Immersion Students With and For Others In the 9th Ward, our group worked with a partnership between Habitat for Humanity and Paotist Crossroads Project to build a house from the ground up for Lucretia Taylor and her three children. We worked from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for five days in the scorching southern heat, something we had never experi- enced in the Sunset District. After the first day, each of us collapsed from exhaustion caused by the heavy lifting and back-breaking work. But we came together as a group and fought through the pain to com- plete our project. We were not the only ones who lent a hand to help the new Orleans cause. By working with locals and people from all other the country, we gained more from this exerience than we had ever anticipated. Everyone who worked on the house with us took time off from his or her fulltime jobs to help out. One man who stood out in our group was Dan, our project leader from lousiana. Although he could be controversial at time, he taught us about Southern culture and was very interested in our California cul- ture as wel.. The people of New Orleans told us to share their stories, and we will never forget them. We set the foundation for 1813 Alvar in the Ninth Ward. What is the most embarrasing mo- ment on your London, Paris, Rome Trip? Walking into, and using the men’s re- stroom in Paris. The language barrier was way too difficult for me to handle! -Emma Skelton ‘08 What was your favorite country to visit? Ah too hard to pick! In England, the shopping was amazing. The muse- ums were fabulous in Paris. I am still full from the food I ate in Italy! -Katie Nolan ‘08 Summer ‘06 has been quite eventful for Saint Ignatius stu- dents. Trips organized and trav- led by wildcats went all over the world. Mr. Isham brought stu- dents from ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09 to London, Paris, and Rome. Senor Caffaso traveled to Spain with a festive group of current seniors. Also in Spain, ladycats patrici- pated in the great learning expier- ence of the Spanish Exchange Program. Costa Rica Julia Klein, Rebecca Martinez, Jeffrey Monticelli, Sarah O’Leary, Andy Ragni, Katherine Warren, Priscilla Wong. Darryl Yip. Our Costa Rica trip was filled with excitement, new friendships, community, simple living, fun, and rewarding work! In the mornings we ran a “winter break” camp for the children of Ignacio Gutierrez Elementary School. We went on nature walks, made art projects, beaded earrings, played soccer and volleyball, held contests, and even played with a Slip n’ Slide! During the afternoons we cleaned and painted their dilapidated school. It was hard work, but we had fun, especially when our friends Jorge Luis, Juan Jose, Luis Miguel, Jassiel and Oscar ;ame over to help us! The community welcomed us with open arms, and often the people in the community in- ited us over for “cafecito” to drink coffee and socialize after we finished. We miss our Costa Rican community and families, but our trip was Pura Vida! -Becky Martinez ‘07 Student Life 0 21
