Over the past 150 years of S.I.’s existence, thou- sands upon thousands of Wildcats have chanted this simple yet spirited and controversial cheer. What does it mean? As others accuse, is it a mere cry of arrogance, an attempt to belittle our opponents? Or an overflowing of S.I.'s unique spirit and pride? As S.I. ventures into a new millennium, we take the time to reflect upon what S.I. is-the 2,000 plus parts which make up the Wildcats’ anatomy and how they work in con- junction to fuel the school spirit that so clearly rings through this cheer. S.I. is a body with many parts, a body whose inner and outer beauty shines through its every action. The campus is as beautiful as ever. The number of A.P. tests administered is testament to the school’s academic strength. The success of our sports teams and our students’ and faculty’s support of their endeavors has been incredible. The friendships formed and the work done by members of our clubs, C.L.C.’s, and theatrical casts have contributed immensely to the extracur- ricular life of the school. Service to the larger Bay Area com- munity has far exceeded requirements. Faculty-student in- teraction has created a positive learning environment. And the extent and success of our campus ministry program has been crucial to the students’ development as people for oth- ers. Clearly, on the eve of the 21st century, the body which is S.I. is in great shape —it is physically, mentally, and spiri- tually fit. This book has tried to capture the beauty, strength, and grace which the body has demonstrated over the course of this school year. We would like to offer this book both in thanksgiving for all those who have given of themselves to make S.I. what it is today and also as a prayer for the contin- ued well-being of the body of S.I. as it ventures into a new era. We pray that faculty, parents and friends continue to support S.I., that graduates bring the Ignatian spirit with them wherever they may go, and that students continue to cheer with pride: We are S.I. The heart pumps blood throughout the body, blood which provides the sustenance the body needs in order to survive. Without the nutrients that the heart sends to every muscle and organ, the body would become weak. Similarly, Student Life provides the sustenance which S.I. needs in order to survive and be strong. Without campus ministry, dances, plays, retreats, and rallies, the experience of being a student at S.I. would be drastically different. The strength of these programs and events fuels the school pride of S.I. students while also providing them with the opportunity to grow in talents, confidence, and spirituality. Especially this year, the heart’s strength has wonderfully maintained the body’s overall health. Undoubtedly, this magnificent characteristic strength of S.I. will continue far into the future. 12 Student Life opening Student Life opening 13 Spirit Week 14 Spirit Week Spirit Week 15 16 Dances Upper Left: Smile for the camera girls! The amount of clubs here is overwhelming compared to most other schools. Whether it be nationalities, languages, publications, service, academics, religion, or hobbies, 43 opportunities await us in our search to be involved in an activity at our school. Most students, however busy they may be, always seem to find time to include them- selves in multiple clubs. Without these organizations, students would not be as involved in school activities. The stomach is located in the center of the body; the activities that a student is involved in are the core of his or her life. Like the stomach of a wildcat, clubs and organizations make up the basis of our student body, and we are privileged to be offered so many of different interests. St. Ignatius’s organizations make our students thrive and aid in the accomplishment to be men and women for others. 38 Organizations Opening Organizations Opening 39 Michelle Victor, Frank Vcrducci, Scott Karpowicz, Paul Lorentz, Mariesa Duggan, Jim Tassone. It is only fitting that sports be described as the legs of the Wildcats, for they are what move the body and get it in shape physically. In the words of our principal, Mr. Charlie Dullea, “The fields, courts, and pool are classrooms. Coaching is teaching. The values inculcated in the daily work in- volved are beneficial to the formation of these young men and women. The friendships acquired and the sacrifices made can have a lasting impression on the education of our students. Winning and losing are their own rewards. Those who try, share, and partici- pate reap the benefits in other ways outside the ath- letic arena.” 72 Sports opening Sports opening 73 Varsity Football Nicholas Serratto Kelly Turbin Jeremiah Valera “With hard work in the off-season and sheer determination on the field, this great group of guys worked together to form a solid offense and defense. In 1947, Saint Ignatius College Prep, was contacted by a group from Sacred Heart Cathedral interested in commemorating alumni from both schools that fought and lost their lives in World War II. They wanted to make a tro- phy that symbolized the rivalry between Saint Ignatius and Sacred Heart, which is the longest ongo- ing rivalry west of the Mississippi. Saint Ignatius chose Bill Bruce as their honoree. Bruce was a S.I. graduate in the class of 1935. Bruce served as Student Body President, was a star football player for the wildcats, was a mem- ber of the boxing club, and excelled academically. Bill joined the Navy when the war started, and was killed in an airplane crash at the Naval Station in Pasco. Washing- ton on April 4, 1943. Sacred Heart Cathedral chose Jerry Mahoney as their honoree. Mahoney excelled in football and basketball, winning the All-City honors for both sports during his senior year. Mahoney died while aboard the S.S. Denny