SALINAS This summer, our Immersion group: Danielle Dckkcr. Kim Cadagan. Brian Philips, Michelle Giuffre, Roseanne Sullivan, and our moderator Ms. Alexander lived and worked in the Salinas Valley of California. Within our two week stay in July we lived and worked for and with the people of Salinas. We worked in a soup kitchen, were counselors at a camp for the children of migrant workers, did some farm work ourselves at 5:30AM and met many extraordinary people and shared experiences which we will remember forever. The friendships we made were not just within our group, but with the people of Salinas will last a long time. GUAYMAS This summer, we, Gina Azzolino. Rory Carroll. Patrick Cody. Angela Corridan. Rebecca Rothman, and Dominic Yu. along with our leaders. Shel and Patty Zatkin and their children. Danny and Jane, spent two unforgettable weeks in Guaymas. Mexico. During the day. we worked at the local soup kitchen, the Meson, and delivered food to the neighboring town of Fatima. During the afternoons and evenings, we spent time at Jerry’s Club, a place for all the local kids to hang out. Each new day brought a completely unique experience for us as we continued to meet people and witness many different and exciting aspects of the Guaymas culture. Our immersion has been an experience that has taught us and touched our lives in ways that we will never forget. S.F. IMMERSIONS This summer Jill Anderson. Catherine Lc. Melissa Marie. Katie Schlageter and Zoe Sternberg, along with SI faculty members. Carol Quattrin and Teresa Garrett spent two weeks living at St. Peter's convent in the Mission district of San Francisco to experience life in the inner city. Each day we journeyed to the Tenderloin district to work at St. Anthony’s facilities. These included the dining hall, clothing distribution center and women’s shelter. Because of our experience we made life-lasting friendships and gained a new perspective and attitude toward those in the poverty cycle. Our first hand exposure to poverty broke down our prejudices and fears toward those who arc less fortunate and made us appreciate the things with which we arc blessed. Although we served the community for those two weeks. I often question whether we gave even close to what we received. -Zoc Sternberg MARKS. MISSISSIPPI The participants of the first Immersion trip to Marks. Mississippi were Wendy Albovias. Erin Bianchi. Caroline Cincotta. Carla Madrigal. Allison Silvestri. Jamie Wong, and Mr. Michael Shaughncssy. For two weeks, we got to experi- ence a pan of American culture quite different from our own. We saw and experienced the life in a small, rural town in the south. During our stay, we worked with 3-5 year old children at the San Martin Preschool and with the youth and elderly at the DePorres Delta Ministries Social Services. Our trip to Mississippi has made a lasting impact on our lives. We will never forget the people who have so little and gave so much. Our trip to Marks will remain with us forever. -Jamie Wong Immersion 11

Immersion WHITE MOUNTAIN APACHE RESERVATION During the first two weeks in June, the White Mountain Immersion ‘95 group embarked on an adventure they w ill never forget. The group consisted of Mr. Stephen Carroll. David Bowc. Kathleen Hogan. Michelle Los Banos. Katie Morangc. Leon Ryan, and Kenji Yamada. Within a matter of two weeks we helped build authentic wikiups (huts made of bear grass), w hich arc used to educate visitors to the reservation of what Apache villages looked like. We also built dams that will give the Apache trout a place to repopulate. But most importantly, we learned about a culture that retains the majesty and beauty of ceremonies that were performed long before America was discovered. IRELAND This past summer Erin Camarena, Christine Caurant, Cecily Clements, Robert Forrest. Courtney Lynch. Nicole Monfrcdini, Lisa Monfredini. Brendan Wagner, Sarah Warren. Father Dave Robinson. Sarah Hanley, and Mr. Hanley all lived together for one month in Dublin. Ireland. The twelve of us spent the month working in the summer projects and learning how to live in community. More importantly, we experienced a culture entirely different from our own. and learned from small children how to appreciate life and w hat it offers. The immersion experience is as indescribable as it is valuable, and is something I w ill never forget. -Cecily Clements 10 Immersion

EL SALVADOR This summer, the seven of us: Dan Reid. Jessica Stanfill. Dave Tudor, Jamie Chavez, Eric Berquist, John Sliegeler and Alexis Olian, spent two and a half weeks in El Salvador. One week was spent in the capital city, where we attended many presentations and meetings. The other week was spent in Las Vueltas. While in the village we planted a garden, milked cows, cooked, taught English, and played with the children. The residents of Las Vueltas taught us more than we could ever have learned in a classroom. We encountered people and events that we will never forget. -Dan Reid SAN FRANCISCO IMMERSION ff We, Angela Barisone, Jennifer MacNaughton, Petros Minasi, Virginia Smith. Edward van Brusselen. and Br. Jim Saunders spent two weeks working first hand with the homeless of San Francisco at St. Anthony’s Dining Room, Women’s Shelter, and the Madonna Residence. Within this time we also cooked dinner at the Joaquin Shelter and helped at the Most Holy redeemer hospice. This experience is one which we will cherish forever for we have learned a great deal about others and our com- munity. -Petros Minasi, Jr. TIJUANA, MEXICO On June 5. 1995 Juliet Chiarella. Kirsten Filak. Conor Inteman. Kimiko Nakai. Norma Perez, and directors Chi Ngo. Kathleen Rooney. And Joe DuBey embarked on their immersion to Tijuana. Mexico.
