AJSJight At the Roxbury VJ.UBBIN' IN THE COMMONS Dances here at Saint Ignatius have evolved over the years, and for the most part they have only gotten better, especially for seniors, because after the dances of our freshmen year, they couldn’t have gotten any worse. At our first high school dance in the foil of 2001, Saint Ignatius decided to try several new policies, most memorably: breathalyzers and having every single light in the Commons on high. The memories of our first dance included making our entrances at 7:30 sharp, making sure we had fresh breath, passing through a courtyard that resembled airport security', only to find the Commons as bright as day and filled with twenty people. Then in the middle of our first high school dance, everyone sat down on the floor and chanted, “Turn off the lights! Turn off the lights. The administration heard us yell, but the lights still stayed on. Gio Gallaread '05 Perhaps our cheers haw set in, or perhaps the behavior of the student body has improved, regardless, the lights were given a break when the Commons was turned into “A Night At The Roxbury.” Glow sticks, a movie playing on the wall, and an appearance by several brave seniors in a choreographed dance completed the theme. “One of the the reasons it was so good was because we had a good theme,” said Student Council member Aimee Labagh '05. High Top Posse’s wide variety of music also contributed to the success of the dance, even the teachers look forward to his music. The CDs he handed out were also highly coveted items. They included a wide variety of then-current hits such as “Pieces of Me by Ashlee Simpson and “Goodies” by Ciara. However there were also older songs by artists such as Michael Jackson. The music of the night and CD were both varied, “There was definitely some music that was pretty far out there, said Anna Snyder ’05, “but it was good.” The first dance of the year had high attendance and was a success by all accounts. Its success helped ensure the Unity Council dance, “the OC in the COmmons,” (come reppin’ your favorite California show.) and at the end the first quarter, successful dances at SI are two tor two, but as to whether the “curse of the canceled dances” lives or dies, only time will tell. ETUHN TO BEING WILDCATS The St. Ignatius student docs many things well. From winning a football game to organizing a prayer service, our student body is comprised of competent, enthusiastic individuals. Some may argue this drive towards excellence comes from compulsive over-achievement or a sense of competition, but the true Ignatian knows it is a matter of spirit...more specifically, school spirit. When we are given an entire uwk to express this spirit, the resulting madness heightens the excitement, amplifies the enthusiasm, and builds up the pride surrounding this vibrant community. But what does dressing up in a poodle skirt have to do with winning the Bruce-Mahonev? You ask. The answer is obvious: Spirit Week is the school's way of letting our team know just what crazy things we will do to support them. Painting one’s face blue, donning a leisure suit, slipping into a toga, even wearing parachute pants for an entire day - all examples of SI students proudly demonstrating their inextinguishable school spirit. Halloween Students at SI cannot dress up for Halloween. Some students skirt around this rule by wearing costumes that involve a polo. Sofia Guttierrez-Johnson ‘05, for example, donned festive wings in the spirit of the holiday while not breaking dress code. But some students are still left feeling confused on why SI does not embrace the celebration that causes children so much joy. Mr. Grealish explains that in the past years, when Halloween rolled around the “dress code took a beating.” So far, as long as people have worn their polo with their costume, the administration had turned a ghoulish blind eye. $1 4 Student Li c pll
