Mr . Rene Morlock (Librarian) Bro. Daniel Peterson, SJ. (Head Librarian) % GRADUATES 20 Where are you going next year? It seems every senior has heard that question asked hundreds of times in the past few months. But it was not too long ago that the ques- tion asked was quite different. It was just about four years ago when we were asked, What school did you go to last year? Since that time a lot has happened to us. We have gone through four of the most important years of our lives. We came into SI as children on the verge of adolescence, and we are leaving as young men ready for the future. Just as we have grown up, we have grown together. Instead of a collection of students thrust into the same class, we have become one class; the class of '77. Even though our tastes and preferences are as varied now as they ever were, we are bound together by the one thing we have in common: the SI experience. What is that experience? It is not any one big experi- ence but rather the culmination of several small experiences. The Friday morning liturgies and the Friday night games; the after school activities and the after school detention all contribute to this experience. We have been a part of it for the past few years and, in these growing years, it has helped form us. Next year we will be in colleges throughout the country learning new things and meeting new people. But no matter where we go or what we do, we will remember this experi- ence; it is a part of us, and we are the better for it. 46 50 Faculty Senior Index David Alden, ā... id ratnar ba Alexander Amoroso, -And away Russell Anixter, in «« mattan ot Edward Aquino, i cam . i taw. tin,ng 990' optnton. our adrataarm arc mtanai and tth. - Mark Turn,Ā Gene Bantay, -Acoapt ma to what Charles Barberini, -Ana thw w David Barulich Michel Baylocq. vĀ u to to Ā I am - an mdimdualiat - not a lollowar f mara. all m on placa, a ganaraton ton lion, it may not pata your may again. in tpaca. anth no tuna to nan again. Days where I strove to fit in or somehow become a part of the school. Always battling with that question of how to get involved. The answer, of course, was to join an activity. Not only one but maybe two or even three. For where does the heart of the school lie? In classes? In studies? Maybe; but I, myself would not like to think so. Activities are the backbone of a school. They teach, they help us to grow, and they give us the opportunity to relate socially with a Christian attitude. 54 55 56 58 60 61 62 63 64 68 70 71 72 73 74 Orchestra Band CSF Forum Language Clubs Art Publicity Service Club SI Outbound ri r The 2001 Block Club KRSI Rally Spirit Club Cheerleaders 75 Dance Committee 76 Dance 78 Retreats 80 Liturgy 81 A SC 82 Chess Club 83 Science Fiction Computer Club 84 BSU 85 Rod and Gun Club 86 Drama 88 Fall Play 90 Musical Theater Workshop 92 Spring Musical 94 Cast Lists Front Row: Farley, Bum Second tonv Gettian, AniāJi %hird Row: Ohno, Maqseau, Aethos,. I idolized the young men garbed in red and blue hustling on the field and their peers in the stands cheering for them. I never imagined I would become an athlete for SI, for that was a dream and dreams are not supposed to come true. Each game I participated in; I will remember the rest of my life. This year's championship game was the most exciting and depressing day of my high school career, but I promised my coach not to dwell on the matter. I will never forget the grueling practices I went through during the preseason, nor will I forget singing the fight song after the victories and losses. The glamour and glory of being an athlete at SI is really not all that important. It's being able to rely on the next guy. It's the love and honesty among teammates. It's the knowledge and discipline you receive from your coach. It's knowing the most dedicated people of an SI athletic program, the managers and trainers. I owe so much to the athletic program at SI, for it has given me a great deal of knowledge about myself. I guess I can sum up my ideas from what an old and dear Jesuit priest taught me after a day of practice. He said to remember this Latin saying, ''Mens sana in corpore sano. ā A sound mind in a healthy body. 98 Cross Country 104 Intramurals 106 Football 114 Soccer 122 Basketball 130 Track 138 Baseball 146 Swimming 147 Bowling 148 Golf 150 Tennis 152 Sports Stats VARSITY Phil Bennett Wladimir Wlassosky Front row: Reidy, Bennett, Tristant, Hannewalt, Magee. H.