Saint Ignatius College Preparatory San Francisco 1975 People, sort of a funny word. It means so much, and so many things to each of us. With it, we can realize our world is a true and worthwhile experience. We pave a way into it, no matter how small or seemingly meaningless it is. In doing so, we work with others. So, in time, we discover the most important part of our experience is people. As one goes on in life, one can see that there is not just one type of person— everybody is different .in their own way; everybody has their own proffession, ideas and futures. Part of our diver- sity, as we now go to one school, is that we all come from our own areas and we’ll go our paths. With so many differences, is there any reason as to what holds us together? It can be said that there is a bond of unity between every- one. The realization is that we see a part of ourselves, in the other person and we want to invest ourselves in that other person, it is this more than anything else that makes this community we call S.l PEOPLE TABLE OF CONTENTS Page 34 Art Publicity Committee 14 Student Council 36 Rally Committee 16 Home Coming Queens 38 KZIC 18 Sunday Night Liturgy 39 Sanctuary Society 20 Student Workers 40 Christian Life Community 21 Service Club 42 Block Club 22 Band 43 Stage Crew 24 B.S.U. 44 Forum 25 A.S.C. 46 C.S.F. 26 Dances 48 Administration 28 Cheerleaders 52 Freshmen 30 Ambient 64 Sophomores 0 32 S.l. The Band plays for the rallies at school and for the football and basketball games throughout the season. They also per- form in the school musical and in the Spring Concert. Membership is open to all who play a musical instrument and all who wish to learn. Mr. Sablinsky, the Band's conductor, has taken great steps to increasing the Band's membership. This year, a Beginning Band class was initiated and membership was also opened to all the girls' high schools in the area. The Band picture was taken at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. The Asian Students Coalition was established in the winter of 1973 by a few seniors of the graduating class as an organization with two primary goals. The first goal is to help young Asian-Americans adapt to a unique environ- ment of the community of Saint Ignatius and to the ever changing world. It also was established to give the rest of the Community at S.I. insight into the Asian-American experi- ence. It wants to give an accurate picture of who we really are. Father Growney continues in his high school antics as the Dean's right hand man. S.J. “a quarter century of excellence” NOVEMBER 110 the rainmaker On Thursday, November 14th, the 1974-75 drama season bowed with one of the most successful fall plays in recent memory. The Rainmaker was thrilling theatre. The Rainmaker is a powerful comedy set in the West during a drought. The plot concerns the antics of a fast- talking con man who promises to bring rain — and his idea is so whacky, so refreshing and so grandoise that people buy it. While people bang bass drums to rattle rain out of the sky, the rainmaker turns his magic on a plain Jane and transforms her into a beauty. H.C. Paul Dallara Mike Quast Bob Higgins The Ignatian is a people oriented activity. It is not made for the staff, but for the students and St. Ignatius. In doing this the Head Editors; Paul Dallara (Photo Editor), Bob Higgins (Organizational Editor),and Mike Quast (Layout Editor), have tried to bring out the whole action of the year, the side lines as well as the team working, and these things have been put in a more eye appealing pattern. In work- ing for the students we have enjoyed ourselves, but our greatest pleasure is that the people will enjoy the book as much as we have had in putting it together. We would like to thank Joel Loquvam, American Yearbook Com- pany, and Wolfgang Flies, and, in a special way, our moderator Mr. Larry Ehren S.J. It is hard to feel the absence of a friend, a brother, a classmate. Friday, March 14 of this year, was a day of such a loss. From the first days of school, we were aware he was not with us day to day in class. We felt that, and each in his own way. tried to support Dan as he followed out his journey. That Friday stands out in our hearts, and so does Dan. EDMOND ZAPPIA Fr. Peter F. filice, S.J. Theology 3,4, Assistant Principal for Campus Ministry, Sophomore Counselor. This man is whom you turn to at a moment's notice, whether it is for counseling or just to let off steam. His office door is always open, as is his mind to any suggestions or criticism. In all truth, Fr. Peter Filicc, S.J., is one of the best additions SI has received this year. tnMo. Fr. John R. Becker, S.J. English 2,3,4, Moderator Inside S.l. Mr. Lovette is the senior counsellor in charge of college entry. He advises students and tries to help them on their way toward their profession. Mr. Steven Lovette Senior College Counsellor Vibrant with the power and stamina that all his years teaching lgnatian$ cannot dilute, able to whip through the most ponderous ’ tragedy or sonnet, just as he whips through Golden Gate Park on his bicycle; this is Father John Becker. Besides being a man of action, he is also one that can enjoy a pun, counsel a worried student, or give a retreat. All of this, plus the chores of helping keep Inside S.l. on an even keel, only makes him ready for the next day to begin all over, ready to help where needed. Who is Mr. LaRocca anyway? How does he get away with teaching Sicilian economics? Have you ever wondered where he gets all those new cars, all those new suits, and all that fresh fish? Why does Mr. Drucker always have to call a time out in the middle of a game to explain the basketball rules to him? When were all his fabulous talents discovered — the ability to rip telephone books in half, to play superb trash basketball, and to keep an office immaculate? Fr. Lentz, S.J. is a diminutive man in stature, a gigantic man in intelligence. He is a person who possesses an unusual combination of qualities. He holds an incomprehensible know- ledge of mathematics and an almost unreal, dry sense of humor. His attitude toward his stu- dents is always one of utmost