Four years ago, the Student Body's goal was to increase school spirit. This year’s Student Body — under the leadership of the Cheerleaders and the Rally Committee — has taken this goal far beyond its expectation. Kicking off the year with an awesome rally, perhaps the best ever Spirit Week, and a kooky assortment of ideas (and Cheerleaders), SI spirit is ready for any challenge ! Spirit II Immersion Ireland by Carolyn Lee In June of last summer Angelique D'Angelo, Joe DeBarbric, Carolyn Lee, Lauren MeMonigle, Sara O'Rourke. Brian Schmidt, and Mr. Paul Hanley (pajo) boarded a plane heading for Dublin, Ireland. We departed with three goals in minds. The first being establishing a community among our group. The second was immersing ourselves in the Irish culture. And the third was to help the less fortunate in the community. We successfully achieved all three. We spent the first week of our trip in the Northern cities of Portadown, Belfast, and Derry. After our travels in the North, we returned to Dublin to begin our work at underprivileged camps. The children opened up to us completely. They held nothing back including their love. They were satisfied with a listening car or a friendly face and this is what we provided. We spent our time talking, playing, and listening to stories of their family, friends, and culture. On the weekends, we explored the country past our home in Dublin and traveled to different cities. We left SI as unfamiliar traveling companions and returned close friends. Our Immersion did not end at the return to SFO but continued with our new task of bringing our experiences into the halls of SI. Salinas by Kristy Cahill For two weeks in July, Kristy Cahill, Suzanne Girolami, Melissa Gomez, Megan Montague, Bill Shereer. Mike Vrazasbal, Judy ip and Jim McGarry and Alexis Olian, immersed ourselves in the culture of the Salinas Valley. First we stayed at the Correcn and Gold Inn, our tasks ranged from chopping meat to serving fowl to making our guest feel welcome. During our free time we traveled to a Migrant Dibor Camp where the teenagers, children, and adults opened up their meager homes to welcome us into their community. Next, we helped the UFW fight for better living conditions of the farm workers. Throughout all these new experiences and relationships, we learned to immerse ourselves in a new community and most importantly to form our own community. TllCSOn by Christine- This summer, Whitney Barca. Kari Berquist, Cesar Bucoy, Daniel a Fenili, Christine Olsson, James Shinbori, and Patty Zatkin and Jen Levinson traveled to Tucson. We worked at Casa Maria's serving food to the neighborhood, a battered woman's shelter with kids, and at school of refugees. We also look a trip to Nogales, Sonora, where we learned about maquiladoras and the poverty. We met inspirational people who opened our minds to the different ways people can live and we bonded along the way. 12 Immersion Mississippi by Mari Nakano God grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change, courage to change things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. No fair. Marks, a third world area within America, land of the beautiful. No fair. The small untidy trailer homes often holding eight or more people. No fair. 1'hc deteriorating hopes in the teenage mothers' eyes. No fair. 'Hie drug deals, the killings down the block, the case at which one can acquire marijuana Poor, meagcrly educated children who's dreams reach the heavens. I want to be a basketball player said one boy. Teach me this, teach me that. It wasn't fair to them and it wasn't fair to us. But. the people were beautiful in spirit and soul. We wanted to fix everything but till they asked for were our efforts, our smiles and. most of all. they asked for us to believe in them. We witnessed the richness in the simpler, more worthy things in life - things we often take for granted here at home. Thanks to Marks w e are more open minded, less quick to judge, gracious and appreciative. Participants: Colm Driscoll, Jamie D'Acquisto. Kara Asuncion. Amanda Rcitcrman, Tina Cardenas. Christine Chun, Mari Nakano. leaders: Chris Creswell, Jamie Wong. Host: Joan Dunning. White Mountain- Valerie Barrios, Suzanne Choy, Andrew Duff. Claire Harvey, Lindsey Notario. Jordan Phelps. Nina I-aRosa, Mr. Andrew Dworak and Mrs. Kathy Hanley- boarded a tiny, white S.I. van and anxiously set forth on our long drive to White Mountain. Arizona. We lived together on an Apache Indian Reservation, working with a variety of people while also learning about the Apache way of life. Our Indian guide exposed us to a number of adventures, which included Gcronimo's caves, the Apache wilderness at night, and the top of Ml. Baldy. There were many unforgettable aspects of our trip: the adorable children, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bags of Marslunellow Matey's at the Grand Canyon, the guys cutting down a tree with a car