kitchen among people who dedicate their lives to serving over 1000 meals a day to the homeless and hungry inspired us during the long days of buttering bread and washing dishes. Nightly reflections allowed us to incorporate the essential spiritual aspect of immersion into our ex- periences, and our group bond strengthened on a deeper level. These we learned during these two weeks of nonstop service, learning, and fun in East LA transcend our day-to doy experiences here at SI. 26 oway, it's not the travel distance that matters at all with Saint Ignatius' Immersion program, but rather the dimension and definition added to a life in progress. It's liv- ing simply, acting justly, building community with solidarity, keep- ing faith, and growing in faith. It can happen anywhere...and for the eight of us our Summer of Immersion happened in our own backyard, in our great city by the bay, forty years after the other Summer of Love. -Alessandro Zanassi . Going to FML every Friday and hanging out together on and off the field proved to be the perfect recipe for a strong team bond. At FML the guys became closer with their spiritual sides and learned the importance of team harmony. After school they worked together in the weight room building strength physically and mentally. On the field they took direction from Coach Blu who they looked up to for advice and guidance. Summer two-a-days planted the seeds for another dynamite season; the team had a bond that was unbreakable. The union of the team was notice- able after they won their first three games, along with put- ting the Bruce game in the bag. The team has taken SI football to the extreame. We would like to thank all of our friends and family members for their continuous support this season. Our season had its ups and down, from the never ending aggressive tryouts to our first game. After a tough few weeks of strenuous league play we made it to the CCS championships and then Nor- Cals. I think that everyone, those both on and off the court, knows how much we have grown as players and as a team this season. Thank you Coach V and Coach Cota for all your time and effort. Working as one family brought them to their suc- cess, but it wasn't easy. They had to learn more about each other before they could contemplate playoffs. Every morning at 7 a.m., the team gathered to prac- tice together. If that were not enough, they also spent a week in the Santa Cruz Mountains at the aptly named Dr. Pain's running camp. It was there that the team spent hours running miles and miles until we threw up, more than 70 miles for most. (Chris Warner '08) All of the hard work paid off however, dur- ing the season, as their impressive sta- tistics show. 8 out of the 65 members of the team made it to the All-WCAL Team, and the Varsity team finished 2nd not only in the WCAl, but in the Central Coast Section as well, thereby qualifying to run in the State Championship meet in November. Despite the pain these athletes endure, runners run because they can't imagine life without it. In es- sence, runners do what we do because it's simple... It's part of us. We live for the practices, cheers, long bus rides, in- vitational, three pairs of shoes o year, water Gatorade, coaches you hate but appreciate, and especially the '1-2-3 BIG SI'... We run for the friends, prac- tices, memories, back roads, pain, com- petition, hills, stories, gossip, dedica- tion, bruises, personal records, starting line, finish line, and bragging rights...it's who we have become. • Ryan Geraghty '08 57 , V Vctrs 1. Zco Mojcoac 4 Kotie Gondolfo 58 59 Varsity Girls' C Some call Cross Country a fall sport, but our team knows cross coun- try really starts the first week of summer. Don't get me wrong; 7 am summer prac- tices in the fog of the Sunset are great, and we know there is some reason to the madness. These summer practices not only build our base for the entire season, but give the team the opportunity to be- come like one, big family- all before Au- gust. Throughout the season, we always work hard. In the pouring rain, we run on the muddy side of Sunset Boulevard. On the hottest days of the year, we run on the Great Highway and only complain a little. Seven repeats up Strawberry Hill? No problem. Some 1200 repeats at the Polo Fields? Easy. A 10 mile long run? Simple. Cross Country requires deter- mination, a lot of heart, and dedication. This season, we swept the WCAL with un- defeated victories on all three levels, won the Central Coast Championships, and will move on to compete in the State Varsity Girls' Cross Country Team ross Country Meet. Physical strength helped us to this point, but it is mostly mental; your forti- tude to keep going no matter how tired your legs are or the number of hills left in the race. Each year before WCAL 3 at Crystal Springs, Coach Regalia gives us the speech everyone has memorized but needs to hear just once more. Run the first mile with your head, be smart. Run the second mile with your legs and use the downhill. And run the third mile with your heart. This sport is all heart; if you don't love it, you hate it. Runners don't run because it's fun. We run for the adrenaline rush as the gun goes off at the starting