With his collar undone, he warmly wel- comes the interviewers. The meeting is spontaneous and natural, and the in- terviewers gradually discover the man behind the name: Walsh, Father Walsh. Ignatian: How do you think the SI experience has changed since you were a student? Fr. Walsh: Well, it was radically different on the Stanyan Street Campus. We were crammed into a small four story building with one gym and a dirt track. The facilities the students enjoy today do not even compare to my humble time at SI. That being said, the quality of the education was amazing. A dif- ference is that two thirds of my teachers were Jesuits, and I also had many great lay teachers. Also, the curriculum has drastically changed since I was a student when there were hardly any electives offered. The students at SI today have many more options in choosing classes. Also, the students in the class- room have changed over the years. When I was a student, at least 90% of the students lived in the city, and it was all boys! The demographics of the student body have definitely evolved, and SI today is a very diverse and wonderful place. Ignatian: How do you feel coming back to SI after a hiatus? Fr. Walsh: It is an honor to return to my alma mater to give back a little of what I once received. Ignatian: What is your typical day like? Fr. Walsh: I feel like I am a juggler, a topic is only in my hand for a second be- fore I toss it to do something else. For example, I want to do all the fun stuff like athletic games, retreats, and campus ministry events, but my job requires some more serious activities like Board of Regents and Finance Meetings. Ignatian: What did you want to be when you were in high school? Fr. Walsh: I wanted to be one of two things: a teacher or an architect. When I became a Jesuit, I never thought I could be both! But when I was President down at Loyola, I helped to plan a new 60,000 square foot addition to the school. Now at SI, I love being able to do more architectural work planning our new constructions. I feel so lucky to be able to fulfill these dreams. Ignatian: What was your favorite subject in school? Fr. Walsh: I most enjoyed studying theology and philosophy. Actually, phi- losophy was quite tedious, but I stuck with it and studied the equivalence of a Master’s degree. I could see a student of philosophy being a lawyer, but I never was interested in that. When I was a junior or senior in high school, it sounds creepy, but I did feel a calling from God. I have always had an affinity for all things spiritual, and I knew being a Jesuit was what God wanted for me. We worked from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for five days in the scorching southern heat, something we had never experi- enced in the Sunset District. After the first day, each of us collapsed from exhaustion caused by the heavy lifting and back-breaking work. But we came together as a group and fought through the pain to com- plete our project. We were not the only ones who lent a hand to help the new Orleans cause. By working with locals and people from all other the country, we gained more from this exerience than we had ever anticipated. Everyone who worked on the house with us took time off from his or her fulltime jobs to help out. One man who stood out in our group was Dan, our project leader from lousiana. Although he could be controversial at time, he taught us about Southern culture and was very interested in our California cul- ture as wel.. The people of New Orleans told us to share their stories, and we will never forget them. We set the foundation for 1813 Alvar in the Ninth Ward. Genesis Winter 2007 -Mike Bellinqs ‘07 020 Student Life Costa Rica Julia Klein, Rebecca Martinez, Jeffrey Monticelli, Sarah O’Leary, Andy Ragni, Katherine Warren, Priscilla Wong. Darryl Yip. Our Costa Rica trip was filled with excitement, new friendships, community, simple living, fun, and rewarding work! In the mornings we ran a “winter break” camp for the children of Ignacio Gutierrez Elementary School. We went on nature walks, made art projects, beaded earrings, played soccer and volleyball, held contests, and even played with a Slip n’ Slide! During the afternoons we cleaned and painted their dilapidated school. It was hard work, but we had fun, especially when our friends Jorge Luis, Juan Jose, Luis Miguel, Jassiel and Oscar ;ame over to help us! The community welcomed us with open arms, and often the people in the community in- ited us over for “cafecito” to drink coffee and socialize after we finished. We miss our Costa Rican community and families, but our trip was Pura Vida! -Becky Martinez ‘07 Student Life 0 21 Imagine packing your clothes, toiletries, necessities, and luxuries for a three night camping expedition. You need to pad light, as little as possible.. What would you bring? What would you leave behind? Which items would you prioritize ove others? This is how the Sacramento Immersion experienced first hand the tenet of simple living. 