As part of getting acquainted, the girls were initiated into the G. A. A.: and even though they had to wear weird costumes, they enioyed every minute of it. One of their first social events was the Freshmen Return, which was very successful. In their sophomore year, the Class of '55 had a new class advisor who took Miss Crary's place. She was Mrs. Claudine Liati, who for two years was a great help in planning class activities. Her untimely death at the end of the iunior year was a great loss which was felt deeply by every member of the class. The Junior Dinner Dance was an occasion which the Class of '55 will al- ways remember, but the best event of that same year was the Senior Ball. The iuniors worked hard and made clever decorations for the theme Stairway to the Stars. This year Mrs. Jamieson, who was appointed to succeed Mrs. Liati, and ff MR. PASSALACQ UA SPRING SENIOR OFFICERS 1. PRESIDENT SECRETARY Ronnie Nickel Helene Young VICE-PRESIDENT TREASURER Marlene Wagner Rudy Yudnich Mr. Passalacqua helped extensively in the busiest year of the high school career of the Class of '55. They helped in planning the Senior Dinner, which was held on May 28, and in organizing the Senior Breakfast on the day of graduation. The Senior Sneak took place on May 9, at the Marin Town and Country Club. Although everyone came back with a bad sunburn, all had fun. Dancing in the Dark was chosen as the theme for the Junior Prom, which featured the music of Dick Peters and his orchestra. ln return the iunior class gave the Seniors a grand send-off with a very nice Senior Ball. We all remember the last day of school as one of the happiest and yet one of the saddest days that we have ever known. It was difficult to say good-bye to our friends, classmates, and teachers, and to the St. Helena High School, where we spent so many happy days. There is no way for us to show the gratitude and appreciation we feel to- ward Mr. Passalacqua, Miss Crary, Mrs. Liate, Mrs. Jamieson, and all the other teachers who have helped us so much. All we can say is Thank you, we shall do our best to justify the faith you have had in us. Two of the top reporters in the nation, Ron Nickel and Donna Bray, will be on this plane. They are on their way to Florida to cover the annual Senior Reunion of the class of '55. Stepping off the plane, the reporters are greeted by Elden Parchim and his orchestra, which has iust arrived from its world-famous tour. The reporters are then welcomed by the senator of Florida, Danny Thomas. As a pastime, Danny took up dramatics and is famous for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln. As they ride along, the reporters notice the beautiful billboards which are designed by the famous advertiser, Pat Connolly, and when they 'Finally arrive at the Cypress Gardens, we begin to show them the successes that the members of the class of '55 have achieved since their high school years. First, we see Miss Hetty Sage, who was known as Frieda Jo Measles in her school days. She owns twelve very elaborate Riverview hotels throughout the states. Under the shade of a cy- press tree, we find Virginia Salazar reading her latest best-seller, Gone With the Breeze. Peggy Cavness, as you might have guessed, is now mar- ried. Peggy wanted to bring her children, but they couldn't all fit in their station wagon, so she had to leave them home with her husband. Over to our right, we notice a little patch of smog, and in it are Mary Jane Britton and J. Gable, still arguing. What about? Well, J. hap- pened to foul up the wires in every room of Mary Jane's beautiful mansion, built for her by her wealthy husband. Of course, it really doesn't matter because she has mansions in every other state. We pass Dee Ann Wattenburger, who is walking by with her French Poodle Pierre, which was a gift to her from the French Count and Countess Bu Bu. Dee Ann plans parties so well that she has become very popular among party-going celebrities. Here comes one of those celebrities now, the great movie producer, Helene Young. She is making a movie of our reunion. Up the path is Marilyn Shurtz, the inventer of the Freck-Mo Cream, which removes freckles and moles. She has her laboratory on Hollywood and Vine. Anita Ghiringhelli, who has become a very successful dog specialist, has produced a new senior type of breed, the C informed that Alice P will be late to the reu cerning Mr. Passalacc who is still popping though, he is known c Here is J. Jim, who is known as the Lone Stranger, comes trotting by on his horse looking very happy, probably because he iust finished a movie, The Life of Jim Kinyon. We must turn the radio to station URAQT, where Al Montano is singing the song Panada that made him famous. Treva Barber, the world famous clothes de- signer, has taken over Dior's position. The fashion for the summer is Burmuda shorts and midriffs. ln the winter, the fashion is Long Johns. Now we meet Sgt. Joe Warnock, who is sta- tioned at Fort Ord. Every year he comes to SHHS to pep up