jack. Jordan's sudden interest in photography or just staying up till night talking. Most importantly, however, we will always remember the lessons we learned about ourselves and others that taught us what it truly means to live together as a community. San Francisco by Clarissa Avcndano- We, Mrs. Carolyn Smith, Father Greg Gothals, Michelle Naklowycz, Elaine Sullivan, Hollybcth Vocal, and Clarissa Avendano. lived and worked in the inner city of San Frandsco-thc 1'cnderloin district. We were all skeptical as to what would happen during those two weeks, but our doubt quickly faded as we came in contact with the plethora of beautiful people we encountered in places such as St. Anthony's Dining Room, the Tenderloin Recreation Center, and the Marian Residence for Women. It was difficult for us to witness the tremendous suffering and despair occurring within the people around us. But the people who dedicated their lives to the betterment of the Tenderloin continuously touched and inspired us to work harder. We all became close throughout this experience because we all came to know and understand the world just a little better. We saw that part of society that no one else would ever want to see in their lifetimes. Maybe at first we didn't want to either. But in the end. the Tenderloin became a part of us. And we became a part of them. TIJUANA As we walked across the border of our neighbor to the south, our immersion group did not know what to expect A group with so many different backgrounds--- Aaron. Bridgette. Danny. Geraldine. Kelly. Kerry. Janice. Chris, and Becky was about to tackle a project that would need the utmost since of community Our home for the next two weeks would be Im Casa dt Ims I’obres. the house of the poor. F.vcry morning we woke up and fed the poor of Tijuana in our simple soup kitchens. Slowly but surely our lives became immersed in the culture of Tijuana As the bonds grew with the workers at the house so did the sense of community between each other Wc tackled the tough tasks of feeding the prisoners in the Tijuana jails, visiting the border at night, talking with some of the deportees at another refuge house, and just relating to the youth at our community. This was a very special experience and it was filled w ith memories that will stay with our group for the rest of our lives The question which still arises in all our minds is. who really benefitted from this tnp. the community of Im Casa dt Los P d rts or the nine people w ho were able to experience such a special community? Immersion 13 Egypt by Eric Emstcr For the first and last time this summer. Saint Ignatius sent an Immersion group to Egypt. Elizabeth Cincotta, Colleen Ciaitor, Katherine Giuffre, Ashley Tudor. Erie Emstcr, Edward I)e Asis, and Hubert Ncthcrcott were the proud pioneers of this adventure. For the first three days we saw the sights of Cairo which included the Pyramids of Giza, the Cairo Museum, and the Nile. Then we drove to Alexandria where we worked in a leprosy colony for ten days. Here we worked with some Egyptian college students, and together we helped restore one of the dilapidated buildings of the colony. After Alexandria, we drove to Luxor where we saw many great sights, and we all got diarrhea. Many great friendships were made on the trip, but there were also many confrontations. Through these confrontations our group learned to stick up for ourselves, «and we «also discovered that if we stuck together and suj | orled each other we could survive. Quebec by Theresa Finn Tills past summer, seven people embarked on a new journey to a foreign country for two weeks in Montreal. Canada. Scotty McFrugal Campbell. Theresa T Finn, Molly McCorkTe, Lukey Poo Schwartz, and Forrest Wittiker Wittenmeier accompanied by their leaders Laura bad mom Boniface and Julia good mom Rinaldi were prepared to experience the French- Canadian culture while helping those who were underprivileged. We worked in a soup kitchen called L'Acccuil Bonneau and at night worked serving homeless teenagers from a winnebago. Our trip was truly unique and left us with super memories of the fun we had and the different people we encountered. We arc so grateful for this unforgettable experience and for the priceless friendships we developed .dong the way. I.OS ANGELES Despite incessant gunfire, daily muggings, and multiple gang wars, the Los Angeles Immersion group managed to extract a positive experience from our two week stay. Actually Mark DeVoto. Brendan Graham. Michaela Lee. Keiko Nakai, Erin O’Brien. Karen Sui, and Michael Shaughnessy had a tremendous time and we were lucky not to experience any of the aforementioned incidents. The six of us spent one week at All People’s Christian Center in Central Los Angeles, and the next at Delores Mission School in East Los Angeles. Our tasks included playing with Spanish speaking preschoolers, tutoring elementary school kids, talking with teen gang members, making