Football because for the first time in the 16 year history of the Central Coast Section, the Varsity Wildcats earned a playoff berth. This proud season began with an undefeated preseason, a solid 3-2-1 league record, and ended with a good showing in the C.C.S. After outscoring pre-season opponents 105-22, S.I. en- tered the tough W.C.A.L. They opened with big rival St. Francis, losing a hotly contested game, 10-0. However, they rebounded the next two weeks, destroying Riordan 41-13, and Sacred Heart 52-0. In a game with serious effects on the playoff picture, the Cats battled Serra to a 0-0 tie, winning the California tie-breaker. After losing to Bellarmine, the Cats played what they thought was their final game, a 20-0 win over Mitty in the mud. But by the means of the draw, the Wildcats were selected to be one of the at-large teams in the C.C.S. In S.I.âs pre- miere appearance, they beat previously unbeaten Los Ga- tos, 18-14. Their next game was a heartbreaking loss to Saratoga on a last-second field goal. The long season came to a close, but it will long be remem- bered for the fine play of First Team All-Leaguers Joe Corey, Captain Joe Vollert, Captain Ralph Godoy, Paul LaRocca, and Paul Ravetti. Also who played fine seasons were Captain Steve Bluford, Matt Devine, and Perry McDowell, who all made Second Team All-W.C.A.L. 154 (opposite page) 1. Football The Junior Varsity team is an impor- tant part of the S.I. football program for many reasons. It is here that the younger players receive their last preparation be- fore moving up to Varsity. It is here that they work on perfecting techniques learned in Freshmen year, and it here that they gain valuable game experience which benefits them over the next two years. But most of all, it is here that they hone the competitive edge which makes S.I. football the force that it has become. Coach Shel Zatkin said about this yearâs J.V.âs, âThey had good potential, good enthusiasm, and by the end of the year, they were very competitive in a tough league. Although their league re- cord was only 3-3, they played strongly in all their games. They showed that in future years, S.I. football will be a force to be reckoned with in the W.C.A.L. 1. Frosh Football Freshman Football is a time for learning. Most of the players have never played football before, and the first days of practice are controlled bed- lam. Freshman year concentrates on the basics: blocking, tackling, running, and learning a new system. The freshmen must learn these now, to be successful later. How much the Frosh learned is more important than their won-lost record. However, this year the freshmen had a winning percentage. After losing to St. Francis, they played one of the best freshmen games of all time against Riordan. Down 21-0 as they entered the locker room at the half, they came back to make the score 21-20 in the fourth quarter. After the ensuing kickoff, they got a safety on the third play from scrimmage to win the game. The en- thusiasm from this game was to continue for the rest of the season, as the Cats went on to a 3-3 league record. i 162 Front: Rovetti. Not only did the team begin training before the school year started, but they continued to follow a demanding workout schedule of nine miles a day for three months. The team would often run in the morning before classes; this devotion is necessary to be successful in a sport like Cross Country, so each and every member of the team de- serves credit for their time and effort. This year, the Varsity had a respectable season with a good showing in the Arti- choke Invitational and the Crystal Springs Invitational meets. They slowly improved with each meet as they prepared them- selves for their most important confronta- tion, W.C.A.L. trial meets and finally the W.C.A.L. finals. Under the impressive coaching of Julius Yap and Robert Graby, the Varsity Cats placed well enough in the league finals to advance to the Region 1 meet. They accom- plished this feat under the leadership of captains Kieran OâLeary and Tom Grey. Also contributing greatly to this yearâs Var- sity team were sophomores Kevin Riordan and Neil Fitzgerald, moved up for their ex- ceptional athletic ability. Riordan also re- ceived the MVP award, while OâLeary was elected the Most Valuable Senior. This yearâs recipient of t he admirable Riley Su- toff Award was senior Tom Grey. Undoubt- edly, this Varsity teamâs dedication and de- votion accounted lor their proud season. 164 (opposite page) 1. Kieran O'Leary gets an early jump against one of his opponents. 