8 of us traveled to Loaves and Fishes park in Sac Town the bare necessities to survive a three night sleep in a park. Upon arrival, we were shockec with the seemingly impossible news that our stuff was to be locked up and only retrieved 10 minutes before and afte bedtime, as well as upon completion of our 3 night excursion. Basically, the point of this was to experience homeless ness as best as we could. If you go on immersion, your experience will be similar to mine. At first, you’ll think to yourself “How can I survive without a cell phone? A TV? The internet? How can I survive without taking a shower twice a day, o drinking my Starbucks in the morning?” The truth is, you’ll never realize how unnecessary those things are until you gc on immersion. It’s not until you step out of your comfort zone and take risks that you realize there can be more interest ing things in life, like a good story or the company of a friend. Hopefully, the tenant of Simple Living will not only maks you grateful for what you have, but also realize what you truly “need” isn’t something you can shove in the duffel bag anc bring with you, but it definitely is something you will be bringing back with you and giving to everyone back home. Yesterday Where needles drip the tears of thousands, and broken glass from broken bottles, make broken people and broken smiles. Where weed is planted not in dirt, but into the hearts of addiction. Where gunshots ring in the ears of crying babies, just to hit those left behind by our generations. Where women get raped by the greed on the streets. Where children hide in Bible school, to escape the disease of gentrification. Where you can shoot up right before you get shot up. Where a one-way bus can only take them away from their families. Where the only thing that cuts deeper than a knife, is the scar left by the hatred in the eyes of those who look away. Today Where we wash the dirt off the dishes to clean our minds. Where the stench of onions make us cry tears of compassion, and even the strongest forearms can’t lift the weight of “Holy Socks.” Where broken toothbrushes can't clean the beauty in a Gatorade Bar. Where Spades and War are the only places we can lose our pride and Achilles is the only one who can hit our hearts. Where mosquito bites coincide with the blood willing to be shed for others. Where the brown of Nutella and the white of shav- ing cream are the only differences of color in our eyes. Tomorrow Where the sore feet of the streets can soar amongst the birds. Where the raggedy canes can support the broken backs of the toothless and shopping carts won’t be pushed as homes but filled with food. Where wet sprinkles flood our minds with the reality of life. Where restless eyes can eat our happiness and torn feet are washed. Where pony tailed brothers beat beats the break down walls. Where planted gardens bring rocky smiles, and beautiful wood chips spread layers of love. -Tacoma Immersion 2007 Baynes, Giuliana Blasi, Rachel Cusing, Ben Lo, Jared Muscat, David Polhemus, Natalie Raggio. According to Brother Draper, these upgrades make students “more accountable”; however accountability does not equal comfort. Sure, the computerized attendance makes it harder to cut class and the desks don’t allow you doze off as easily, but the technology amazes everyone and the classrooms look awesome. We patiently await completion the outdoor construction, despite the losses of our favorite outdoor short cuts. While we wait for the reveal of Si’s future additions, the teachers and students have reached a general consensus regarding the classrooms and technology. The students say that the desks are uncomfortable, while the teachers feel as though the technology is frustrating. Thank goodness that first impressions are not always lasting impressions. “They took away the character of the classrooms, made them sterile, and I don’t like the desks because they are hard to move around.” - Drew Lawson “Sneaky suspicion designed so students can’t fall asleep watching PBS movies during Mr. Murphy’s physics class.” “I always enjoy hearing a drum roll as the nifty projectors come down.” - Kevin Woods - Adrienne Syme and Alex Krannenburg Student Life 029 Fall Play An American Daughter Set in Washington, D.C., AN AMERICAN DAUGHTER fo- cuses on Dr. Lyssa Dent Hughes, a health care expert and forty-something daughter of a long-time Senator. When the President nominates Lyssa to a Cabinet post, an indiscre- tion from her past is discovered. The media turns it into a scandal which imperils her confirmation and divides her family and friends. Lyssa is forced to make a decision: con- tinue to pursue the post and face an ugly Senate hearing; or decline the nomination, becoming a sacrificial lamb for the President. Partisan politics in our nation’s capital, however, are nothing compared to the personal politics in Lyssa’s liv- ing room, where complicated relationships unravel with her father, husband and her best girlfriend —not to mention the awkward encounters she has with an exuberant neo-feminist author and a relentless TV journalist. “This year the play was a lot of fun to do. The plot was subtly