St. Ignatius is associated with unique people and special events... thej essence of our growth is in this interaction, in the process we bavi discovered and struggled ove much about ourselves and othe Yet we have come to know, to accept, and to love ourselves anc our community. . . We have grown in the peace of a sacramental encounter. . . .. .a fatigue of antics evoki ..in celebrating in prayer our thanksgiving... in pondering the wisdom of others. . . P' vl ...in probing the universe ... in the drama of an athletic contest o nese 1 f . .. and even upon the final night of graduation... Br. Douglas E. Draper, S.J. (Dean of Men) Rev. Russell J. SOPH FROSH 162 163 164 _______________________ — In the beginning, I was very mystified about the people who controlled S.l. As I reached the Athletic Department I met a man who acted as though the Prep had been his domain for years. He was the Head Football Coach, Gil Haskell. While I played football the years flew by,nurturing my relationship with the school community and Mr. Haskell. Football at S.l. became an experience we shall always remember because of the spirit and charisma with which this great man applied himself to the program. However, Gil Haskell is also a true gentleman off the field and developed his players and students along those same lines. He is one of those unique individuals who would not tolerate people simply going through the motions to reach a goal, but instead he sought to inspire pride, initiative, and a respect for ourselves and our accomplishments. He has two maxims I feel everyone should treasure: Enthusiasm is the force that causes momemtum and Second effort should always become first nature . They both typify the rare quality of man who dedicated a part of himself to Saint Ignatius. Ilnck- Darren Cde Baca A Tribute to Coach Haskell After five years as head football coach at St. Ignatius, Gilbert Haskell has accepted a position as special teams coach for the University of Southern California Trojans. Gil's contribution to St. Ignatius goes back long before his coaching career began. As a student, he played three years of varsity football and baseball in the last era of AAA athletics. Despite injuries, Gil's leadership and athletic ability added significantly to the sportmanship and team spirit evident in those years. After playing in college and, briefly, for the 49ers, Gil began his coaching career at Riordan High School and moved to St. Ignatius in 1969. In 1973, he accepted the position as head coach and compiled an impressive record of 36 wins and 13 losses. But more than that, Gil has encouraged sportsmanlike conduct on and off the field and demanded teamsmanship of each player who wears the red and blue. These are the lessons that should endure long after the number of wins and losses are forgotten. As principal of St. Ignatius, I join with my athletic department in thanking Coach Haskell for his long and valuable contribution to St. Ignatius and wishing him the best of luck next year at USC.