2. Their unending dedication to the sport is shown by their extremely difficult work-outs. The team practices with the varsity running both before and after school each day. The junior division teams are also emotionally demanding on the runners. Persistance and maximum effort are required while these young athletes pre- pare themselves for the varsity level. The Cross-Country pro- gram is especially proud of its sophomore and junior runners who were moved up to the varsity team. The future looks good for this young, talented group of men. However, records are not what athletics are about at S.I.; athletics are meant to build character, increase strength and stamina, and make men. In these respects, this season was one of the most suc- cessful in recent memory. All year long the Cats were hit hard by injuries, including the untimely losses of Kevin McCarthy and Kevin Coffey. Even with these injuries, S.I. Attacked each contest gamely, and were in a posi- tion to win practically all of their games. The Cats kept their heads up and played like champions, no matter what the score. But the 1984 Soccer season may be best summed up by one of the senior starters. We may have had a poor record, but we came together at the end of the season. We showed our pride as a team by tying Bellarminc, the league champions, and beating Mitty. the runner-up. in our last two games. Soccer 168 1. Hon Cisneros, rallied al- most 50 students of varied class rank togeth- er for practice everyday. But serious injuries hampered the team, and its size gradually shrunk. This did not, however, deter the spirit of the dedicated few who remained with the team. Inspired by their captains. Camozzi. Savarcse. and Casamiro, the wres- tling team completed a very successful sea- son as u first year team on the amateur cir- cuit. 6 177 Crew VARSITY: (Front) Carl Borders, Bunion Fitzgerald, Greg Murphy. The Frosh level is where the young cagers learn the fundamentals of the game, and prepare to lead the Varsity of the future. It gives the fans a glimpse into the future, and if this yearâs Frosh teams are any indicators, the S.I. basketball program will continue its winning ways in the future. The Frosh A team compiled a very successful 8-4 record, finishing second in the tough W.C.A.L. Although the team was led all season by the play of Colin Stretch. David Dioli, and Joe Solaney, the success rests on the team as a whole. The talent was practically the same from the first man to the twelfth man: for the first time in Coach Mike Thomasâ seven years of coaching every player started at least once in the preseason. Coach Thomas had this to say about his team this year: âThey were somewhat unpredictable, but they always played well under pressure. It was hard for them to put four good quarers together, but they usually played well enough to win.â As successful as the Aâs were this year, the Bâs were more successful in their own league. Led by the able coaching of Matt Barmore, the Frosh B team dominated the W.C.A.L. enroute to a 12-0 season. Even though the team had only average size, their intelligence and court sense more than made up for this. Good performances were constantly turned in by Kevin Williamson, Matt Cannon. Matt Prescott, and Peter Walsh; and Coach Barmore praises the bench for always being ready to play and giving a great deal of help. But Barmore credits the teamâs chemistry for most of their success: âMore than any other group Iâve coached, these guys played together the best. 185 I. Led by sophomores Dan Vaughn, LeNorris Davis, and Martin Dioli, the team fought its way to a 9-3 showing, only one game out of first place. The J.V.âs coached once again by Steve Phelps, had a great mix of height strength, and speed: this group should contribute much to next yearâs Varsity. This yearâs Varsity Basketball Team must be considered as one of the greatest teams in this proud history of S.E. Sports. Under the superb coaching of Bob Drucker, in his eigh- teenth season as Head Coach, the Cats breezed to a 10-2 preseason and were expected to win the league title. What they did was beyond all expectation: they steamrolled their first eleven league opponents by such scores as 90-62, 78-19. and 52-37. With a chance to be- come only the second team logo undefeated in W.C.A.L., they lost their last game of the sea- son to Sacred Heart. 59-48. The next week they got revenge on the Irish by the same score. Although they had lost to Riordan, 61- 56, in overtime, the Wildcats defeated the Crusaders in the Championship. 58-56. As this book goes to print, the Cats are preparing for their fifth straight C.C.S. appearance. This yearâs team had as much talent as any team in recent history. 6'7â Levy Middle- brooks led the league in scoring (19.8 pts. game), rebounds (13 rebounds game), and second in the FG percentages (0.687). Dan Oy harcabal was a deadly outside shooter, averag- ing 11.8 pts. game, and provided leadership at all times. Dave Wilson was the high-jumping forward who made the flashy and spectacular plays. Paul LaRocca and -Joe Vollert were con- servative steady players, who didn't score of- ten hut always hustled. Galen Sorrells. Dwight Skinner, Jason Standifer were always ready for the call to action from the bench. How far will this team go this year? See the Spring Supplement. 1.
