ST UDENI CUIJNCII- The purpose of the student council is not only to keep law and order. but to aid the students socially also. Dances and assemb- lies constitute the social activities of the council. Everyone is familiar with their other duties. Seeing that the class exchange is carried out as quickly and as quietly as possible, taking charge of the class in the teacher's absence, cautioning those who misbehave that unless they reform, they will be called before the council are some of these duties. The student council is a link between the faculty and students. Joyce Alcorn pictured at the right, as president, guided the efforts of this year's council. This is the first edition of the CARILLON, the memory book. For years the graduat- ing classes hoped for an annual, but it seems they were not as fortunate as we, but their dreams have become our reality. Four years ago, a group of arnbitious seniors mimeogxraphe an annual, leaving spaces in whic to paste snaps. This simple but memory-filled annual had CARILLON as its title. It was agreed to retain that title for the fir st printed annual, and all those that follow here at Saint Henry. This title, CARILLON, has a melodious sound, a joyous sound. What does itmean? It designates a set of bells expressing emo- tions and announcing events. What could be more fitting for a book relating the laugh- ter and tears, the joys and sorrows of our high school days! Business managers Mildred Thaman, Joyce Alcorn, Pat Wilmhoff, Harry Lahm, and Richards Sirnms collected subscriptions and sought out patrons. Happy hearts beat high the evening of April Z1 as seniors and juniors passed through a low stone wall into an Enchanted Garden. A grassy walk, palms, and flowers transformed the gym. The basketball baskets had been changed into hang- ing baskets- of flowers. Fitting background for the orchestra was the drapes of silver and aqua, class colors of the seniors. Winning8 of their scheduled 2.6 ames, Coach Wilmhoff's boys compiled a 38.5 scoring average, anda . 308 season average. Unaccustomed to the fire of battle, their lack of experience was compensated by a fine competitive spirit. This year's squad initiated Saint Henry's first gymnasium. They won 5 ot the 12 games they played there. Hitting the nets for 258 points co-captain Jack Cahill led the scoring cfvlurnns. The flashy guard and poised captain, JackFrisch, along with cen- ter Paul Dahlenburg, played their last game for the Red and White this year. Perusal of the records discloses a poor season butthe books do not show the heart and courage the Crusaders spent in these games. Nor do the records point out how often they led at the half, only to fall in the waining minutes . C C Y C Cl 9 Q Under the guidance of the Reverend Paul Ciangetti, a sports program was in- troduced at St. Henry High School. And it was his dynamic personality that has carrie-d that humble beginning to the inclusive pro- gram we have today. Scanning the years, we find that Father Ciangetti arrived at St. Henry's in 1943. He found the only official sport inthe parish to be a Holy Name basketball team compos- ed of high school students. Father at once began the job of bringing to St. Henry an activity program of which the school could justly be proud. Today the Crusaders are actively participating in base- ball, basketball, bowling, boxing, golf, tennis, and volleyball. Under his leadership was organized the Northern Kentucky Catholic High School League. And it was Father Ciangetti who made possible the first basketball and the first boxing tournaments in this locality. He is and has been secretary of the Catholic League for five years. In ad- dition to his athletic interests, Father is the assistant pastor, religion instructor, and the personal friend and advisor of all his pupils. We, the students of Saint Henry High, are indeed fortunate in having such an energetic, youth-minded per son as Father Ciangetti, in our parish. His exemplary ways are an inspiring influence, his li e is abenediction. Standing: Dick Conradi, John Mueller, Edward Bender, fes mqn James Pophonl, Michael Cahill. First boxin team in the state is the dis- tinction hels by the Saint Henry leather pushers. Organized five years ago, the Catholic boxing league has grown into an effective organization control ing five local teams. In that time the Crusaders have been an encouraging factor toward better boxing teams an better management of them. Thanks to the energetic coaching of Harry Nuxoll, the pugilists have won the league title three times, in '45, '47, and '49, The Crusaders are in current con- tention for the league trophy and all in- dications point to a continuation of their preponderance. Dominatin the local high school golf scene has iecome an annual hap- pening for Crusader niblickers. ln the six years since the olf team's formation, they have colqected nine trophies. Six of them represent yearly N. K.C. H. S.L.championships, two are Kentucky Post trophies, and the remaining one is a K. C. award. Last year's divot diggers won eleven of their scheduled thirteen matches. The two losses inflicted upon them were at the hands of Pur- cell's Caviliers, and the Highland Blue Birds. Neither of the losses were league decisions. An except- ional team average was established by the '48-'49 play boys as they ended the entire season withacalcu- lated 82.2 blows a round. . This year's folf team has indeed a notable reputation to uphold. Play- ing a heavy schedule, including two tournaments, the Kentucky State tourney at Lexington and theKentucky Post fra? at Devou fields, our laud- able gol ers hopefully fook forward to another successful season. So run that you may obtain. . . Competitive sports present a'paradox. Victory is the goal being sought But how often have consistent victories played havoc with a winner who overestimates his athletic powers. When he enters the big game, the must game, overconfidence plays its part, and he sees the bubble, reputa- tion, burst before his eyes. Let us consider the lwser. His efforts availed him nought as he fell often, only to rise to another defeat. The record books also disfavor his efforts. With true sportsmanship he accepts the losses and goes on preparing for the next battle. He knows our greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall. Crusader teams may not have set the world afire with their victories, they have known the sting of defeat many times, but of them it must be said that in all contests they fought superbly. Boo .Ft.