food for the homeless, and eating dinner with senior citizens. From young to old. we certainly had a full range of activities. II limiiiT ioii El Salvador By: Shannon Cadagan This summer Scott Bruni, Karin Erkkila, Chris Murphy, Regina Sheridan, Clark Stephens, Ryan Wagner, and myself (Shannon Cadagan) spent two weeks in El Salvador. We spent the first part of our trip in the capital of San Salvador. We met women organizations and youth groups, visited Romeros Tomb, where he was shot, and the UCA. where the Jesuit martyrs were killed. We proceeded to Las Vucltas. a small village in the countryside, where we spent time with the people. We played with the children, met with teachers, and played soccer and softball with the village teams. Our next slop was Guarjila, a slightly larger village. We stayed with families and got a feel for every day life, from working in the fields or going to the city to attend school. It was a trip we’ll never forget and are very grateful for being given the opportunity for this experience. Guaymas 1 by Karen Valter litis summer Rachel Bog, On Kenny, Tony Luini. Brendan Wells, and I had the experience of living in Guaymas, Mexico for two spectacular weeks with our leaders Tim Daniels and Sile Dooley. We found Guaymas to be a neat place, filled with many passionate, caring, and energetic people who were always ready to make us feel right at home. Each day we served meals in the Meson, the local soup kitchen, delivered food to the satellite homes throughout the city, little (xld jobs, and our favorite, playing with the children of Jerry's Club or Micrahondas and even teaching a few English classes. We were able to slow down the pace of our everyday lives and enjoyed the simple things. We will cherish the memories, experiences, and the people we grew to love, and their places in our hearts will be alive forever. Guaymas 2 by Jason This past July, Dave Giarruso, Ben Arons, Nocllc Arroyo, Colin Guheen, Jill 1 lerschlcb. Euric Kim, Angela Lcus, Lisa Medina, Jason L'rbiztondo, :uul Patty Wellman lived at the Casa Franciscana in Guaymas. Mexico. We, as a group, learned the true meaning of solidarity through our extensive work at Id Meson (soup kitchen). Jerry's Club (a center for children), and Microondas ( a site where we built a swingset for children). These children were our inspiration who touched our hearts the most with their carefree and fun-loving disposition. While we immersed within a culture unfamiliar to that of our own, our Immersion group found a sense of camaraderie amongst ourselves and those around us. It was this community that helped us learn the true meaning of simple living . Through all these experiences, the ten of us formed new and lasting friendships and returned home feeling grateful for all that we have. Guatemala Immersion - By Molly Kirk Claudia Allwood, Monica Cardona, Greg Chiarclla, Molly Devitt, Siobhan Harrington. Tom Kcrblcski. Peg Beasley, Martina Miller and I went to Guatemala for our two week long faith tour. During our Immersion we learned about the injustices the people have endured throughout the years. We also have witnessed the poverty the majority of the people live in everyday. We met leaders of the community who were fighting for their rights and wording towards equality and justice throughout Guatemala. Every time we saw a tragic situation, there was someone trying to make it better. We discovered that there is no such thing as a hopeless cause in Guatemala. Though our original mission was to help the people in Guatemala, die people we met helped us far more than we could help them. We learned from their endless hospitality, undying love for family, friends, and neighbors, and intense passion for life: and these arc the lesson we will carry with us always. The SI Service Club has been established to provide a manifestation of the persons for others” ideal. Although every student attends SI with this goal in mind, the institution has recognized that example inspires. The Service Club furnishes the school with a backbone, a concentration of students recognized as persons for others by ushering at SI performing arts productions. Open Houses, the baccalaureate Mass, the graduation ceremony, and other school events. President Valeric Barrios describes the 1997-98 Service Club as culturally and ethnically diverse as well as rapidly expanding: the 64- member roster is the largest SI has seen yet. WWC 45 Government Imagine 30 high school students talking about the problems they have with their school...typical, right? Now imagine 30 students working tirelessly to make sure these problems are solved. It may not sound like the usual high school stereotype but that is exactly what Student Government is all about. By meeting every week, discussing various school issues, and proposing new ideas. Student Council members strive for a successful year. And. as emphasized before, a successful year not only depends