line. We run for that last 200 meters of a race when you can no longer feel the pain as you pass that one girl right at the finish line. We run to see the result of five long months of hard work. Mostly, however, we run for each other. We have made lasting friend- ships as our team of over 60 girls has be- come one unique piece of all our lives. Check?Check. -Monica Coen '08 60 I. Over the years, rugby was replaced with polo and that is how it stayed since. The intent of the sport is to put a yel- low ball in a net. That's the easy part. While trying to do so, six de- fenders try to stop the six offenders by any means possible. It is truly a game of survival. Water Polo is a team water sport, the key word be- ing team. With a smaller team both physically and numerically this year, the SI boy's varsity coach, Scott Du- mas, was coerced to rethink how he ' Waterpolo would negotiate a win in such a competitive league, considered a top league in Northern California. With that said, we worked incred- ibly hard this year during practice. We practiced at 7 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and in the afternoon for two hours each day. With our morning swims keep- ing us in good condition, afternoon practices were used to work on ball handling, skill, and scrimmage. After each practice, our Captain, John Butler, brought us in for a team cheer, which served as a reminder to play our hardest each and every day. The hard work we put into prac- ticing allowed us to play well during our many tournaments and league games. - Nick Rose 08' First Row: TJ. O'Sullivon, Michael Kutzscher, Ryan Kucher, Cameron Walsh. Cutino once said, To com- pete in sports is to eliminate the comfort zone. Led by seniors Ann Marie Hansen, Lauren Padilla, and Thea Trindle, this SI women's water polo team certainly went beyond their comfort zone this season in many ways. In order to compete in the highly competi- tive WCAL, the team would play out of their comfort zone every game. This fourteen-woman team rose to every challenge, especially in their first round of CCS, where they played Santa Catalina. After a long bus ride to Monterey and Waterpolo a pre-game movie of Mulan, the PoloCats were victorious, beating their opponent 8-5. The SI wom- en's water polo team is certainly one of a kind. What other teams wear costumes while they run around the track, have Halloween parties well before Halloween, and have crazy managers that tell jokes as well as they take stats? Although this team may have a happy and carefree demean- or, they never fail to be fierce competitors in this aggressive sport. Don't worry we’ll beat Mitty next year. 68 Varsity Girls7 Tennis Tennis jumped into gear with tryouts in August, but the players had been working hard since the summer. Tryouts started with intense conditioning. A few girls on the team were appointed as drill sergeants, dressing up in cameo gear and giving orders to their fellow teammates. Through- out the season, the girls had a va- riety of team bonding events from bowling in Monterey to a slee- pover at Julie's house. The tennis cats traveled all the way down to LA to compete in a tennis tournament. Along with spending time at the beach they also played laser tag, giving the girls plenty of time to bond and build team unity. Through this experience the girls managed to fight their way all the way to the CCS semifinals, where they ended their season after a com- petitive match. From the grueling practices and the endless running of plays, the girls' team has played an almost perfect season. Pride is the feeling when the team first puts their team jersey at the beginning of the season. It is developed from within their heart. Each girl keeps her head up whether win or lose, smile or frown. No matter what the outcome, these girls support each other through the strength of their sisterhood. Passion is very evident within these girls. Their love for the game and for each other is what brings the team together. They Basketball are always rooting each other on, as Erin Grady would say, Let's do dis ladies! They have formed an extremely close bond which has included Harmony Ice Cream runs and team dinners... yum. This team is so successful because each player wants to be there. Poise is the way the girls carry themselves in and off the court. They only have the deepest respect for their coaches and fans. Each time they step out on the court they realize how much their peers and coaches support them. The girls keep it clean on the court while still pouring their heart out. The season was filled with ups and downs, but it would have been impossible to do it without pride, passion, and poise. InSignis helps deepen our spiri tual and religious life while teaching us how to lead the school in a true Ignatian way. This year, the InSignis family teaches students how to help others direct their faith and spirituality as they lead unique experiences of prayer and reflection and through our new school wide prayer, the Examen. Synonyms of it are: outstanding, famous, illustrious, considerable, renowned, valuable. The classics have interesting expressions, like Livius' virgins longeante alios specie et pulchritudine insigne | erga aliquem (valuable proof of affection toward another). Ignatius of Loyola uses the term in this phrase of the Spiritual Exercises: qui magis desiderabunt insignes se exhibere omni servitio (those who desire to show greater devotion and to distinguish themselves in total service). 