Ā UV When a freshman comes to SI, he finds an over- whelming variety of activities available to him. Awed by all the exciting possibilities he wants to explore and touch all of them. He therefore joins a multitude of activities. Slowly he watches his grades nose dive as study time is eaten away by extra-curricular life. He finds he must be a jack of all trades or a master of some. He begins to allocate his time. As he skips to sophomore year he becomes deeply rooted in his selected activities. He probably has chosen two sports, one of the myriad of cultural activities and perhaps a service outlet. Whether it is junior varsity football or baseball, musical theater workshop, or the debating team, he will find his friendships expanding with each activity. As he climbs into the chair of a junior he is nudging for leadership. He tries to improve and put his personality into the club. He also wants to leave his mark in the sport in which he participates. The soul of SI may be its scholarship but surely its soul is fostered among the extra-curricular activities. 156 Freshman 166 Faculty 170 Sophomores 180 Faculty 184 Juniors 194 Faculty 198 Ignatian 200 Epilogue FRESH MEM Robert Abela Carlos Aburto Richard Acacio Angel Alcaraz Richard Alden Alejandro Aleman John Almerico Vincent Anderson Andrew Andreotti Norman Angeles George Applegarth Anthony Arado Daniel Arata Robert Arata Gregory Athas Robert Ayaman Steven Balestrieri Kevin Barberini John 8arbieri William Barrios Michael Barton Kenny Bauer Richard Bechtel Fred Beck Steven Belluomim Tomas Bermejo David Bernstein Jeffrey Bertam Gregory BlotC John Bragagnolo David Braun Eric Brugnara Thomas Burke Marc Burkhardt David Cable Kevin Callaghan David Campbell Gerard Camous John Campion Kenneth Canedo Robert Cantwell Kevin Capitolo Philip Carlevaris Robert Casipe Lawrence Cavallim Patrick Celeski Lawrence Chiarella Robert Chin David Chong Kenneth Churton John Clark Anthony Clifford David Clukey Patrick Connolly Bernard Corry Timothy Crudo Carl Cruz Kenneth Cruz Michael Cullinan John Curran Rodney Currington Leonard Davey Christopher Davis James Deasy Michael Deely Oennis DeMartini Paul OePaolo Phillip deSouza Lawrence Oeubler Christopher DiNello Cornelius Doherty Michael Dorcy George Duarte Philip Duarte John Ducharme Michael Dudorolf Robert Duffield Kevin Dully Reuben Edejer Robert Eldredge Brian Elliott Richard Ennis Joseph Espil Joseph Everson Antonio Fernandez Joseph Fernando Jeremiah Fitzgerald Paul Fitzpatrick T to 8: David Bernstein(President), Louis Garcia (Vice-President), Pat Stretch(Sect.-Treas.), riot pictured: David Alden(Sgt. at Arms.) The time is 3:15 p.m. Our last deadline is a little short of two hours away, and as I look at the progress chart I see that some five pages of the book have yet to be completed. Well, no worry, I trust my staff. They will finish the pages. The question always comes up at the start of the new book: what should a yearbook be? We came up with a lot of good answers: a photo essay of the school year, a quality newspaper with plenty of pictures and not an abundance of words, a collection of personalities, a self expression of the staff in layout design and art work, a work of art. After putting our minds to work (which is rare for some of the staff), we set a goal: to communicate a message. With this in mind, the staff of the 1977 Ignatian went to work. Photographers were all over the place this year: at every sport event, at the plays, at practices, shoot- ing from every corner of the school building, catching the parties on Baker's Beach, painting the wall on Brotherhood Way. With the pictures my photographers got this year, I could be a professional blackmailer. I raise my hat to Dexter Chan to thank him and his staff of photographers for a job done well, and for service above and beyond the call of duty. Back on the home home front, where the layout staff worked vigorously to create a different ef- fect for each page. Bill Dedo and Frank Fisher (better known as Francois) created both masterpeices on page paste up, and cataclysmic rubber cement fights. The question is where would I be without Michel Baylocq? God only knows. Mike was always in the office designing pages or running to the store while I was tied-up in some meeting. Who was the moderator? Well turn back a page, he's the one with the mustache and collar. Great person and very devoted. He wanted us to do our own thing this year. Without Kevin Leidich, S.J., we would not be where we are now. If your name is misspelled, tuff' ā what's a yearbook without mispelled names? But if your . book is falling apart at the seams, talk with the lady on the same page as Mr. Leidich. Katie Collins is her name and she's a great person. Besides being from the Midwest, (and everyone knows that's where I'm from), she had plenty of patience and plenty of trust. Well, Taylor Publishing Company, you gave us the best! As I have been writing this letter, three more pages have been finished. Mike is recovering from a rubber cement attack by the crazed Layout Editor, Dexter is brewing up another Cup Of Noodles, Bill is stalling Katie, Kevin says he wants to talk, time is short and the last two pages will be completed. I think we accomplished our goal. We sure communicated plenty in this book. Thanks for everything. We had a great time. Your friend, 4 4 Bill Burg Editor of the Ignatian 77