on the leadership of Student Government but also on the leadership of every student at SI. With its goals of supporting spiritual growth, encouraging service, instilling community, and building awareness, this organization has attracted both students and faculty to the rewards of working towards these goals. Every CLC is special, in that each one consists of a unique group of people that share similar ideals, values, and interests. Along the way, friendships develop within each CLC that provide partners in prayer and sources of strength for every member and moderator. The CLCs have sponsored several important events this past year. The annual Food Drive enabled various groups of students to come together and give back to the community during the holiday season. Thanks to the sold- out success of the Christmas Dance on December 12, CLCs were able to buy even more food and children’s gifts. Furthermore, to encourage awareness, the CLCs also organized Solidarity Dinners, educating others about the various places Immersion groups had visited. Yet, with all this work concerning surrounding areas and places all over the world, Christian Life Communities have remained strong and continue beimj significant influences w w w on the everyday lives of students at SI. 62 CLC Guay mas AMERICA WEST Noelle Arroyo, Colin Guheen, Jill Herschleb, Eurie Kim, Angela Leus, Lisa Medina, Jason Ur- biztondo, Patty Wellman. In front of me there is 42 much more important reasons why I play football at SI. If there could be a great teacher that was not a person, that teacheer would be FOOTBALL. Football taught me responsibility, dedication, and commitmant. A varsity player proudly dedicates 23 hours every week, during the season, to football. I have learned that hard work does pay off in chalk talk, in practice, and in the weight room. I have learned how to respond to a win. A time to clebrate but also a time to know that there is room for improvement. More importantly 1 have learned how to respond to the pain of a loss. In the locker room--aftcr agame in which you poured your heart out onto the field, but came up short-is where you know there is love. You see the hurt on the face of your fellow teamates and friends, and you hug him, not only because lie’s hurting, but because you feel the same way. After a lose you know how much it hurts to lose, but you also know that their is no place that you’d rather be than suffereing with those men. The tine test of the strength of our team came in those times. I couldn’t be more proud of the strength our team showed. I leave you with this quote from the first page of this past season’s Football Playbook: “Teamwork is the fuel that enables common people to achieve extraordinary goals.” -Lionel Metz Chan, Dcvora, Valera, San Juan, R. And the Sunset stretch is just the beginning of their intervals and 6 mile runs to the polo fields and Ocean Beach. This year, the Cross-Country team faced the obstacle of loosing 4 seniors from the 1996 season. The team members had to work extremely hard to compensate for that loss - and they definitely stepped up to the challenge. The 1997 season was a transition year. With a team composed of 4 seniors and 4 sophomores, the two classes had newly defined roles. While Seniors Matt Chen. Brendan Wells. Luke Swartz, and Mike Nowak had to take on leadership of the team, the sophomores got their first experience of the intensity of varsity races. The runners have to watch what they eat even on the day before the event. On race day, the team meets at St. Ignatius and takes a van to the race. They continue their team unity at the race by stretching and praying together before it starts. Boys’ Varsity Cross-Country Captain Matt Chen joined the team four years ago as a Freshman because he knew that running was an important part of his life and today lie’s appreciative of the experience he has gained. With four CCS championships under their belt and a fifth one this year, the Girls’ Cross- Country team is perhaps one of the he most winning teams to every compete here at SI. The Cross Country Cats entered the GPSL with no serious threat, winning the league with their seven runners finishing in the top eight overall. The CCS meet brought greater competition with Lcland and Gunn, but, once again, the Cats were able to clench the Central Coast Section title. Senior Katie Appenrodt dominated both meets, coming in first at both the GPSL and CCS championships. And what docs it take to be champs five years in a row? Awesome coaching, challenging practices, and an overall team spirit Mr. Yap, along with Mr. Gilson, S.J., has worked with these girls since June 14 to build up their sclf- conficdcncc and simply get them back into competition form. Practices, including ten-mile runs to WEstlakc and training for a week in Tahoe, has given these girls the drive to contend for a state championship. And, with five sophomores, four juniors, and three