the seniors and encourage them to en- list. Marlene Wagner is working at the St. Helena Sanitarium. She puts people on diets or stuffs them with goodies if they are skinny. Marlene is a dietition and surely knows her business. Mar- tha Ferrero is training at Oakland hospital. As soon as she finishes training, she will get a per- manent iob caring for Mrs. Jamieson's second period iudo class. Donny Thomas iust flew in from Washing- ton, D. C. He is a prospering young lawyer whose principal task is that of writing speeches for Senator Joseph McCarthy. Dick Milat, now one of the greatest artists of his time, is working on a device to help him get his homework in on time. He is still trying to get through Senior English. Joel Edington is taller now-five feet, eight inches, to be exact. He in- vented a formula for growing. lt stretches your molecules Cl hope you know what a molecule isl. Next he should invent something to shrink peo- ple. Many would appreciate that also. Stanley Potter is still living in Pope Valley but is doing iust as well as the rest of the class. He is manager of the famous Pope Valley Rodeo. There is such a crowd at the rodeos that Pope Valley is too small to hold all the people who at- tend. Joe Callizo, a professor at Santa Clara, owns a line of motels at Pope Valley. Between Stanley and Joe, Pope Valley is really iumping. The class of '55 has been very successful, and it is hoped that the reporters will realize that it is due to the training they received at SHHS. There is a bell ringing and everyone seems to be running someplace. The seniors are finally getting together and everyone looks very happy to see one another. The theme song The High and the Mighty was sung to end this happy reunion of the class of '55. There is always sadness in parting, but there is also the promise of new and thrilling friendships and experiences in the future. Your choice of marriage, a career, or college will bring with it failures as well as successes. We have no doubt in our minds that your failures will be few and your successes many, and in bidding farewell to you, the seniors of 1955, may we wish you luck and success in everything you do. senior farewell We, the Class cf 1955, must now say goodbye to St. Helena High School, to our teachers, and to our classmates. lt hardly seems possible that we are about to leave the school that was a part of us for four wonderful years. The time has gone by so quickly. We are now about to enter into a different life. Our high school days are gone forever. Some of us will be going on to college, or w:rf:i:1g at various iobs, and still others will be getting married and raising families. Whatever we choose to do with our lives, what we have learned in high school will be our guiding light. We are deeply grateful to all the teachers who have patiently taught us. They are the ones who made us what we are. Now with great difficulty we must say goodbye, and we hope that the Class of 1955 will be remembered in the years to come. They were especially anxious to show them off, as they had ordered them the previous year. The iuniors, realizing that the responsibility of giving the Senior Ball lay with them, set out to enlarge their treasury. To achieve this goal, the class sponsored a food sale and a cake sale. In an attempt to do something different, the iuniors sold memory books and had a lemonade and sandwich sale. l.okoya Lodge, outside of Napa, was the beautiful setting unanimously chosen for the Junior Dinner Dance. The classmates met at the school, and from there they proceeded to Lokoya in a car caravan. A delicious dinner was enioyed in a dining room overlooking Napa Valley, and later, dancing brought the evening to a wonderful climax. The iuniors greatly appreciated the Junior Prom given in their honor by the senior class. This event will long be remembered. TJ show their appreciation, the iuniors gave a beautiful Senior Ball on the night of graduation. The schedule of social events was brought to a close by a class picnic at Vichy Springs. Making plans for an extensive sight-seeing tour of Grand Canyon, Yel- Iowstone National Park, and other places of in- terest was their main obiective for the year. The class has planned to make this trip during the Easter vacation of 1956. A candy sale, a scrap- metal drive, and concessions at various games were among the ways the class earned money to 'finance the trip. The number one social event of the year for the sophomores was the Sophomore Hop. Spring- time in Venice was cleverly carried out as the theme of this dance. Another of the high points of the year was the selecting of class rings. Each sophomore class looks forward to picking out their class rings, as it marks the half-way point of their high school careers. To climax a very successful year, the class enjoyed a fun-packed picnic which included swim- ming, tennis, and other activities. .loan Bartolucci Evelyn Bellani Bob Bianchi Jack Bianco Evelyn Biter Del Britton Norma Brown Robert