Opening 1 Administration 17 Seniors 31 Juniors 59 Sophomores 73 Freshmen 87 Sports 101 Activities 145 The Purpose of S.I. rhe purpose of Saint Ignatius College Preparato- ry is threefold. It provides an environment in which young men are assisted in understanding them- selves, Christ, and the world around them. It de- velops a concern in our students not so much for material gains, hut for the mission of Jesus Christ. It develops educated Chris- tian leaders for society. Saint Ignatius College Preparatory Two Thousand-One Thirty-Seventh Avenue San Francisco, California Opening Title Page St. Ignatius is success Qi uccess at St. Ignatius is like the Roman god Janus: it looks both ways. Acknowledging its debt to the past, it prepares for its crucial responsibilities in the future. But. this vision is not pagan. The Ig- nat ian vision of success is rooted in a passion for service: amidst change to enflesh the abiding love of God. Fr. John Murphy, S. J. Top: Fr. Sauer preapres to begin the FML. Theme Success 5 St. Ignatius shows confidence o say that an S.I grad is a man who is “confident does not mean that he is cocky”- a know-it-all. who is totally self-suffi- cient and doesn't need anybody. Rather, he is a preson whose strength lies in that he is trusting. Because he puts his trust in God and the peo- ple he loves, he is truly confident and can therefore face any situation that arises without undue anxiety and fear. Fr. Mario Prictto S. J. Principal Top: Mr. Baumann entertains the stu- dent body during the rally. Right: The cheering section glows with color at the South San Francisco game. The Holy Spirit has been with S. .for 131 years, from Accolti and Maradci, to Sauer and Prietto. Jesu- its. benefactors, women and men of faculty and staff have been sisters and brothers which last word is most- ly “others. Never have there been only words among them, but actions, events, results aided always by untir- ing efforts from the Ignatian Guide and Fathers’ Club. Mr. J.B. Witness countless ac- complishments in vocations to religious life, liturgy, CSF. Speech and Debate, drama. Community Service, sports and alumni contribution to Jesuits, educators. Governors, Mayors, Civil Servants, coaches in pro. College. High School Sports, and alumni teachers and father of S.I. students. And so this is what S.l. tradition seems to be to me, J.B. Mr. S.I. In the opening game of the 86 W.C.A.L. season, the Cats overwhelmingly defeated long time rival Sacred Heart 35 to 6, completing the first step in S.I.’s quest to recapture the Bruce-Mahoney Trophy. After frustrating losses to Serra and Bellarminc, the Wildcats came back the following week to defeat Mitty. Then, after a loss to St. Francis, S.l. closed out their season by defeating Riordan 6 to 0. win- ning the Doc-Krskine Trophy for the fourth consecu- tive year. 102 Sports Varsity football (Firs row Hazcn. Football JV year is a year of transition: from boys to young men ... from immaturity to responsibility ... from selfish wants to the realization that anything worth having re- quires effort. In that light, the 1986 Junior Varsity has been a very successful group of young men. Despite several injuries throughout the course of the season, we never let down or hung our heads. Early difficulties helped to build character and certain invididuals helped to bring out the maturity in the other players. By the end of the year, we were playing well individually and as a unit. We peaked at mid-season with a tremendous come-back victory over Bcllarminc. the first fictory over the Bells in 16 years on the JV's. This win is even more incredible considering that nine start- ers were sidelined with injuries that day. Our win-loss record was 5 - 4 (3 - 3 in the league) and were two plays from a 5 - 1 league championship. But, through the re- cord and the Bcllarminc game were great accomplishments, they were hardly mea- sures of the success each of us achieved on a personal level. Although they share the number one position with two other schools, the long-awaited victory foreshadows a great team for the upcoming years at S.l. I laving a “ncvcr-say-dic” attitude, the team stunned St. Francis by a last min- ute 2 point conversion catapulting the Cats to a 15- 14 victory. Led by new Head Coach Shel Zatkin. the Cat’s accu- mulated a 6-6 record in league competition and a 4th place finish overall. The team showed true spirit, dedication, and exper- ience throughout the season as seen in two very close and intense losses against Bishop O'Dowd and Riordan. The outstanding in- dividual performances of Peter Walsh, the Dennis Carter award winning play of Steve McFeely, and the pinpoint outside shooting of C huck Kmanuel and Matt Prescott. These men added talent and depth to the squad. Matt Cannon’s sensational passing, and the amazing drives to the hoop of Ju- nior Damon Pierson also attributed to the team’s excellence as a whole. This kind of spirit and dedication, along with the hard- working play by all of the players under Coach Zatkin. proved that the 1987 team was more than worthy of the Saint Ignatius tradition of basketball excellence. CA. 94122 IGNATIAN TELESIS On December 14th, 1983, the 1987 Ignatian began to take shape. In an old notebook, notes were taken, and ideas were tested. Throughout my four year career with the Ignatian, I have continually added to this notebook. The ideas contained in the notebook have aided my staff in producing--in my opinion-the best yearbook 5.1. has ever seen. The purpose of this yearbook is to capture the spirit and vitality of the people who make 5.1. an exceptional institution. Through the lens of the camera, we were able to capture this spirit and release it into the book and hopefully into your hearts. This book is the only means available for documenting the spirit and vitality of S.I. The goal of this annual would not have been accomplished without the help of a few close friends. To my editors: Dan, George, Nathan, Max, and Steve, I thank you for your dedication and patience in working with an editor who sought nothing less than perfection. I must especially thank Dan Leonetti, a friend of twelve years, for keeping strange hours to make sure all the year's events were photographed. Thanks also goes to Max, George, Nathan, and Steve for sacrificing many hours to make this yearbook what it is today. A very special thanks goes to Mr. Mike Shaughncssy who helped me through the ups and downs of the yearbook and of life as well. I will never forget Mr. Shaughnessy. I cannot leave S.I. without mentioning the people who have made my experiences here very rewarding and gratifying. To Fr. Allender, S.J., Fr. Mibach, S.J., Br. Ellis, S.J., and Fr. Carlin, S.J., I will never forget your kindness. To Fr. Harris, S.J., Mr. Cecchin, Mr. Dullea, Mr. Calcagno, Mr. Vergara, Mr. Bjorkquist, and Mr. Frankie” Nemenzo, I will never forget your kind words and true concern. Finally, a big thanks goes to my family for their support and guidance. Pam, Gary, Angela, Frank, Jackie, Julie, and Mom and Dad, thanks for helping me to endure when I thought I could not. Goodbye SI.. .and thanks, Jim Lagomarsino Editor-in-Chief 1987 Ignatian It's finally 191 H over! The Class of 1987 Spring IgnatiaN Confirmation The sacrament of Confirmation is certainly a significant step in the growth of a Christian's faith in God. At Baptism the Church community recognizes the youth as a child of God. Thon after years of service and dedication to the Church, the youth is offered the chance to receive the Body of Christ. This is the Christian youth's second stop of initiation into the community of the Church. The third and final step in this process is that of Confirmation. Confirmation reaffirms the Christian's faith as an adult or as a soldier in Christ's army. This sacrament was celebrated on March 20 at St. Mary's Ca- thedral for 52 students in the presence of the entire St. Ignatius community. The presence of the community undoubtedly made the ceremony much more meaningful, as all agreed to initiate the confirmandi into the Church as adults. Fr. Rudy Schulze and Mr. Chip Libbey taught the one semester class, reminding the confirmandi of their acquired responsibility in the community. Hence, as a result of studious efforts by both the instructors and the students, the Confirmation celebration was a great success, The sacrament, symbolized by the annotating of oil and the bestowing of a prayer, was administered by His Excel- lency.