seniors, one would think the Cross-Country Cats don’t have much in common at all, but through hard work and determination, this team has definitely developed a sense of camaraderie and friendship. Seniors Katie Appenrodt, Monica Cardona, and Colleen Cotter have left their marks as talented SI runners. J Girls Cross Counlrv 93 Varsity Boys Water Polo Vaisity Water polo Captain Jaime Lynch believes that, Water polo requires a perfect balance between intellect and athleticism.” In 1994. St. Ignatius established its first Boys’ Water polo team. Today, members of that original team look back upon the last three years with great pride. Seniors Pat Gargan, Jaime Lynch, and Chris Roth remember attending a meeting during Freshman year and meeting future Water polo Cats as the turnout was large enough to create the First Boys’ Water polo team. But because Water polo is usually not a grammar school sport, the players had very little or no experience and a great deal to learn. Thus, in its first year, the team committed itself to studying the basics. Although the first year was tough, the Water polo Cats made a statement by becoming not only the First team at St. Ignatius, but the first Boys’ Water polo team in San Francisco. The team, joined in 1995 by then Sophomore Marty O’Leary, has improved each year and is becoming more competitive in the league. This year, the players focusc'1 on bringing their individual talents together as a whole and operating as a team. Competition in the league was tough, but the team definitely stepped up to the challenge and is on par with the rest of the league. Coach Russ Stryker has seen the Boys’ Varsity Water polo team’s improvement: “It took some time, but this team is really starting to work hard and understand their roles. It’s nice to see them come together as a team.” Dan Ashley. Stephen Beck. Tom Blake, Dan Figoni, Patrick Gargan. Albert Lee, Dave Lohrcy. Jamie Lynch, Mike Mahoney, Martin O'Leary. Eric Pan. This year the St. Ignatius water polo team transformed from girls to water polo players. The water polo girl’s approached their season with tremendous school spirit and devotion to the team. They worked hard to share their spirit and devotion with the rest of the school. Four years ago the most common reaction to women’s water polo was “we have a water polo team?” Today women’s water polo is met with a full and avid cheering section at home and away games. Our cheers arc led by our most faithful supporter Chris Perez. The program started by a few gawky, uncoordinated, drowning freshmen, but by this year, they graduate as brave competitors. This year, the Volleyball team took an active role in promoting their fast-paced and high intensity sport. The unique characteristic of the 1997 team was the high level of enthusiasm and energy the players brought to their practices and games. This season’s highlight was their game against Sacred Heart Cathedral. The fan attendance was large enough to roll out bleachers on both sides of the court. And the Volleyball team was thrilled to pump up the crowd by tossing miniature vollcyballs to their fans. High School Sports Focus, a local T.V. program dedicated to high school athletics here in the Bay Area, brought their cameras to S.I. to take part in the action. Although it was a close loss, the Volleyball Cats believe that the Sacred Heart game symbolized their improvement this year. The Girls’ Volleyball team faced the challenge of maintaining team unity, but through inner strength, the team members contributed to overcoming that obstacle. Because of that experience, the players became more than just teammates, they became friends. And that friendship is demonstrated on the court by their strong teamwork. Captain Mimi Mulhern expressed her faith in this year's Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team: The season began tough, but in the end we came out on top. But to walk into Si’s Druckcr Court and see every single seat taken by a Wildcat fan is a matter of pride. It is the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team that evokes this feeling in ail who watch them. Their unbelievable talent and teamwork arc no doubt inspiring, but the dedication and discipline they possess are simply above and beyond. With the departure of 8 seniors from last year's team, the '97-'98 Basketball Cats had begun their year with a new set of faces. Many fans speculated how well they would do. But with the motivation and guidance of coaches. especially Head Coach Don Lippi, the '97-'98 Boys' Varsity Basketball Team showed everyone that desire, hard work, and commitment could bring this team success. The Basketball Cats began their preseason in Reno, beating one of the best high school teams in Nevada. Next came the Jesuit Tournament in Sacramento, where SI finished as the consolation champions. At the end of the prescason. the team traveled to Alaska for another tournament and returned as