109 Jade Bafstone created the Not For Sale club at St. Ignatius with the influence of her father's organization. With the support of students and faculty, Not For Sale strives to make a difference for people living, or having lived, in bondage. IMSFF provides financial aid to injured warriors who have trouble affording medical attention, mortgages, rents, etc. Men give up their lives in battle just so some strangers can still be free and keep their rights. We □ re SI Live, Si's fourth most popular comedy sketch dub. We write, direct, cast, and act in our own jkits. Are you picking up what I'm putting down? Just in case you aren't, are you familiar with Satur- day Night Live? Just picture that... with your fellow classmates as the actors. Every autumn we cast and rehearse, and then have a performance dur- ing the end of October to the beginning of Nove- mber. In the Spring, we write the show for the next year. DONUT DO NOT ask us to do two shows a year... we can't handle being funny for that long. Through it all, we are guided through adventures in Hilarious Land by the great Fawal, whom you might also know as Faweasle, Fawaffle, Fawalrus, Fawal Street Journal, the Fawizard of Oz... and a cornucopia of other creative names. The second goal s to foster dialogue and community between the student body, faculty, and administration of the school. So when we plan and host dances, help or- ganize the magazine drive, host lunchtime activities, decorate the school, put together teacher apprecia- tion weeks, select the faculty representative to the discipline board, and respond to the requests of stu- dents, teachers, and administrators, we always have these goals in mind and seek to achieve them. 127 Social 'Justice' lOWER DIVISION 1. For the past two years, our club's main project has been Project Night-Night. This Bay Area organization collects its signature tote bags, each contain- ing one book, one blanket and one stuffed animal. Once as- sembled, the bags are picked up and given to homeless children in shelters all over Northern California. To assist this mission, we asked the SI student body to donate blankets, stuffed animals, and books and were able to make about 125 complete bogs. We also planned a fundraiser that raised close to $700 At our Wednesday meetings, we make about 150-20C sandwiches that are distributed the next day at the Thurs day Morning Comfort Runs. Finally, we are involved in aid ing the Upper Division Social Justice Club in the Christma: Drive. I've written a third, which I still need to edit, and I hope to write a dozen more. • Mr. Totah What is one of your favorite class moments? A student was reciting Frost's Home Burial, and for some reason decided to deliver her lines from on top of the table. After a few minutes she forgot she was on the table, falling over backwards and hitting the floor. She got right up and finished her lines like it never happened. As a psychology teacher and as a history teacher, in terms of current events, I am most interested by people's lack of interest, lack of concern, and lack of participation in their government. Allison O' oyle, Campbell Van Echcn, Sophia Caprctta To the Right: freshmen enjoying their first year in high school, but still working hard to maintain decent grades. THE START OF AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY Lockers, a rotating schedule, and mul- tiple teachers: just a few new things Freshmen experience. Intimidating upperclassmen, fright- ening teachers, and endless embarassing mo- ments are just some of the troubles freshmen go through. But don't be fooled, being a freshman is great! During our first year in high school, we met new people and extended our friend- ships beyond our grammar school peers. Over- whelmed by Si's large student body, we still managed to maintain old friendships, form new bonds, and create meaningful connections with a diverse number of Wildcats. Freshmen year encouraged us to extend our extra curricular activities by trying out for new sports, learning the true meaning of fine arts, and finding passions in numerous clubs. As heavy textbooks filled our school bags. Si's rigorous curriculum doubled the workload. We spent numerous hours strug- gling with homework and experiencing finals. Our teachers guided us through our journey as we developed into stronger and hopeful students. Each year we establish new friend- ships and encourage ourselves to participate in and outside of the classroom. Freshman year was an extraordinary journey, but if is just the beginning of our high school career. This was the year we transitioned from being Wildcats to becoming Ignatians. nsh rie i 165 I Siobohn Smith, Oltvio Roggio, Alex Stanley 2. Kel- ly Notch. Brett Bruncmon { T)C lHif F(H ______ Your Thoughts 178 When asked where her talent in dance comes from, she will say it comes from her interest in music. As the only freshman to make the dance and drill