J. BERNARD MURPHY Frequently we hear discussions comparing the new S.I. with the old Stanyan street school. These discussions often evolve into arguments centered around whether or not there is such a thing as S.I. Spirit still extant in the school. For many people, Mr. J.B.Murphy, a man who started his teaching career when the Stanyan street school was the new S.I., gives proof that there is still a unique spirit at St. Ignatius. Mr. Murphy has assumed many roles during his thirty-five years at the school. He is, first and always a teacher-exhorting his students (sometimes in less than gentle tones) to become better than they are. In his years at the school as athletic direc- tor during the fifties and sixties, no S.I. team would enter a contest without seeing Mr. Murphy there in his lucky yel- low tie to cheer them on. Other roles have been spent as personal conselor to many a young scholastic or layman. In all of these roles, in his contact with hundreds of students and teachers, one mes- sage has always been clear- Mr. S.I. is sincerely interested in you and in your growth as a Christian man. Mr.J.B.Murphy is a man who lives the Ignatian Spirit through his loyalty to his family, to his Church, and to the entire Saint Ignatius Community. MR. J.B. MURPHY Algebra 1 CONTENTS: C.L.C. 54 Sun. But for him, we would not have had the fine Varsity Football pictures that we do have. I would also like to thank my executive staff for the long hours they put into this publication and for the even longer hours putting up with the editor. Don Hi rose deserves special recognition for the fine job he has done in printing 80% of the pictures in this book. Mike Quast also deserves credit for the many pages of layout and paste-up he has done in re- sponse to requests from myself and the other section editors, Don Kitt, Jerry Matthews, and Bob Higgins. The entire staff owes thanks to our moderator, Mr. Ehren, S.J., for his guidance and creative talent. Newspaper Debut Ends Successfully San Francisco, Ca. This month marks the completion of the first year of operation of S.I.'s newest publica- tion, The 2001. Printed cussed the advantages of a weekly or bi-week- ly publication. They say a need for rapid presentation of news in a straighforward on regular newsprint and simulating the lay- out and format of a daily newspaper. The 2001 is published every other week. Students, faculty and administra- tion alike have lauded the paper as a needed addition to an already fine, but incomplete, publications department. Last May, students got together with the administration and dis- manner. The answer—a newspaper to supplement S.I.'s longstanding newsmagazine, Inside SI Late that month, Mr. Robert Marino, S.J, arrived on the scene. Sporting a formidable background in journa- lism, Mr. Marino im- mediately set about looking for a staff. This was difficult, says Marino, because, Noone at S.I,had any experience working on a newspaper and noone wanted the burden and responsibility of be- ginning one. All was solved when generous and capable Tony Guz- zetta and Michael Cur- ran stepped foward and ventured to take on the awesome enterprise. Through a first year of learning and growing, the staff personnel changed again and again. Finally the burden of the job rested on Don Outland (Editor in Chief) and Thomas McCabe (Pho- to Editor). The two, together with a dedi- cated core staff, spent countless hours making The 2001 the acclaimed publication that it is. This reporter salutes these two men of S.I. and their staff for an outstanding job and a lasting contribution to their school. Right:Top to Bottom; Photo Editor,Tom McCabe Assoc. Baseba 1.2.34. Bowling 1.2.3; Sophomore Class Treasurer 2: Spud Club 4 Studont Council 4 There is much to be said at the end of the year. For the seniors, it is more than one year, it is the end of an era. It is the end of four years; four good, though seemingly long years. Much has been done in those years, much has been started, much will continue in the years ahead, some will end this year. Friendships break off, some forever, some to be taken up in a totally different time and place. A yearbook is meant to be a representation of the year in pictures. However there is more to the year than football games, exams, and making speeches. There is the wild emotion of a cheering section, the embarassment of messing up a line, the thrill of victory over traditional rivals. There are hundreds of emotions and experiences that never can be captured on film or put down in words. For this reason, a yearbook is only a gentle reminder. It is not a scrapbook, personalized and specialized. That would be the ultimate goal for a yearbook, but it will never be reached. No two people remember the same events in the same way. There are those of us who will look back on this year with regret; there are many more who will look back with a quiet satisfaction. We will remember the good times, in the class- room, in the hallways, in the locker room, on the stage. Even more important are the good times away from the school, with our friends. It will be difficult to remember the sad times, the letdowns. It will be difficult because none of them lasted for long, and were always replaced with the good times. There are many questions concerning S.I. that we faced; some of them superficial, others that go straight down to the roots of the institution. Some of these will apply later in life, some will be shaded in our memories. We will remember only what we want to remember. For those who think that their time at S.l. was a waste, I ask only that they look back and try to remember the small, obscure things that were good, were fun. This, then, is the end of this yearbook, the end of this year, and the end of our time at S.l. We begin in a different world, with different friends, different studies. My only hope, as editor of the yearbook, is that my staff and I have managed to produce a book that you can use as a way back into the memories all of us have. Paul Formosa A senior, a student of S.I., and the editor of IGNATIAN 1974