champions. With all these victories, the Cats were ready to face the regular season. The victories at both the Brucc-Mahoncy and the Jungle Game were major highlights for the Wildcats. The team has also managed to remain in either first or second place in WCAL. with Bcllarminc being their most challenging rivals. The Basketball Cats look forward to competing in he CCS playoffs, and put no limit on how high they set their goals. Throughout the season, the team has grown as both a competitive group of basketball players and a closely-knit group of friends. The selfless effort they give to both coaches and players exemplifies the importance they place on both relationships. The Wildcat spirit can be seen on every team member's face, both on and off the court, and it is with these faces that the Boys' Varsity Basketball Team looks ahead to a winning season. With 4 players out with injuries and only 9 players left to play, competitors will vouch that the SI Girls’ Basketball Team is tough, and fans will agree that they work hard. Despite some setbacks, the team is determined to perform at their highest abilities and is willing to give 200% of their effort to the sport. Every team member, injured or not. continues training at practice, concentrating at games, and reaching for a great end to the '97-’98 season. All this perseverance has paid off. So far. the Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team’s greatest win this season was over Sacred Heart Prep, a team that SI Girls' Basketball has not beaten ever since SI became coed. With the final score leaving Sacred Heart Prep 25 points behind, the Basketball Cats faced their next big game -- the Bruce Mahoney -- with confidence and pride. This conviction helped the girls win the game and added to their drive. At this time, they stand in first place and have no intention of letting down. When a team is unified, it becomes easier to find success. The Girls’ Basketball Team is no exception to this fact. These girls are not only great competitors, but also great friends. By belonging to such a tight-knit team, each player is pushed to give that 200%. With supportive coaches and 4 experienced seniors, this team has the guidance for success, the leadership for inspiration, and the determination for a championship title. As a team, they understand the importance of discipline and training, but as friends, they know how to enjoy the sport, have fun...and bowl. It is a simple tradition. Yet it is in this tradition that the Soccer Cats see the most important aspect of their team come alive — the unity that brings them together for every practice, competition, and challenge they face. And this team has faced challenges. With a majority of Varsity having left last year as seniors, this year’s team understood that “rebuilding would be a major focus for the season. But the Boys' Varsity Soccer Team has respectively proven themselves as a group that will not let hard work weaken their motivation or energy,. Through sprinting across West Sunset, trudging through drizzles and rains, and pushing themselves during infamous Beach practices,” the Soccer Cats have developed a fighting spirit and a determination that show in the way they play every game. With weather permitting, the Cats have faced several teams in competition. Their biggest win was in preseason, against one of the best teams in the Bay Area -- Half Moon Bay. With that fighting spirit and determination, the Cats came out with a victory and a great accomplishment. In WCAL, SI holds third place, and as the season proceeeds, the Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team continues working hard to keep up that motivation and energy. Although a new team, these players have pushed themselves, challenged themselves, and committed themselves -- together. By being more bonded, the Soccer Cats are not only developing the skills needed to compete, but also the good times needed to build the spirit for competition. In the literal sense, the Soccer Cats have had to deal with the heavy winter storms plaguing the Bay Area. For a good portion of their season, the Soccer Cats' West Sunset and other competitors’ home fields have been left extremely wet and muddy from the heavy rain. This has led to both players and coaches hoping for better weather, as they continue practicing for competition. In a figurative sense, the soccer Cats have emerged as one of the best teams in the GPSL. Among all in the league, their number one rival appears to be Notre Dame, Belmont, and although losing to them 1-0 and 2-1. the Girls Soccer Cats expect to meet them in the championships for a challenging game. The Girls’ Soccer Team has faced this season with both a fighting and fun- loving spirit. Tough sprints, long-distance running, and exhausting scrimmages have instilled both the tenacity and the stamina required to rise to the top. This fighting spirit infused early helped the Girls