1 The study of peronality is a study of fragments. Habits and idiosyncrasies, tied together by a thin string of subjective observation, create an individual’s personality. While virtue is often said to be found in the whole man, beauty and truth are displayed equally as well in the glance of an eye, the sound of a spoken word, or in the stopped action of a photograph. Saint Ignatius High School San Francisco The attachment of the modern American to his automobile and the symbolic role played by his car with its aggressive and lubric design, its useless power, its otiose gadgetry, its consumption of fuel, which is advertised as having almost supernatural power . . . this is where the study of American mythology should begin. Meditation on the automobile, what it is used for, what it stands for — the automobile as weapon, as self-advertisement, as stage for the dating game, as a means of suicide, etc. -might lead us at once right into the heart of all contemporary American prob- lems: race, war, the crisis of marriage, the flight from reality into myth and fanaticism, the growing brutality and irrationality of American mores. It is easy to become identified with one's vocational function. When one does, he has no higher value than his services will bring on the market. One needs, first of all, to be a man. After his two-legged master, the pig is the most abundant large mammal on the face of the earth. Perhaps the time has come for a formal and conciliatory speech addressed to men and swine to- gether, beginning something like this: “There is a tide in the affairs of abundant large mammals . . A young priest was sent to preach one Sunday. He based his sermon on the gospel of the Sunday, in which Christ spoke of the two-fold commandment, love of God and love of one’s brother, which is the essence of Christian morality. The priest took occasion to point out that this commandment applied to the problem of racial segregation. He was halfway through the sermon and the gist of his remarks was becoming abundantly clear when a man stood up in the middle of the congregation and shouted angrily: I didn’t come here to listen to this kind of junk, I came to hear Mass.’’ If our generation allowed the word of God to be sharper than a two-edged sword, it might help us to see that the very hysteria of our attack on the Negro is the evidence of an uneasy conscience. You are of no use in our affluent society unless you are always just about to grasp what you never have. The Greeks were not as smart as we are. In their primitive way they put Tantalus in hell. Madison Avenue, on the contrary, would convince us that Tantalus is in heaven. It was better, he thought to fail in attempting exquisite things than to succeed in the department of the utterly contemptible. faculty I stamp club radio club I jf I ■simii ■ our town i damn yankees 38 39 40 41 the judgment day r 4« retreats I I masses turkey day [km ijtl 7 j. v. footbal I I I I cross country track diving tennis soph frosh Let the individual know the outside world more and thus know himself better. Anthony Zielinski MY DEAR GRADUATES: For 112 years Saint Ignatius High School has had just one purpose: to prepare Christian young men for positions of leadership. There is not a walk of life where an Ignatian has not gone without success. The kind of men you will be — men who know and love God; men with courage, determination and personal initiative; men who love their country — do not settle for less than excellence in themselves, in their communi- ties, or in their country. Our country, the world for that matter, needs such men as never before. H. G. Wells sums up the crisis facing mankind as follows: “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.” The faculty at Saint Ignatius, Jesuit and Laymen, men of vision and dedication, have given their all for you. They ask no reward. Your Growth and achievement is an indication that they have done their work well. Your willingness to meet the de- mands of Christian manhood and challenges of college preparatory work is a great source of inspir- ation and encouragement to all of us, but the real tests will come later. Your gratitude for all you have received at Saint Ignatius must be made man- ifest by the life you lead. You must make a difference. You can make a difference. With God’s help and your own best effort, you will make a difference. God Bless you, The Very Reverend Harry V. Carlin, S.J. THOMAS C. AVANZINO VICTOR J. ABAD MICHAEL B. BASSI graduates EUSUBIO M. Votvty 8o k«ttooll Mat 7.3 GEORGE ZOLINSKY. 734 ?7th Aye ?? 1 7954 Invdr S.l 4 Ignolion 4 Over one-thousand people were Saint Ignatius High School this year. One person worked to give the one-thousand a chance to re-live through photographs what they were. Eight people gave generously of their hands and minds to help him in his work. There were others who were there, who laughed, and who helped. Richard Robinson was the one person. Bob Mele, Bob Cooney, Vin Piantaneda, Craig Forner, Keith Forner, Lane Russell, Perf Notario, and Andy Woodd were the other eight. These nine wish to thank the one-thousand for the opportunity to have served them and to hope that they enjoy the result of their service, The Ignatian. They also wish to thank Mr. Alvernaz, S.J., Kee-Coleman Studios, Mr. Bud Bosco, Kevin Tobin, and the Inside SI staff for their generous technical and photographic assistance. St. Ignatius High School has as its goal the formation of men for the future. These men are expected to be the Christian leaders of their community and the hope of tomorrow. Whether this goal is attained on the whole or even in part cannot be measured now. One thing is certain —the measure of our accom- plishment in this world of business, ethics, no-ethics, truth, and war is no measure of our value as human beings. All too often we are told that success can be calculated by the length of our cigarettes, the cut of our clothes, the size of our bank accounts, or the marks on our transcripts. In the midst of the irrelevance around us, however, history is throwing us its final challenge. Will we ever see the challenge in the mist of misunderstanding about us? In an age of unparalleled communication, we are surrounded by people speaking empty words and hearing even less. We are moving faster every day only to continue in the same circles. I think it is time for us to stop and reflect on the true challenge set before us. There is a great emptiness in this world and it is our responsibility as men to bridge the gap. This gap is the lack of love among men. Nation fights nation while neighbor ignores neighbor. This situation has created the need for a generation of men dedicated to the ideal of creating a new society, a society in which all men may live together without fear of one another. While some may heed the call of the times by bridg- ing the gaps of loneliness and alleviating the fears, others may not. Only the MEN of S.l. will be found among those who heard that call and answered it. Richard Robinson Editor a