team, Jessica Reci- nos proved to be a capable dancer. Music, she says, calms me down and helps me think. It also inspires me to dance. I like a variety of music because it motivates me. I sometimes wake up in the morning with my headphones still on my ears! At school, you will see her dancing her heart out at the Bruce rallies. But because dance and music are her passion, she incor- porates them into her everyday life. Music even helps me focus when doing homework or projects. Jessica can often be seen outside the gym everyday practicing with her dance and drill team. Her friends say they really enjoy dancing with her and can't wait to see her the next day with her new dance moves. At home, she laughs as she tells me, If I'm bored, all I have to do is turn on the music and start dancing. It's a great feeling! Keep dancing Jessica! While Brian was still in grammar school, doctors de- termined that his father had a deadly ul- cer in his stomach that nearly killed him. This incident greatly impacted Brian and his family. Fortunately, Brian was blessed with great friends that were eager to pitch in and lend him a hand. Thanks to these amazing friends Brians worked through this difficult time; he saw the light at the end of tunnel. During this time Brian really tried hard to focus on his school work. Brian developed a good work ethic that he brought to high school. He applied this work ethic to math and is now in Algebra 2 Honors. Brian has become the go-to guy for math. From the incident with his father, Brian has learned the importance of friends . He now always makes an effort to help his pals with their homework, math especially. Since the news of his father Brian is still able to crack a few jokes. With his com- bination of great jokes and a dazzling smile, he can cheer up anyone on a sad day. The ro- tating schedule, locker combinations, and high side low side rooms were second nature to us, well, for the most part. We were no longer the newbies, the lowly freshmen. Sophomore year-easy. But just to add a little spice, we now had op- tional honors and A.P. courses, along with varsity sports. With fine arts, only one se- mester of world history, and elective P.E., we had more time to relax and stress less (besides the last minute projects due the next day). During fourth period lunch, we ruled the Student Center and Com- mons as lower classmen leaders. We saw this year as an opportunity to branch out into new friendship. We grew into ONE. Now sophomore year is over, half of high school is done. What will come of us dur- ing junior year? I. As a sophomore at Saint Ignatius, Mickey has jumped at the opportunity to become involved in the school. He's a member of both the mixed chorus and stage crew, along with a player of the JV Boys Volleyball team. At SI, Mickey currently takes Japanese and he enjoys World History. Outside of school, an interesting fact about Mickey is that he has been to over 30 states in the US and a total of twelve countries. Born and raised in San Francis- co, Mickey has been a part of the San Francisco Boys chorus for eight year. This music program is highly respected and definitely a challenge. He began at the young age of seven. Mickey also has been in eight professional operas, a venue of theater requiring talent, skill and a lot of dedication. Mickey is far more than just a student; his achievements at SI are just glimpses of what he's accomplished. -Brooke Carter Dylon McGuire Mary Mclnorney Seamus Mclrwnoy Yra Meehleib Soph-a Melone Javier Mena Jessica Meredith Matthew Micheti Chelsea Miller Oavid Misner Mariana Molina Michael Moore Monico Moroloi Megan Moran John Morrison Dillon Moscone Robert Munqio Bryce Murphy Erin Morphy Trevor Murphy James Morroy looron Morroy Natalia Narvaez Alexander Nosh William Nooghton Melanie Navorro Michael Navarro Peter Nelson Christine Neville Dominic Newmonn Janis Ng Thao Nguyen Julia Nunes Devin O’Brien Eilise O'Connor James O'Donoghuo Daniel O leary Emma O'leory John O'Malley Megan O'Meara Timotlw O'Reilly Kelly O'Rourke Joseph Okomendy louro Oliver Camillo Ong Abigail Otto Angola Owczorck Julia Pcpalc Soroh Pork David Poling Julia Pavicic Garrett Peck Aorin Peguese John Pertsch Michael Pizzo Michelle Poimboouf Mauricio Ponce Roslyn Pontius Kathryn Pope John Quinlan Phoebe Quinlan Bernadette Robuy Pierson Roconelh Jon Rond Joseph Reovey Michael Roher Martin Rcidy Joerellc Rivero Solia Robinson Astrid Robles Seamus Roddy Henry Rodgers Pedro Rodriguez-Gorcio louren Roaer Nicholas Komon Olivia Romero Spencer Rosen lowell Kevin Roxos Dominique Russo Hunter Ryan Chrislion Samonre Miguel Sanchez Tanya Sanderson Giancark) Songiocomo Elisa Santos Pomelo Santos Stefanie Sontos Jocnno Soribolis Amondo Schaffer Ronald Schrvo 191 1. Monica Morales You've probably seen her on stage or on the track, but you probably don't know much behind the girl with the dimpled smile. After participating in several SI activi- ties such as dance workshop, track, WWC, Hui O Kama'aina, Japanese Society, An- ime Club, and Book Club, Monica takes her daily trip to the Westlake School for the Performing Arts (WSPA) in Daly City, where she then pulls on her ballet shoes and danc- es for 4 hours a day Monday