funny and had adult themes but was still a great experience. The cast this year was really interesting, there were a lot of veterans to theatre and also a lot of newbies, which made for an interesting time. We had a lot of fun and worked really hard, me it seemed like this experience went by way too fast and I wish it could have lasted longer. -Jessica Times “The most intellectually taxing piece SI has staged in years provided a delightful opportunity for audience members to grapple with the difficult issues of gender, leadership, honesty, and family while cast members grappled with Wendy Wasserstein’s witty dialogue.” -Jessica Rizzo “Play like a champion today.” - Joe Tursi 030 Student Life 1. Naughton ‘07 Winter Pops A Chorus Line For Winter Pops participants, the fall semester was filled with weekly late night practices, and anxious expec- tation. Talented St. Ignatius singers and instrumentalists of all grades were nervous and excited, but thoroughly prepared for a grueling two weeks of nightly performances. After the massive audience piled into Bannan Theatre, Winter Pops 2006 was under way once Mr. Sablinsky took the stage. The Wildcat Stage Band began the show with a beautiful rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and interacted with the audience in the playful ballad, “Alright, Okay, You Win.” Handbell ringers played with good vibra- tions and an in-sync style. The Symphonic Orchestra blew the audience away with exciting tunes such as, “Square Dance,” and “Promenade and Great Gate of Kiev.” Mixed Chorus and Chamber Singers gracefully expressed their renditions of traditional sounds, and songs from foreign lands. The show stayed true to the holiday spirit by con- cluding the concert with the festive anthem, “Sleigh Ride.” Pops participants were a truly great “Chorus Line.” SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA Lisa Chan. Frosh Football was a year of fumbles, tee-holders and shaved heads. On our first series, an SLV defender ripped the ball out of our quarterbacks grasp and ran it back for a TD. However, things improved when we became the first team at any level to beat Valley Christian for the first time in SI history, thanks to Joe Darza’s hall of fame performance. The season finished out with a bang as we won the rest of our games, forcing Coach Stecher to shave his head. By the way. who could forget Paul MacFarlane. our ALL-WCAL tee- holder? We went to JV Year where we endured our first summer weights, double days and red jerseys. Chris Blohm talked for the first time this year. Summers was a little too good for JV and Don Dianda forgot he was not in the NFL as he thought he could dance after he recorded a sack. Don't worry Harry; I think Coach Vollert finally stopped replay- ing your encounter with Rhett Ellison. The Cathedral boys. Carter. Manteuffel and Adebayo. decided to jump on the bandwagon while Dan Zimmerman could not play night games in fear of a full moon. Finally, according to Tom Barth. “Michael Vick is Ridiculous. Our first year of varsity was characterized by the first ever-home playoff game, five straight wins and yes unfortunately a barn-burning 3-0 loss to Los Gatos. Chris McCaffery met Rob Jones (Chris Blohm met Mike Tyson), and Ohan was so hungry that he ate paper. Junior year was a rough transistion from JV year but the game hardened Cats never gave up hope. Over these last four years. I contribute much of our success to such emotional speeches as Coach Virk’s impression of Nike. They started the season in true SI fashion by making a name for themselves and scaring much of the competition. The team, made up of many girls who have played together since freshman year, demonstrated discipline and good sportsmanship troughout their play this season. When the WCAL season began, everyone knew that the calibur of players were going to challenge their skills and de- mand that they step it up a level. The girls were quick to respond, winning a number of difficult matches and making a good show at several tournaments. With many matches go- ing into four or five games, the girls showed that they can play with the best of them and do very well. It was touching to watch this team come together and create a sense of comradere that resulted lifelong friendships and many successes on the court. -Kerry Grady ‘07 0 54 Sports Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Sports 05 5 1. There have been some good times, some great times, and definitely a lot of hor- rible times. The thing about cross-country is that everyone who runs it loves it. There is no faking this sport. It is all or nothing. About 5 out of 6 days of the week are awful days at the beginning of prac- tice. Either school was long, the workout is super hard, or you are just tired. All of these things sound terrible, but when you get out there, running with your friends, everything seems to go away. More so than anything, my favorite part of cross-country, besides running, has been the friends I have made O 062 Sports -JJ Fritz ‘07 along the way. I honestly believe that, in this sport, people