“iAy caramba! SI students stormed the Stownstown Chevy’s on October 26, 2005 to gorge themselves on chips and salsa. However, in the Christian spirit of generosity, this fantastic feast was for the benefit of others: those affected by Hurricane Katrina. While the 160 mph winds destroyed many homes, businesses, and lives, St. Ignatius roared back with love, prayers, and money. Wildcats always strive for success, but this desire is dramatically intensified when the goal is to help others. The Class of 2006 prevailed in the Penny War, securing the Krispy Kreme doughnut prize, but more importantly, adding a large donation to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The Unity Counsel labored tirelessly to organize fundraisers, including Chevy’s Night and the Hurricane Katrina Bake Sale. This sense of duty to be “men and women for others extends beyond the student body, spreading to the administration, faculty, benefactors, and parents. Brother Draper’s announcement about the Hurricane Katrina drive at Back to School Night prompted many parents to open both their hearts and their wallets. Astonishingly, Campus Ministry raised $50,000 the next morning. SI sent this enormous sum of money to Catholic Charities and Jesuit High School in New Orleans with a pledge to give even more. The administration transformed prayers into actions, offering spaces to students displaced from Jesuit High School in New Orleans. Some students may think that St. Ignatius’ Prayer of Generosity is an archaic holdover from genteel times of past. However, the unselfishness exhibited by the entire community in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina declares otherwise. Whether acknowledged or not. we continue to live St. Ignatius’ vision. We are SI: I proud, triumphant and most importantly, generous beyond all earthly measure. -Jillian Cunningham ‘061 Upper: Students and teachers demonstrated communal support.