through Fri- day and 5 hours on Saturday. Monica has been dancing ballet for 12 years and this was her 11th year at WSPA. In addition to ballet, Monica dances modern, hula and Tahitian, and has experience in tap, gymnas- tics, and jazz. She's competed in renowned competitions including the Youth American Grand Prix, International Dance Challenge, and Showstoppers, as well as performed in the prestigious Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland and WSPA's annual production of The Nutcracker. Through dance at WSPA she's learned many life lessons such as through hard work, you develop physical and mental discipline, dedication, and perse- verance. The possibilities are endless when you believe in yourself. Some may wonder what motivates such dedication. Monica says that dance practice and rehearsing can sometimes be grueling, but the rewards of developing confidence from having good technique are empowering. Monica contin- ually pushes herself to be a better student, better dancer athlete, and most importantly, a better person. Striving to become that bet- ter person, Monica doesn't hesitate to share her talent with others as a teacher's assistant at WSPA for ballet, tap, and hula, and as a dancer for the senior citizens at the Doelger Senior Center. -Monica Dizon 197 VjA (WuNtutre , Words of Wiscf Nikki Narvaez If you ain't first....you're last. -Ricky Bobby If you wanna be somebody, if you want to go some- where, you better wake up and pay attention. None of us expected to take on such overwhelming responsibilities. We heard that junior year was nearly impossible from others, yet at that time it was intangible, but we wereaboutto experience it first-hand. We tried to do our best by giving everything we had in and out of the class- room. Our limits were tested with extra homework, less sleep, and college prepa- rations. Even though it was tough, we aren't lying when we say we loved it. We made sure we made time for our friends on the weekends, supported our teams on the field, and danced the night away at Junior Prom. Not only was this year great, it was unpredictable, transforming, and un- comparable. It was unpredictable in the sense that we made new friends when we had previously thought our social groups were settled. We transformed to- gether to become more unified, more mature, and more aware of the world around us. This year was uncomparable because we took our minds, hearts, and souls places where they have never been. Thanks to our experiences this year we will continue to push the limits wherever we go. We will continue to strive for ex- cellence and become more compassionate human beings. With a deeper understand- ing of the world we will truly become men and women with and for others. We will continue to be unified; together as one. u tit'rs 201 I es i Stress levels are high, hours of sleep are low, what could it be? ... Junior year! As the class of 2009 ven- tured into this rigorous year, the pressure of SAT's and extra- curricular activities filled our minds along with the thoughts of college preparations for the near future. Nevertheless, we experienced the excitements getting driver's licenses, to prom, having 5th pe- lunch and finally becom- upper classmen. As we embarked upon third year of high school, work became harder, sports became more and the extra- activities became more demanding. We faced the challenges of our very first AP class (for some nore), going to GOYB's,intepree varsity matches, and ftualiyT playing the part of role models for underclassmen. Simultaneously, we recognized our responsibilities in the SI community and began to solidify them. We began to fill the roles of Ignatian men and women as we took on leading positions with greater privileges and responsibilities, and immersed ourselves in different surround- ings. It was a year of self- discovery, as our limits were pushed, causing us to strive for betterment. Sean Borella was originally a child from a family of 5 boys. When he was in kindergarten, his parents decid- ed that they wanted to adopt a girl into the Borella family. I thought it would be cool, I didn't mind, Sean replied as we asked him how he felt about the new addition to his family as a kindergartener. Howev- er, they didn't know was that their future sister would be blind. Sean comments, At first I thought it was different, we had to guide her around the house, but now it's not a big deal and we don't notice anymore. Also, he is protective of his little sister, Kids would make fun of her. As an older brother, I feel obligated to pro- tect her. In addition, Sean started to try to learn Braille this summer at the request of his sister. His sister current- ly has a Braille Club at her school, and she teaches the other kids at her school how to read Braille. 