Soccer Cats reach the finals in the Sequoia Tournament. Although losing to Woodside High School, the Cats knew they played with 110% of their effort and drive. And with all this concentration, the team still finds time for fun. With one of the senior captains nicknamed “Chuck.” a missing-in-action” goalie coach still left to be found at practice, and the tradition of pants-ing” any unsuspecting team member, the Girls’ Varsity Soccer Cats know how to play hard and play fun. giving them the sting to become great winners and the spark to remain even greater friends. It is a sport where giving 100% is a bare minimum. Crew is a sport that demands complete focus and concentration. And, with ail this in mind, SI Men’s Crew has surpassed these challenges to gain a national title. The Cats finished last year with a tremendous accomplishment -- winning the National Juniors' Rowing Title in Cincinnati. This year, they look towards that same goal with strong focus. Along with hard work and extreme determination. Men’s Crew sees their final race in England, at the International Juniors' Rowing Regatta. Until then, the Marin Rowing Association continues to be Si's greatest rival. The team will meet them at the Battle of the Bay. an annual regatta that includes Marin, Berkeley High School, and Oakland Strokes. After that, a trip to the San Diego Crew Classic will challenge Si's team with crews from all over California, and some from across the country. At the end of the season, the California Junior Rowing Championships, or “CJs, becomes the main focus of every rower, coxswain, and coach. With 3 eights and several fours, the SI Men's Crew Team is busy making sure that each boat is fit and ready for competition -- 5- mile runs. 2.000-meter erg tests, and 90-minute pieces make sure of that. The '96-‘97 SI Women’s Crew also made a contribution to the record books by winning the California Junior Rowing Championships’ Team Trophy. With this great accomplishment, the Crew Cats are eager to begin the '97-‘98 season with the ambition it takes to be number one, and as a team known for their collection of CJ titles, being number one is not just a goal, but a standard. Marin Rowing Association and Capital Crew are Si’s greatest rivals. The Cats will meet these rowing clubs in the Battle of the Bay, the San Diego Crew Classic, and CJs at the end of the year. Another notable race for SI Crew is the annual Kayle-Downey Regatta, in which SI challenges Serra-Notre Dame for possession of the Kayle-Downey Trophy. Teamwork is an important objective for the team this year. With 10 seniors, 10 juniors, and 10 sophomores, these girls understand the significance of “breaking down the barriers” between the different classes and coming together to be one team, one crew. With this unity, the girls train for 5 to 6 months, continually striving for perfection both in and out of the boat. Discipline is another key throughout the season. With morning, afternoon, and weekend practices, and school work in between, members of SI Women's Crew have learned that in order to put in the time and effort required of crew athlete, one must love what they’re doing. With the drive and determination witnessed by many at SI. the Women’s Crew Team definitely loves rowing, and the challenges that come with it. Senior Rowers: Michelle Devincenzi. Siobhan Harrington. Wrestling is certainly one of the more difficult sports offered, due to the frequent and rigorous nature of team practices, the strict weight regimen, and the lack of participation that has plagued the team during its history — at one point, it consisted of no more than four varsity members! The last two years, however, have brought the team a welcome boost in membership, due to the increased publicity at school rallies and within the general school community. The varsity squad currently boasts the talents of captains and four-year veterans Leon Bonney and Kurt Van Sciver as well as seniors Mike Lee, Chad Trainer. Marlon Flores. Alex Lee, Xoel Quinonez, and juniors Terry Uyeba and John Willenborg. It has enjoyed an extremely successful season: Terry Uyega’s victory at the Oakland Tournament February I is only one of many for the team, including Leon Bonney s of the San Ramon Tournament in January and his placement of second at the San Francisco State Christmas Tournament. As a whole, the SI Wrestlers came together to beat Sacred Heart Cathedral February 7. another element to out notorious Bruce Mahoney rivalry, and since the Cats lost to the Irish two years ago at that same tourney. BeatS.H.r Alumni, some young and some old, fill up the remaining stands. Parents proudly wear their St. Ignatius jerseys and sweatshirts. The whistle blows, and the game begins. In 1947, St. Ignatius was contacted by a group from Sacred Heart Cathedral interested in establishing a trophy to commemorate alumni from the two schools who had lost their lives in World War II along with the