become so much closer on so many differ- ent levels than in any other sport. In other sports, there are balls, nets, and plays that you have to worry about while practicing. What we do in prac- tice is talk and become closer. I have had the best times nf mv lift with the nirls I have met on this team, and I have made bonds so strong that I know I will keep them forever, and that is the most important thing to me. It was a season which will be remembered as the turn around point for the Water Polo Program. The season was full of unforgettable games; however the October 5th duel against Mitty was perhaps the most noteworthy. The game punctuated by a spread offensive at- tack, a shut down defense, and a loud sup- portive crowd; SI took home the victory 11-8, and ended the event with a fight song which rung loud and clear throughout the Herbst Natatorium. Organizations 1 2 6 zj Ignatian Spirit through Dance Passing through the gym foyer, one may notice blaring music and twenty-five talented students coordinating their bodies to learn new choreography. This is none other than a Dance and Drill rehearsal, led by four CORE members in preparation for future club performanc- es. Dance and Drill is a student-run organization that bolsters Ignatian pride through dance. After passing a difficult audition, select members practice three hours a week under CORE’S leader- ship. CORE members choreograph and teach original routines that range from jazz to hip-hop styles. The final product is a compilation of dances to be performed at major rallies, school events, and athletic games, including the Basketball Bruce Mahoney. While Dance and Drill’s task sounds simplistic, it demands vision, creativity, hard work, and dedication from its CORE in addition to the cooperation of the team. However, performance is a reward in itself, outweighing the sweat, frustration, and sacrifices that the challenge entails. We are reminded that our efforts are worth it when we can dance on the gym floor, steeped in the wildcat spirit of the stu- dent body that is SI. Each year we organize the shadow program, an in-school experience for 8th graders, and we give tours at the Open House. During the shadow visits. WWC's biggest program, ' either a freshman or a sophomore escorts an 8th grade visitor around the St. Ignatius campus and the visitor attends two classes, usually and upper division class and a lower division class. Another mam activity of WWC is the ' Open House. WWC members are responsible for the Red Tour, or the tour of the academic building. A member of WWC prides himself or herself on being a model represents-' tive of St. Ignatius, especially since members deal directly with applicants. A WWC member must be welcoming, friendly, demonstrate knowledge of St. Ignatius, and possess an overall positive attitude towards dealing with prospective students. WWC members also offer advice to applicants and strive to create a positive im- pression of St. Ignatius in their minds. As presidents of WWC. we. along with the three other co-presidents coordinate the shadow days and launch tours at Open House. Most of the work we do is ’behind the scenes , preparing for the mam events of WWC. Some of the goals of WWC include developing people and public speaking skills, providing students with an opportunity to aide in the ad- missions process and offering students the chance to share personal experiences at St. Ignatius with applicants. WWC hopes to create men and women with and for others through its program of hospitality. -Laura West Co - Presidents: Sydney West. Gabriel Barrios. Peter Quinn WWC Freshman Members 2006-2007 T.j. The intention of the club was to provide support to other students in need of support for cancer related issues. The club began with 10 members and in just one year has grown to be one of the larg- est clubs at SI. In addition to the support component, the CAG does cancer education and fundraisers for cancer related groups. In the fall the CAG participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and held a bake sale which raised $800 for a pediatric cancer fund started by the club. Spring plans include another bake sale, a Pow Wow on Pediatric Cancer, and a project for Locks for Love. Club members along with teachers and other SI students are growing their hair from Jan-June to donate to Locks for Love. A haircutting party in June is the final event for the 2006-2007 school year. Cancer is something that affects most people in some way at some point in their life. The Cancer Awareness Group strives to serve both the SI and the greater community by provid- ing both emotional and financial support for cancer related issues. It is their hope that through educa- tion they can help prevent, treat and maybe one day cure this devastating dis- ease. upper Division Kaly Pizza. Mia Neagle. Erika Brickley. Sophie Btgalke. ASC endeavors to create a “family” environment within the club. ASC members participate in school events like Rose grams and after school socials. Additionally, ASC students perform in