respect, causing them to respect themselves and their intelligence. Fr. Gerald Lentz, Math 1,4. Patterson Mr. Patterson has to be one of the most intelligent and humorous teachers I have had at S.l. In his Calculus class you have a lot of work to do on your own, but, he goes over it with you to make sure you grasp it. Indeed, All Seniors should Take Calculus. Mr. George M. Patterson Calculus 4, Prob and Stats 4, Mathematics Department Head. S.J. Fr. Lentz Father Ryan has always shown his brothers their divine worth with- out any recognition of his own. All Seniors will remember his Theology course as being one of the most priceless in the S.l. Experience . Fr. William Ryan, S.J. Theology 4, Chairman Theology Dept. .nejo mich How can I describe my surprise - Theology with Mr. Nejasmich which was a rebirth into a fuller, more satis- fying Christian life. I was totally en- lightened and will never forget the fundamentals of Christian thought this giant gave to me. You only have to walk into his bright classroom full of pillows and instantly all your tensions are gone; you are relaxed and ready to appreciate the genius and the total majesty of this great man. Mr. Steven C. Nejasmich, SJ. Theology 1, Sociology 4, Moderator S.l. Outbound, Frosh Football Coach, Frosh Soccer Coach. Mr. Robert Orucker U.S. History 4. Varsity Basketball Coach. The honorable Professor of Basketball has proven once again to be as skillful directing his U.S. History classes as his sensational basckctball team. All St. Ignatius, especially the senior class, salutes Robert K. Orucker with a proud Bene! Our resident Professor of Physics has once again measured up to his own high standards. Coupled with his unique visual instructional approach, he has shown us many things. Fr. Richard D. Spohn, S.J. Physics 4. This OK Psychology teacher has spent hours of devoted work to help achieve a better S.I. Community. Besides owing the present perfect condition of their class schedules to him, the seniors also consider him a real friend. Mr. Terry Hall Asian Studies 3,4. hall KAVANAUGH Mr. Frank Kavanau s One of our long time residents here at English 3,4. S.I. is English teacher Mr. Frank Coach Kavanaugh. His two classes. Sports and Frontier Literature, contain an amazing variety of topics ranging from the Theory of Baseball to the Battles of the Nez Peces Indians . From being a vague name on a roster of teachers and courses, this priest has taken a full share of the history classes here, along with helping out at the liturgies and help coaching a surprisingly successful tennis team. He also has the distinction of sharing in some of the duties of the other clergy here, while also commuting from his parish in Colma. This is Fr. Ring, an adopted member of the S.l. Community. Fr. Curtis C. Bryant, S.J. Psychology 4. Senior Counselor, Director of Guidance and Counselling. Mr. Terry Hall is an easy going teacher who is more interested in the students learning and getting meaning out of his class rather than the memorization of facts and meaningless trivia. His class gives an awareness that mere facts and figures cannot give alone. His personal dedication and his flair in presenting material gives the class added meaning and great depth. Fr. Vincent D. Ring U.S. History 3.4. ■o dg San Francisco is a city of many views, and many sights. Within its boundaries are some of the most famous land marks of our country. Some of these landmarks are special signs, especially to those of us who have grown in the City by the Bay. 1914 was the year that Saint Ignatius Church was constructed on the Campus of University of San Francisco. It has stood on that hill swept with wind as a guide to sailors, and a sign of faithfulness to those who pass it or stop in for a moment of prayerful quiet. In that same year, a young Saint Ignatius High School Graduate was also beginning a life that would be a similar sign. On a September day of that year, Charles B. Largan entered the Society of Jesus. As with any sign. He was unsure where this chosen life would lead him. His life in the Jesuits took him to many places and activities during his years of study and training. After Ordination to the Priesthood, Father Largan in 1929 came to the Community at the school he had graduated from in his own home city. From that time to the present. Father gave his time not only to his students but to many of the people he came to know in his years of giving. Although Father no longer teaches at his own Alma Mater, his giving to others continues. He, like S.l. Church, are a witness to God's good- ness and faithfulness in the world. On September 21, 1974, the Jesuit Community of Saint Ignatius gathered to celebrate his sixty years of Jesuit life. The larger Community of Saint Ignatius wishes to extend its thankfulness and appreciation to what this man has done for S.l. in the past, and what he has become for us. Fr. However, we must look back at this year with both joy and sorrow. The sorrow we refer to is the death of Daniel Casey, a senior; a fel- low student who will be remembered by all those who knew him. The joy we captured was that of the Varsity Basketball's fantastic season. All their victories meant a history making season record of 28-2. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and this year is no exception. As the year has come to a close some of us will be leaving school, but we will be taking a part of this school with us. We have been in activities and given ourselves to one another as we have worked together. For some, they have found them- selves; but for most they are on the way to the truth that is found in our friends. This truth in working with people, even though it is not easy, but we must do it to be something, a living person. In working together as a team, the Editors of the Ignatian have found that we are working for the people and we have been trying to put as much of the individual as the world he inhabits as we can. We are very glad with what we have pro- duced, but we hope that it is you who are pleased with what you have done this year and are happy to remember it forever. Michael Quast, Paul Dallara, and Bob Higgins
