LOS ANGELES Riquclcn Manlucu, Jason Talvcra, Denis Scott. Mr. Dave Mczzcra and Denise Soo Hoo performed services ranging from the Lord's Kitchen to the Dolores Mission School to the All Peoples Christian Center Tutorial Program during a two week period in L.A. After reflecting on the unforgettable experience, we have definitely lived out the full immersion process -Denise Soo Hoo GUAYMAS They travelled to Guaymas. Mexico, where they spent mornings helping at a soup kitchen called the Meson (Meson means the extended table of Jesus). After an afternoon siesta, they played with neighborhood children at Jerry’s Club, an afterschool center where kids can go to study and to play safely. TUCSON This summer, our group—Sam Essex, Matt Lee. Sarah Rodrigues. Lely Sauccdo. Tina Valle, and Betsy Womcr-iravelled to Tucson. Arizona for our Immersion experience. Guided by Kathy Purcell and Liz and Craig Swarthout. we worked for two weeks in various service-oriented programs. Our days were filled with a variety of tasks, such as: renovating low-income housing, cooking and serving dinner at a halfway house, serving and preparing meals at a Catholic Worker soup kitchen, and spending time with children in a shelter for battered women and children. A two-day trip to Nogales. Arizona and Nogales. Sonora opened our eyes to the issues and difficulties facing the people who live on the turbulent Mexico- United Stales border. Not only did we meet many inspirational people outside of our group, but we also made strong ties within our small cluster. Every aspect of the trip contributed to the wonderful experience we all had. GUATEMALA The Guatemala group studied Spanish in the morn- ings and completed projects in the afternoons. In rural communities, they built ovens and latrines. One week- end, they visited a village in which women worked in a sewing cooperative. Immersion 13