the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade, the largest such parade outside of Asia - and it’s televised! Our members give up school nights to prac- tice for the Chinese New Year Parade dances, which they then perform on beautiful floats. Another activity that strengthens our family environment is the recent “hot topic” of our school, the annual International Dragon Boat Races, an event attended by amateur and professional teams who come from as far away as Hong Kong and the Philippines. Sunday mornings leading up to the event means ASC members take to Lake Merced for the grueling Dragon Boat practices. Not only does this event provide fun on the lake and a chance for that desired gold medal, it also gives us the chance to represent proudly our SI student body. Despite being underdogs, the ASC team has brought home bronze and silver medals. Seize the opportunity and come join our family. We look forward to sharing pizza, Twister, Rose grams, parade routines, pnd Dragon Boat paddles with all of, SI. Organizations 1 3 2 1. Monica Joe ‘09. Jane Kim '09. Michelle Aureliano '09. By helping students become involved in life at SI, AAAS shows students that they are not on the outside looking in and can make a difference in what goes on around them. In doing so, AAAS strives to learn and teach the St. Ignatius community about the rich- ness of the African American culture, past and present. The event that AAAS, as well as the school, looks forward to the most, is the Black His- tory Month Assembly. During the month of February we put in a number of hours working on an exciting performance to display the culture of African Americans throughout history to our peers. During the performance, the audience can experience great poetry, dancing, singing and monologues. We pride ourselves in accepting everyone of every race who would like to learn more about African American culture, history and tradition. With the help of our moderators Mr. Delaney and Ms. Tunstall, we plan on having other memorable events this year such as a Freshman Social,, Bowling Nights, Community Service Events, a Christmas Party, a Black History Month Celebration, and involvement in the SI International Food Faire. Music for Others builds community inside SI and beyond, whether in simply bringing together a “cast” of busy students who might not otherwise meet, or in joining together the voices of the audience and [performers in a rousing finale of catchy seasonal tunes. We celebrate! connection between old and new friends alike. The goal of Music For Others reaches deeper, however, as we leave our hectic lives for an afternoon to test our comfort zones, to challenge ourselves to give without counting a cost, and to bask in the joy that a beautiful piece of music can create. Music for Others gives .student musicians a chance to continue and cultivate their, musical talent in a relaxed setting while truly living the words we pray each morning. -Andrea Dillon ’07 Music For Others Club President r ■c 1. With more and more students submitting work, competition for publica- tion gets fiercer, and as the prestige of the magazine grows, so does competition for spots on the highly selective editorial board. Members review hundreds of poems each year before siphoning out the first-rate for inclusion in the magazine, published annually in May. In addition to this main responsibility of the yearly publication, The Quill has in recent years branched out to coordinate live literary events. Notables this year included the YouthSpeaks poetry slam and Si’s own slam, featuring talented student writers and performers. Editors-in-chief, Jessica Rizzo and Cal Trembath even began a new tradition this year for senior members in the way of a literary-themed kickoff soiree at the beginning of the season. Club moderators Ms Purcell, Ms Nickolai, and Mr. Dekker work tirelessly to demand excellence, encourage sensitivity, and arbitrate good taste, respectively. As one of very few platforms from whence student artists have an opportunity to share their work with the larger community, The Quill has permanently garnered a treasured and respected place in the heart of SI. -Jessica Rizzo and Cal Trembath Editors-in-Chief t. Organizations 1 4 5 { Service The Service Club can of- ten be taken for granted at our school, volunteering to work in the back- ground at countless school events. Without fail, the members of the SI community can count on the blue-blazer wearing, patch-donning members of the Service Club to be there at every major school event, ushering and providing assistance. The members of our club make themselves available at a moment’s notice to serve the needs of the school whatever they may be—sell- ing raffle tickets at the Fashion Show, ushering at plays and musicals, and helping out at Community of Concern meet- ings. The application process for potential members of the Service Club is intense, requiring a personal interview and essay combined with a minimum GPA and activities re- quirement. Yet, despite this rather daunting process, Lthe members of the club willingly