Wildcat editor Bill Bosque i student expression There seems to be a definite loss of personal individuality that takes place in high school students, not just at S.I., but everywhere. In some, the change is slight. In others, great. Nevertheless, this change callouses the person to himself, imprisoning what makes him truly unique and wonderful. Personal expression (which Inside S.l. outwardly hoped to stimulate in students) means nothing unless there is a Person behind it. The inner target of the student expression article was trying to stimulate people to analyze themselves, to see what they stand for in society, to see what they are important for, to see what they and only they can do in our world. A person must understand himself. He must experience himself from within, then act on the dictates and realization of what hehas discovered. Every person has a fantastic potential, but only a few realize this and act before it is too late. High school is the time to emerge from one's resilient cocoon of fear because as time passes this cocoon hardens, life becomes a regular path around the face of the clock interrupted only by death. Expression is the action that follows self-recognition, but the all-important first stage is inside the womb of the mind and personality. Where the basic structure of our individuality is alive and silently waiting for us to let it breathe. Mike Caldarola Mike McGrorey Bob Slattery December 12, 1967 Inside S.l. One thousand books were presented (right) to Mrs. David of the Home on February 6, 1968 by Rich Rock, Mike McGrorey, and Vic Rollandi repre- senting the Sodality of Saint Ignatius. Holy Cross tutoring Utile Sisters of tlic Poor Helpers Home Sodality president Rich Rock Something I’ve always envied was the ability of certain people to walk into a hospital or sick room, into a group of retarded children, into a hall filled with old people and be able to act as normally as they would anywhere else in the world. To see this in a person sets that person off from the rest. This forgetting of self nearly always impressed me and vastly elevated my opinion of the person who possessed it. This quality is not inherent, but rather it is one that a person develops ivithin himself, making it an even more enviable trait. It seems to be a respectful and careful everyday attitude, demanding a limitless supply of tact, [Hitience. and self-sacrifice. This has only added to my envy and respect for those who can treat everyone individually. S.I.’s Sodality has a lot to do with this attitude, because it is this very outlook upon which the whole organization rests and with which it operates. It is the basis behind which a dozen otherwise average teen-age boys prance into a stuffy room filled with rocking-chaired old people. Through it they give these often-forgotten elderly just what they want, an hour of companionship, a happy song. The same quality is more than obvious in a place like Hamilton Tool, where children whose only crime is being crippled are able to enjoy a few hours of swimming and splashing, usually testing to the peak some unknown Socialists quality of giving. When a thing is really good and really hard, I know it's more than worthwhile. Awkwardly grasping a crippled and retarded child, holding him up from the threatening waters, is not only incredibly trying, but also exceptionally Christian. It may not be rewarding—that is up to the individual. Hut it is creating enjoyment where otherwise there would be none. Giving of self is difficult. We often don't even realize our accomplishments. We go to anonymous Homes or centers because we're assigned. But we're assigned because we're Sodality members. And we're Sodality members because we want to be. So it seems, to do this is exactly what we wanted to do all along. We go; we sing with forgetful, repetitious old ladies; swim with ungrateful, helpless children; tutor the neglected; entertain the lonely. We do it often out of duty to the organization and to ourselves. We often forget that we may receive here as well as give. But we nevertheless give. sane society Hut this is expected, taken for granted. We are not self-giving, dedicated, good Sodality boys; we simply become the kid who is “supposed to tutor me every week, the boys who take us swimming on Fridays, those boys who entertain Saturday afternoons. To those of us who make up the apostolate itself, we are nothing more than volunteers whose job it is to sing, swim, teach or the like. There is much to accept, a lot of potential despair, disgust. Helping undress a wet, slippery, squirming retarded kid is a lot harder than fighting fora seat on the 2:30 bus, and a lot more demanding. And not a few give up, perhaps proving the demands made on them. Ilut the fact is that the majority return for more, bathing in neither self-esteem nor the glory of recognition, but rather remaining anonymous in an a tathetic world. This reveals the truth and the worth of the Sodality. The Sodality may not be an organization anymore. Ideally, it would not be. Hut presently it may be in an interim period. It is not uncommon for non-sodality members to be tutors at Holy Cross. It is not rare either for a particular boy with a free afternoon to amble over to a home or center just to sec what's doing''-or what needs doing. This is an ideal, and in truth S.l. 's Sodality is some distance from that degree of perfection. Hut the Sodality is made up of individuals and it is the individual who goes beyond the Croup H assignments to actually give all over again what is his own time. Such giving is appearing slowly, like cracks of individual giving in an age-old dam of obligation, in a way threatening the dam, but in another, adding to the good that the dam does. To eulogize such an organization would be foolish. It is far from dead. Another sketch has bee drawn of an age-old model, one enviably successful and far superior to its predecessors. Hut, in its very completion, it has produced a challenge to the next artist to improve upon it. The Sodality links S.l. to its purpose. To recognize this is to begin to develop a real appreciation of both beauty and awareness. The final result is a real, a conscious person, one who is aware, and who will not hurry because he is living in the present moment whith the environment which is here. To hurry is to neglect that environment and to be conscious only of something still out of sight, or of mere obstacles, or solely of oneself. The aware person is alive because he knows how he feels, where he is, and when it is. He knows that after he dies the trees will still be there, but he will not be there to look at them again, so he wants to see them now with as much poignancy as possible. Awareness breeds spontaneity, the freedom to choose and express one's feelings from the assortment available. It develops liberation, liberation from the compulsion to play games and have only the feelings one was taught to have. ion to stand for Is it worr W? Only you can decide.
