They started quickly by defeating archrivals Riordan and Sacred Heart, and outplayed Scrra on their home field. However, injuries, bad breaks, and tough teams hampered the Cats' progress; as a result they lost to Bellarmine and St. Francis and experienced a disappointing 23-22 loss to Milty. Although S.l. couldn't gain a C.C.S. playoff berth this season, they had many outstanding high-caliber players. Among them were First Team All-WCAL players Sergio Azzolino, Joe Gaspardone, Doug Jackson, Colin Stretch, and Daniel Vaughn; and Second Team players Dave Becnel, Dan Lang, and Sean Ragan. With the juniors returning for league play next season, the Cats will be a team to be reckoned with. 1. 25 Riordan Opponent 13 21 Sacred Heart 14 21 Serra 14 3 Bellarmine 21 22 Mitty 23 11 St. Francis 28 46 (top) Joe Gaspardone eludes a defender, (above) Greg McCarthy runs for daylight. However, this only served to anger the Cats and the next week they regrouped and beat archrival S.H. The J.V. team played with spirit and enthusiasm throughout the season. Even in defeat their pride and poise shone through. This was evident in the fact that they did not get discouraged even after disappointing losses to Serra and Bcllarmine. Their persistence finally paid off and the Cats got a much needed victory the following week. The J.V. team had many outstanding players: among them are David Anderson, Martin Payne, Kibber O'Balle, and Ted Shim. They played tough throughout the season and barely lost three games by the combined total of nine points. Defensively, the Cats were not to be denied. They consistently shut down opponent scoring opportunities. This was exemplified by their hard- hitting shutout of the Sacred Heart Irish. On the other hand, the offense failed the Cats during cru- cial moments, and as a result, they lost a few heart- breaking games. With the experience, they gained this year and their tenacious defense the Frosh team should have high hopes for next year. 1. 2 Riordan Opponents 7 0 Sacred Heart 0 7 Serra 9 6 Bellarmine 26 12 Mitty 14 6 St. Francis 22 54 Hut One ... However, ever-tough Bellar- mine got in the way of S.I.'s quest for the Cross Country Championship. The '85 year was a suc- cessful one on all levels as three out of four teams placed second. Top performers of the varsity in- cluded Neil Fitzgerald, Tom Loftus, Robert Lind- strom, and Kevin Riordan. Up and coming stars from the J.V.'s will be Thomas De La Torre and Nathaniel Merchant. This will assure yet another tough Cross Country team next season. (left) Bennett leaves 'em in his dust. (top) Morrissey shows off his new Timex, (middle) S.l. jumps out to a lead. Soccer The J.V. team, despite the efforts of coaches Stiegeler and O'Leary, experienced a bittersweet season. The team itself gave a hundred percent every time out but just could not get over the hump. The J.V. team had six tough draws out of nine matches. Though this did not produce wins, it docs indicate that the potential to become a win- ning team exists. With the exception of two play- ers, the Cats are made up entirely of sophomores. With the nucleas of the team returning, the team should give all their opponents next year a tre- mendous battle. Possibly the best game of the season came against the Riordan Crusaders. Though the game did not mean anything to the W.C.A.L. Standings, the Cats' determination and character showed throughout the game. They finally emerged with a satisfying 1-0 win. Hopes arc high for the varsity team next year. With the returning players and the experience they will gain next year, the Cats' will finally get over the hump. 64 top: S.l. players surround the ball, middle: Mike I tuss recieves a pass from a teammate, bottom: Alfred Cucvarra guards the ball, left: Some good defense by Andy Pedrosa. The '86 team features a good blend of height, quickness, and talent. After struggling a bit in the earlier part of the season, the Cats rebounded and combined all their talents to move up in the W.C.A.L. stand- ings. Highlights of the season included wins over St. Francis 71-55, Milty 61-41, and the revenge game against the Sacred Heart Irish 56-33. A fired up team seemed to put their frustrating early sea- son behind them and came out strong to maul the Irish. This game might be the turning point in a very successful season. If the Cats' continue to win throughout the season, this will be remembered as the game which turned it around. The team is as diversified as it is deep. It features the outside shooting and ballhandling of Devin Coffey and Matt Cannon, while Martin Dioli, An- drew Brigham, and Greg Wall take care of oppos- ing teams on the inside. The team also has a deep bench which it utilizes frequently. Top reserves includes the Dioli twins, Morgan and David, Ron Fiore, Peter Walsh, and Barry Morre. All of these players put forth their respective talents to form one cohesive unit. At this point the Cats' can smell the playoffs and they arc streaking towards them. Soon, the entire league will feel the wrath of the Cats'. S.l. Basketball The Junior Varsity Basketball team of '86 will soon turn into the Varsity team of '87, and if this year's play is any indication of what is to come, the '87 team will be one of the most successful in recent history. The team was led by two juniors, Chuck Emanuel and Steve McFeely who were the leaders of the talented team. Top sophomores included Damon Pierson, Sebastian Hagler, and Lenny Gumm. They opened the season with a win over arch-rival Sacred Heart. However, they followed by dropping a closely-contested game to the Rior- dan Crusaders. But this set back did not faze the team as they ripped through the rest of league. They crushed the