work and volunteer their time in order to be a part of this club that truly demonstrates being “men and women with and for others”. -Claire Bonelli President with 1. We cover issues from depression to par- tying, and we try to have a pow-wow every month. We discuss and share feelings and thoughts about specific issues of particular relevance to teenagers in a |supportive community atmosphere. We allow student toj hear the experiences of their peers. The monthly pow- wows are held in the Library, where one expert and 3-4 student speakers share information and stories about a certain topic. The mood is set. 24 really re- ally good looking people go into the father’s club room. Their purpose, you may ask? To do government. Most of the time, our work goes unnoticed, but week after week we trek up to the fathers club room to plan out our next big ac- tivity. It probably goes unnoticed because no one knows that we’re meeting, much less where the father’s club room is. Many of you reading this, attended our annual Christmas dance although some probably didn’t because you couldn’t get a ticket. Through the hard work and dedication of the stu- dent council, we were able to sell out the Christmas dance for the first time. The common conception is that student council is responsible for dances and rallies. I am here to put that myth away. We do dances, but we had nothing to do with the rally. I swear to that. We decorate the school and everything, but we also are responsible for the general ambiance of the school. I hope we served you well. -Ramzi Dudum 1. From welcoming orientation to crazy finals, we’ve been through pretty much all of it. It was a hectic year filled with friends trying to open your locker, numerous world history outlines, catching your breath, complaining about sore muscles after P.E., our first Bruce Mahoney, and the special Christmas Dance. The memories of the fun we had before and afer school talking and hanging out in the hallways bring back spe- cial memories and inside jokes into mind now the year is done. The countless hours studying, the challenging sports practices, and the endless list of complaints day after day was hard to juggle all together, but in the end, it was all worth it. The number of new friends we’ve made and struggles we overcame made this past year incompa- rable to anything else. As junior year comes to an end, we reflect on our past years here at SI. We’ve been through the “Freshman, stop blocking the halls! and the ‘‘Silly sophomores, you are still underclassmen! Embracing the intuitive knowledge that accompanies the title of “upperclassmen.” this year we be- gan to understand what past juniors and seniors had experienced. We found ourselves managing the social ideals of freshman year, the academic goals of sophomore year, and the added responsibility of being upperclassmen at SI. We learned how to balance hours of homework and extracurriculars. while maintaining a social life, and we discovered just how many cups of coffee are actually needed to stay awake after 3 hours of sleep. Many times throughout the year, we asked ourselves how we ever thought last year was hard. While many of us, after staring at a schedule filled with 0°. AP class- es, and otherwise demanding courses, began the countdown to summer a few weeks before school started, no member of our junior class can deny polos filled our crowded closets, as responsibility and leadership claimed us as their newest members. Counselor meeting periods became frequent, with surveys conveying possible Colleges and majors. PSAT scores drove many of us to our loca' bookstores to flip through the several 2” thick SAT prep books, only to realize-that the time to start studying would have been 3 months sooner. Like a cherry on top ar already complex-junior sundae, our rigorous college process took full effect. Of course, junior year also came with privileges. We crowded the commons during 5th lunch and went to our first SI prom. We experienced the trauma of having our stomach growl during 4th period and the resulting joy of having only one class after lunch. Our class earned more and more licenses (not to mention tickets for street cleaning), and friendly reminders to “Get Off Your Butt” increased our class involvement. We developed new ways to cope with stress, and. although familiar with so much, faced major adjustments to new SI additions. While coming back from summer, planning to resume that comfortable reclining position with feet resting on the conve- niently-placed basket of the desk in front of us. straight-backed chairs and unstable desks took us by surprise. New dance rules also called attention, and the newly enforced no-eating-in-the-halls rule landed many juniors in detention. As the countdown to the end continues into single digits, we realize that, in less than a few months, we will be seniors. We will no longer be com- pared to the class above us: we will be the class that sets the standard. Like a caterpillar emerging from our junior cocoon, we will become the beautiful butterflies that are SI seniors.