B. Plant, which was sunk by a German submarine. The rivalry the Bruce-Mahoney trophy represents existed long before the origin of the trophy. This rivalry, which today greatly contributes to the excitement of being a wildcat, began all the at S.I. for t ahoney Trophy way back in 1893. On St. Patrick’s Day of this year, the two school: met at Eighth and Market streets to compete in a rugby game, whicl Sacred Heart won 14-4. Since that day. S.I. and S.I I. have competec in innumerable athletic events. Sinc the origin of the Bruce-Mahoney trophy football, basketball, and baseball hav been the athletic events most eagerlj anticipated by the student IxKlies of eacl school. The winner of two out of three o those games gains control of the Trophy In recent years, gaining control of tht trophy has meant having it kept in £ display case at the winning school foi the following year. And for next year, the trophy wil rightfully rest in the hallways of St Ignatius. Setting out to keep the trophy the athletes, backed by cheerleaders an the whole student body, set out on ; mission to maintain control of this cher ished prize. The exceptional footbal Cats this year began the success of th mission with their 28-22 win over S.H at Kezar stadium October 2, 1999. Then the dynamic basketball team defcatec S.H. 53-43 at U.C.S.F. on January 19. 2000, thus maintaining pos session of the trophy. Baseball has not yet been played, but this yeai the result of that game will not be a factor in the deciding of tin Bruce-Mahoney trophy...S.I. has the Bruce!!! he year 2000 The Backbone of the Wildcats The 140 people who make up the administration and staff here at S.I. are undoubtedly remarkable. They give of their time and talents out of genuine concern for the students here, and this dedication seldom goes unnoticed. As senior Catie Campbell notes, “Teachers here are extremely dedicated because of the amount of work they do outside of the class- room in order to inspire us inside of the classroom.” Teachers come in early and stay late to help students with work. They are active as moderators and coaches. Faculty attend sporting events to cheer on the Wild- cats, and serve as leaders on all retreats. Indeed, the strength and commitment of teachers, counselors, and administrators here is part of what makes the S.I. experience so rewarding and successful. It is only fit- ting, then, to call them the backbone of the Wildcats, for without our outstanding faculty, S.I. would not be nearly as strong as we are today. 158Administration Staff Administration Staff 159 English (from left to right) Front Row: Dennis Redo, S.J., Elizabeth Purcell (chair). That tail helps the wildcat keep it’s balance just as the freshman balance SI. Most coming from schools one-fifth the size, somehow the freshmen have to fit in. Believe it or not everyone starts from the bottom. Sooner than you can image you will be the heads of this school. Time passes so quickly so stop for a split second and try to enjoy your high school life. It could be the best time of your life if you make it that way. When asked about freshmen year, one anonymous freshmen replied, “It’s a big, big world and I’m scared.” Just remember it’s not all that bad but consume as much as possible. Next year when you’re the upper classmen of 4th period lunch, don’t be too mean to the freshman be- cause look at where you are now. 168Frosh Opening Freshmen Class Officers: L-R, Zachs Dizon (Sec. Just beginning to feel comfortable in the vast halls, they have emerged as the mouth of the wildcat. As freshmen, they were not quite able to voice their opinions but have now started to do so. Sophomores have started to feel their feelings matter and so can easily express them. Not suffering from pressures of SAT’s or college applica- tions, they are able to sit back and enjoy their First Fine arts course. As everyone says, they are the rul- ers of fourth period lunch and therefore think they can boss the freshmen around. Remember, though, that next year you sophomores will be once again the youngest at lunch. But remember, too, to have fun and enjoy all that this year offers. As juniors, we are more than half way done with our high school life, yet we still have one more year to go. We cannot slack off as much as the seniors will and we must stay focused on our task. We juniors, though not quite the head, are not the tail either. Next year we return as seniors and we must make our last year at SI the best it can be. Just think-one more chance to prove to everyone we will be the first (and best) class of the new millenium. One more chance to show our SI spirit. One more chance to be true Ignatians. 19« .Junior Opening Junior Class Officers: (L-R) Eddie Korn (Sgt. at Arms), Sunne Smith (Sec- retary-Treasurer), Mariela Lopez (President), John Mission (Vice President) Junior Opening 197 Above: Tim Faye taking a breather after a couple frames and a group of junior girls enjoy staring into the camera. As the leaders, organizers and eldest the seniors have mainly taken the head position in all of Si’s clubs, sports and organizations. College is so close for us, yet how can we leave high school? Our time here has been well spent but where did it all go? It’s just this year that many of us have become so much closer. Throughout our Kairos re- treat, we have bonded with some of our classmates. Is there a member of the class of 2000 that could ac- tually say they know all of our classmates? I don’t think so but at least we were able to get to know a good handful of them. Well, class of2000, welcome to the new millennium. This is your book so enjoy, and just because we are the heads of this school doesn’t mean we have to have big ones. There’s a lot more out there that we still haven’t experienced. So take care and take it all in.
