Every year for the Winter Pops Concert the Orchestra and Jazz Band play a great selection of songs. This year we performed parts from Antonin Dvorak’s “From the New World Symphony No. 9, with an introduction similar to the theme song for the film Jaus, “Colonel Bogey March,” the tune to the old camp song (“Comet, it makes your mouth turn green, Comet, it tastes like Listerine”) composed by Kenneth Alford, and select songs from Les Miserables, accompanied by vocal soloists and the combined choirs. In the Jazz Band, we played a variety' of songs including “Peter Gunn , “YMCA by the Village People, “Oye Como Va written by Tito Puente and recorded by Carlos Santana, and “Summertime by George Gershwin. In a smaller group of Jazz Band members, we played a Dixieland-style arrangement of “Sweet Georgia Brown, featuring solos by Chris McGuire, Nick Garcia, and Patrick Dominguez. We always have an opportunity to excel and develop our talents in Orchestra and Jazz Band with Mr. Sablinsky’s guidance. Even with all of the hard work that we put in for those six or seven performances, we have a fun time filled with a lot of memories. - Patrick Dominguez ‘05 (Alto Sax) Symphonic Orchestra Violin, Rchexva Bvmo.
