To be born into the Church—and I can only speak of my own Church, knowing no other—is at once a burden and a comfort. The burden is felt first. The burden of ordinance and prohibition and, later, of belief. The comfort comes afterwards, when one begins to ask questions; and when one is presented with a key to every problem of existence. Make the first conscious act of faith, accept the first prem- ise, and the whole logic falls into place. One may sin, but one sin inside a cosmos. One is constrained to repentance by the sheer order of it. One is free within a system, and the system is secure and consoling, so long as the will is fixed in the first act of faith ... -Morris West- 8 10 Mr. Norm Kreuter, Mr. Frank Corwin, Mr. Steve Phelps, Mr. Bill Morlock (Dept. Jim Schaukowitch, S.J. 80 MY NATIVE LAND Breathes there the man, with soul so dead. Who never to himself hath said, This is my own, my native land! Whose heart hath ne'er within him burned, As home his footsteps he hath turned. From wandering on a foreign strand! If such there breathe, go, mark him well; For him no Minstrel raptures swell; High though his titles, proud his name. Boundless his wealth as wish can claim; Despite those titles, power, and pelf, The wretch, concentered all in self, Living shall forfeit fair renown, And, doubly dying, shall go down To the vile dust, from whence he sprung. Unwept, unhonorcd, and unsung. -Scott- COMMUNITY SERVICE RETREATS 83 Liturgy Be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice; by doing this you will lose all reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win men's admiration. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing; your almsgiving must be a secret, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you. (Moderator) Like one, that on a lonesome road doth walk in fear and dread, And having once turned round, walks on, and turns no more his head; Because he knows a frightful fiend doth close behind him tread. But soon there breathed a wind on me, nor sound nor motion made; Its path was not upon the sea, in ripple or in shadow. -Coleridge The school year 1982 had drawn into its last few days, and yet the year is not over. As the countless many students, faculty, and friends thumb through these pages of hard work, I have yet to say a few words. This year was a good year, however, S.l. has seen better. Some people are going to complain no matter how good the book is, and all I can say to those, is to reflect back at the type of help we received from the students and faculty. After doing this, then judge as to who has the last word to say. However, I would like to thank Mr. Shaughnessy, Mr. Meshot, S.J., and Fr. Farrina, S.J. who were very valuable to us all. I would also like to thank my fellow stud Chris and the rest of my staff: Don, Bob, Paul, and Dan. As is, we are complete. It is now time to leave and to get back on the right track. Thank you, Georges Droogmans (Editor) People, please listen. If we want The world we Know to survive Then man and Beast must work Together, for only Together we shall Survive. 208 -Ramil Kahal