Mitty Monarch twice, beating them 69-39 and 68-49, and did the same to St. Francis. The highlight of the season came when they exacted revenge on the Riordan, Crusaders by beating them 56-55 in overtime. This was par- ticularly important because it gave the team confi- dence and inspiration. It proved that the Cat's could play with and beat the best team in the league. The team employed a fast break style of play which allowed them to literally run by their opponents. They consistly ran throughout the game, running their opponents ragged in the later periods. With a little more experience and time, the J.V. team has unlimited potential. S.I. Opponent 48 Sacred Heart 32 59 ST. The frosh basketball teams are the foundation of the St. Ignatius Basketball future. The frosh teams are out to improve their skills and learn the funda- mentals of basketball. As of this writing, the Fresh- man A's have compiled an impressive 6-2 record. This included wins over Riordan, Mitty, and Serra. This team has enough raw talent to ensure a suc- cessful future. The team played with both dedica- tion and spirit. If they continue to do so, the Cats will become unstopable force in the future. At this point in time, the team is 7-1 and tied for first place with the St. Francis Lancers. This year's B team features a devistating offense which has compiled the most points in the entire W.C.A.L. However, this in not a one-dimen- sional team. They have limited their opponents to the second lowest point total in the league. The B's have four more games left and have a chance to end up in first place in the W.C.A.L. standings. The Varsity team has six return- ing starters and the J.V. team has numerous sophomores who dominate the team. As of now, thay have just started their season and everyone is hopeful it will be a successful sea- son. 78 79 Golf First Row: John Bilbao, Pete Anderson, Craig Wong, Byron Lim, Pat Quinn, Nestor Lim Second Row; Jow Wraga, Matt Prescott, Brian O’Connor, Tim O'Riordan, John Tenorio, George Marinos. The season is yet to start at this time, but members of both teams seemed optimistic about their chances this year. Returning seniors George Marinos, Steve Hirshaw, Craig Wong, Alex Andreas, John Tenorio, and Joe Jezukewitz combine with strong young talent to provide a strong hopeful team for 1986. ■■■■ Craig Wong: lo divot or not to divot? 80 81 (First Row): Emmet Nolan, Michael Vella, Tod Steele, Matthew Wynne, Erik Choy, (Second Row): William Chastain, Glen Chan, Michael Carney, Anthony Ordonio, Doug Hagan, Charles Kovats. Coached by veteran la- crosse players John Murphy and Stockton Buck, they are one of the finest staffs in the Northern California League. This will truly be one of the most successful years of Lacrosse that S.l. will ever have. At time of printing, the Lacrosse team has not played yet, but the many returning varsity players, excellent coaches, and strong determination will surely pro- vide the Wildcats with an enjoyable season. The popularity of the sport has grown steadily in the three years Saint Ignatius has participated in it. There were sizable crowds at most of the S.l. meets which was appreciated by team members. The team was led by such wrestlers as Gerino Bcrangan, Casimiro Pierantoni, Garret McDonald, and Eric Carcamow. Eric Carcamow's achievments are par- ticularly impressive due to the fact that he is only a freshmen. The coach was Sam Barnachia who returned for his second year. 86 also marked the first time that Saint Ignatius hosted a dual meet on S.l. turf. Many spectators came to sec the Cats' and were impressed by the quickly rising sport. General Paranoia, Falwell Fan) Afterword Well, it's finally over. No more deadlines, No more classes. It's been a long, hard four years, but it's also been some great times and some great friends. S.I.'s a wonderful school, and I wish to thank the teachers, the moderators, and especial- ly the students for making it what it is. This place isn't perfect, but it's the best there is. I'd like to wish the Class of 1986 the best of luck in whatever the future holds. This book is the memory of the Class of 1986. That makes it very special work. I only hope that it is quality enough to be an accurate and joyful souvenir of this year. In many ways, I think it could have been better (the book, not the year). At the same time, however, everything we do is an ex- tension of ourselves, and this book does have my personality and style in it. I can't, and don't wish to, apologize for that. I just hope that everyone, especially the Class of 1986, can use this book to remember the laughter, the tears, and the events of high school Of course, this yearbook couldn't have been completed by me alone. I want to thank everyone who helped with this book, but especially editors Dan Maraviglia, Tom Ling, Dan Leoneili, Marco Croppi, and artist Jeff johnstone. Even more thanks arc due to two people who were not only editors but great friends: John Wonder and Jim Lagomarsino. You guys are the greatest. I also must thank Mike Shaughnessy. Most other mod- erators would have had a coronary attack or beat me up, but his patience makes Job look like a neurotic. Our representative from the yearbook company, Stan Wyne, deserves thanks for dealing with airheads like me for a living. I'd also like to thank Mrs. Radonavich for the constant use of her typewriter, and Paul Hanley and Terry McAteer for support, guidance, and direction. I also must thank my family for the love and encouragement they gave to me when I really needed it. And of course, thanks to the Pepsi-Cola Company for keeping me alive and awake in times of stress and exhaustion. Farewell and thanks to all, Dave Halsing, ed.