1 Jeona Gragani, Arionno Papolexopoulos 2. Nick Bonn, Michele Kern 3. Embarrassing Moments told by anonymous juniors 'Tripping in the Freshman hall while there was basi- cally the entire Frosh class there, but right after I said, 'Move out of the hallway freshman! ' The first week of school, I introduced myself to a se- nior and they asked me if I was a freshman. I still find myself on the wrong side of the building at times. Top: Nikki Mancini, Kylee lin Middle: Teresa Carino. George Coker Bottom: Nick Bonn, Theresa Woods When I gave a ride to a friend of mine, my car smelled like dirt and sweat due to constant use after my sport's practice. During the second week of classes I went to 4th pe- riod lunch first and was late to my 4th period class. Calling a senior a freshman. Mattimore was walking toward me while I was at my locker so I blushed and turned quickly away, slamming my head directly into my locker door which was still open. He just laughed at me and hasn't acknowledged me since... One time I was walking up the stairs and the only other person n the stairway was Paul Toboni, who was eating some really nice looking carrots. It was awkwardly silent so in a lame attempt to say hi, I said, Nice carrots. He gave me a really strange look so I blushed and sprinted away as fast as Seabiscuit. I didn't realize my bag was unzipped, so when I had picked up enough speed, all my books fell out. Luckily I was long gone before he caught a glimpse of that! Slipping and falling in the food line the first day of school. I was walking down the hallway by myself when I saw this guy my friends and I have a nickname for. So he doesn't know me or anything but when I saw him walking past I said 'Hey, [nickname]!' He looked at me like I was crazy and kept walking. I hate blowing my nose in the middle of class, espe- cially when I have to every 5 seconds. People try not to make it seem obvious that they aren't watch- ing you in total disgust! 215 Katie Belden I don't mind that much, Katie I Belden tells us when we asked I her about how she felt having a speech impediment, yet we realize that Katie has struggled a lot growing up. Katie Belden was born with a speech im- pediment, a common thing for infants to have; however, she didn't grow out of it. When she was around 7 years old, she took speech therapy for about two years. Katie says, It didn't work, and the rea- son I quit was because people were mak- ing fun of me. After that, she went on dealing with what people thought about her impediment. She mentions to us that she has sung the famous nursery rhyme Row, Row, Row Your Boat many times, like in front of the 8th grade class, for her sister's college friends, and for someone's birthday, because her friends and family thought it was entertaining. On the other hand, Katie's sense of humor made every- thing easy to handle. She would laugh about it, but only if it is in moderation. Sometimes, she mentions, It's all they talk about. Con- versely, she utilized her impediment to find true friends. I pick friends based on who I'm comfortable talking in front of. It's a good way to judge someone's character. Katie is able to find true goodness within people thanks to her impediment. Now, Ka- tie barely notices the way she talks. She's involved in many extra-curricular activities like CSF, Social Justice, Spanish Club, and Service Club. I. Madison Davis, Tolia Giordano 2. Drew Raher, Natalie Songiacomo, Meghan Tracey 3. V- - $ we succeeded in the most challenging year of high school for all of us, at the end of the road, we contemplated: Was junior year something I would rather forget or something I will cherish forever? Some would rather laugh about the good times, but never think about how much homework they used to have. Meanwhile, others wish to relive every single day of the year, even the rough times. Good or bad, together we “ grew to be better citizens, better friends, and better students. We realized that we can make a differ- ence once we put ourselves into it, whether through starting clubs, being a team captain, or tutoring. We came to know more about ourselves as we dove into the depths of humanity and our souls in Ethics class. Then, we all scoffed at the age old saying that juniors are the leaders of the school. Yet, was the saying overused? Were juniors only su- perficial models of the school? Quite the contrary: juniors together grew and changed into more con- scientious Ignatians. They, together, unfolded the mysteries that high school brought upon them. No matter how tough the year was, we learned that what doesn't kill us can only make us stonger. 219 Gabriel Abinante A Microwave is Juit o Deep Fryer for Sissies. After her family moved from Switzerland to the U.S. in 1998, Adeline began her art career, although she'd been drawing all her life. She doesn't know exactly where the interest stems from but explains, My inspiration is everything: the entire and beautiful world around me! I love looking back at childlike ideas, and colorful things that show happiness. In short, God and ev- erything inspire me. A lover of all forms of art and self-expression, Adeline finds her true passion in animation. She possesses a style that's completely her own through combinations of art through the ages, giv- ing particular credit to Surrealist and Dada movements. Pop Art, and Psychadelic art from the sixties. My signature is color, lots and lots of col- or! So I deal mostly with abstract concepts, like emotions and dreams, which I execute through colorful and graphic images. Ade- line is a two-time California State Summer School for the Arts for Visual Arts (CSSSA) alum after living as a student artist for four weeks over the summer, and completing a se- mester of college Visual Arts and Animation. When asked about her favorite subject, she replied, I do love to explore childhood ideas like fairy tales, dreams, and colors! I also re- ally like the hippie ideals of peace, love, and flower power. My goal through my art is to make people happy, and also to inspire peo- ple to work for a better world full of peace and love. Evan started snowboarding when he was 7 years old. He realized snowboarding was his true pas- sion. Evan joined a snowboarding team at Northstar during his freshman year and gained hands on experi- ence repairing, selling, and buying snowboards while working at a shop in Millbrae. Although Evan practices safe snowboarding, he had a scary run-in with death during sophomore year. He was on Village Run at the end of a long day at Northstar; exhausted, unaware, uncautious. While going down a long slope, he saw an unusually large mound of snow on the other side of the tunnel. Before he could stop, he crashed into a tree and fell. Evan couldn't move for about 30 minutes due to exhaustion. The worse part was I had to pay 100 bucks for a new helmet, Evan said jokingly. Although Evan was originally forced to go to snowboarding les- sons, he now throughouly enjoys going to the slopes to catch some fresh powder. Snowboarding has led Evan to a number of great opportunites. He has met a lot of important company representatives and other snowboarders through teams and competitions. The possibility of working as a technician or company rep- resentative is something that he sees in his future. Anthony Howley At the age of 3, Anthony Howely put on his first pair of skis and awkwardly made his way down a small snowy hill in Mammouth Lakes. He wasn't on the bunny slopes for long though, because it soon became apparent that he was a natural at the sport. In the company of his dad, brother, and cousins, Anthony went skiing as often as he could and progressed in skill each winter. Eventually, a representative from a local shop, Kitredge Winter Sports, noticed Anthony and asked if he would be interested in skiing under his shop's title. Anthony excitedly accepted and skiied every other weekend for two and a half years, until junior year when he decided to focus on school. Although he is no lon- ger sponsered, Anthony still skies has often as he can. He says, Gliding on the slopes is a feeling that you can feel nowhere else in the world. He also finds enjoyment away from the icy mountains of the Sierra Nevada. Anthony surfs, mountain bikes, body boards, and river rafts. So, if you ever feel like hitting the slopes you know who to call. If you could bring one teacher with you to help you survive in the rainfor- est, who would you bring? Begin- ning his career at the SI campus on Stanyan Street in 1966, he worked in the main office. Recognizing his talent and dedication to SI, he was appointed as the Dean of Students in 1969. For forty-two years Brother Draper has inspired and influenced the lives of the SI students and fac- ulty members. Today, he is a Dean, as well as a teacher and leader. Demonstrating the significance of self-discipline, he enforces principles of which he hopes students will uphold into their adult lives. Whether the lesson re- gards promptness, following the dressing code, etc., he works with the students' best interest at heart. Brother Draper loves mingling infor- mally with the student body wheth- er in the lunch line, at school events, or in the halls. Yet, the most difficult part of his job occurs when stu- dents fight and perpetuate when they're in the wrong. With all of his past experiences and involvement in the SI community, Brother Draper ultimately stands as a highly respectable and revered Dean, friend, and individual. For his years of constant service, hard work, and devotion, we say thank you, we love you, and we will miss you! To the Graduating Class of 2008: You are all very good and intelligent people. I wish you all the best! -Brother Draper 268 'For four decades I have watched students 30 from fearing Brother Draper to loving 2nd respecting him over their 4 years at SI. rhe reason for this is that Brother Draper s a person who is very fair, and his job equires that he make difficult decisions, iut, I think when students graduate, they jltimately remember him for the interest and :are he had for their growth during their ime at SI. -Mr. C. Murphy Brother Draper epitomizes what it means to be a Brother in the Society of Jesus. He is a leader as servant, work- ing with all the gifts God has given him in service to the students and faculty of SI. I had the pleasure of working very closely with him the past 26 years of my administra- tive life here, and I have learned the value of hard work, compassion, and good humor in carrying out the mission of the school. I wish him well in his new endeavors at the prep next year and thank him profusely for his wisdom and friendship. -Mr. Charlie Dullea I have worked with a lot of deans in my 30 years of teaching, and more than any other, Brother Draper has made it easy for me to teach because he keeps order in the building.