historical rivalry between S.I. and S.H.. Each school formed a committee to select who the trophy would honor. St. Ignatius chose Bill Bruce (S.I. 1935). Bruce served as S.I. Student Body President, demonstrated remarkable skills as a football player and member of the boxing club and excelled academically. Father Carlin, whom the Carlin Commons is named after, was a classmate of Bruce. Bill Bruce joined the Navy when .the war started and on April 14, 1943 was killed in an airplane crash at the Naval Air Station in Pasco, Washington. Sacred Heart Cathedral chose Jerry Mahoney (S.H. 1944). Mahoney was an excellent football and basketball player. He won All-City honors during his senior year in the two sports. After graduating from S.H., Mahoney joined the war effort and was placed aboard the S.S. Denny B. Plant. A German submarine sunk the ship. World War II left a strong impact on the S.I. and S.H. communities. Ninety-six St. Ignatius graduates died in World War II, and the Bruce-Mahoney trophy serves as a remembrance of their sacrifices. Even in 1947, the S.I. and S.H. rivalry was a part of San Francisco as it had been ongoing for fifty-four years. In 1893, when most of the San Francisco schools today were not yet established, S.I. and S.H. began the oldest athletic rivalry west of the Mississippi River when the twc schools competed against each other in a Rugby game on St. Patrick’s Day 1893. The teams met in Central Park at Eighth and Market streets. Although Sacred Heart won the game, 14-4, this first game was just the start of competition between S.I. and S.H. in many sports in ‘three consecutive athletic leagues. The Bruce- Mahoney trophy is awarded to the school who wins two out of three of the largest spectator sports each year: football, basketball, and baseball. (Only the first league game is counted in basketball and baseball, . where the schools play more than one game.) There are two figurines from each sport on the immense trophy. The catcher is the oldest piece, however none of the figurines are the originals, which have all been broken. In recent years, the trophy has been transported to or kept at a school after it wins the second game. But during the first 10- 15 years, the victorious school would claim the trophy at the end of the year during the ‘Trophy Dance,” a semi-formal affair at the Palace Hotel. St. Ignatius traditionally dominates in football with basketball being a toss-up. But during the last four years, the Bruce-Mahoney trophy has come down to the baseball We’ 11 Fight For St. Ignatius High Faculty 160 Administration Staff Administration Staff 161 RELIGIOUS STUDIES Jim McGarry Mary Ahlhach Julie Ferrari John Galvan, S.J. As urban art developed from the primitive styles of the late seventies to the complex murals of the present, more and more people have tries to stop it. There's a lot of anger towards writers that keep artists from truly going anywhere, and and it all falls into the big struggle between the rich and the poor. The ignoranccof the upper class destroys artists, by bringing down the heat, wiping out anything and everything we do. and by talking down to piccers as if we were the ignorant ones. They ;anel all of us as vandals and taggers. I am not a tagger. Taggers arc destructive. I am an artist, and the world is my canvas. I try hard to stand up for writers ad educate others, but it all depends on how open others are Graffiti has defined me -- making a strong statement that is not necessarily the loudest The only advice that I can give is to always be open, and that we have no time to hate. For the past two years the yearbook has taught-me many things. I have learned to handle pressure and I’ve realized that flipping out solves nothing. Talcing 264 pages and turning them into a book that people are going to want to look at is a tough job. People are very critical and I want to make sure that I reach everyone's standards, including my own. The yearbook has taught me to make goals, but more importantly it has taught me how to meet them. I'd like to say that I'm a better person because of it, but who knows. All I can say it that I have never worked harder on anything. I hope you enjoy it. -Courtney Tarantino If you ever walk down to either the Wiegand or Bannan Theater, mosty likely you’ll find me talking to myself onstage; however, there is a reason for this madness. As an actor I have partiepated in drama at Si for the past four years, in both the plays and the musicals.dedicating much of my time and effort to the shows. Most people only see the finished product.that being the pcrformanccs.but this glamoufin reality only comes from hard work and long hours in rchearsals.going over songs and scenes more than a dozen times in one night to perfect each moment. The theater has allowed me to work with fascinating actors and directors in San Fracnsico.Ncw York. Los Angeles and recently a national fine arts competition in Miami.