Collins Ray Calhoun Arlene Cox David Cox Tom Farris Elaine Fisher Beverly Foss Bill Hamilton Jane Hammaker Nadine Hardin Donald Haus Alice Hodge Rowena Hodge . ..,M.,, -W , I gs, X .E F I ii.. x Q . , if rf' ii 1 Ft 'dis use vi, r Kay Gordon Mary Geiger Margaret Hinch Mike Klarner Mike Jones Barbara Jones Jack Herrod Lorelie Hunt Janet lngols Pat Mallory Carmen Marcus Rosalie Martinelli Darlene Moore Siena Mondavi Becky Monfano Virginia Myers Betty McDaniel Elgie Neil Betty Pavon Robert Penoli Ruby Penoli Ralph Perez Penny Price Ruth Potter Marilyn Slavens Marianna Snyder Sue Thomas Sandra Valentine Hap Vasconi Margaret Vieira Margaret Venable Gayle Young Donna Younggreen sf if! ,ite I , , Q E ii- 5 ,.. rw bv- Q ef 51:50-iw fx it -' fx a R y V. A. A. The required dress for this occasion was tight skirts and sweaters, high-heels, and bobby- soxs. Meeting in town, the girls were escorted by their big sisters to the school where an evening of fun was enjoyed by all. The traditional Freshman Reception was given by the Student Body to welcome the newcomers. This dance was the beginning of high school social life for the freshmen. Among the activities for the year were selling refreshments at several games and a class trip to San Francisco on March 28, 1955. This play proved to be weird and fantastic, as a good ghost story should be. At Christmas time, a large audience enjoyed The Bird's Christmas Carol, and on Lincoln's birthday, two scenes from a five-act play commemorating the life of Abraham Lincoln were presented. The Spring play, Too Much Springtime, was given on May 27. This ended a year of fun and learning for the drama class under the able direction of Miss Voorhees. Their first activity, marching in the Harvest Festival Parade, was crowned with MR. LEE a trophy. Later, clever routines were worked out and presented at the football games. The band had high hopes of acquiring enough money for new uniforms this year, and with the aid of the newly organized Band Boosters Club, comprised of the parents of the band members, a large sum of money was raised. The P.-T. A. also helped by sponsoring the Red Barn Hoedown, a very successful variety show. Band Day, which was in Berkeley, was a new experience. The affair was attended by many high school bands throughout the entire state of California. While some of the iunior and senior members represented the band at the Pacific Music Clinic at Stock- ton, on February 5, the rest of the band played for the dedication of St. Helena's new city hall. The last two traveling events for the band were th? Cal-Aggie Picnic Day at Davis and a Music Day at San Jose State College. A concert in May, the profits from which were also used for the purchase of uniforms, was the last fund raising project of the year. Band activities ended on a happy note with the playing of the traditional Pomp and Circumstance as the seniors marched to their graduation exercises. BAND MEMBERS I. Daniels, D. Keller, N. Hardin, C. With great eagerness the girls were interested in carry- ing their rallies through the track and baseball seasons. A great deal of planning on the part of the yell leaders is required to make student activities a success, and Lenore and Janet are to be congratulated on a job well done. Similar to the outfits of previous years, red and white pleated skirts and white sweaters with Block S's made the girls one of the best rlresied yell-leading teams in the league. From then on they seemed to have the confidence needed to hand a 14-0 defeat to Santa Rosa and a 13-O defea to Lakeport. The first league game was against Tomales. lt seemed as if the Saints couldn't be stopped as thej rolled on to a 26-6 victory. The second league game brought the traditional rivalry between St. Helenc and Calistoga. Going into the game both teams had an excellent record. In the first half of the game the Saints scored two touchdowns but failed to make either conversion. In the second half, Calistogi scored two touchdowns and made both conversionz, thus the Saints lost 14-12. In the final game of league play, a revengeful St. Helena team, fighting for a comeback, defeated Clo verdale 40-0, making the Sain't record for the season five wins and three losses. Although they won only one game throughout the season, a practice game with Ridgeview High of Napa, they should be complimented on their fine sportsmanship and school spirit during the whole season. In spite of the fact that the A's had poor luck with their games, a marked improvement was noticed after a member of the Philadelphia Colored Giants coached them on a number of playing techniques. The team was not discouraged or disheartened by their losses but kept up their fight which the rooters and the band supported with their yells and songs. Six of the nine team members will return to play next year. With their demonstrated determination to win and some good luck, they should make a fine team. DOUG KELLER, 56 MR. The first big league victory for the team was the defeat of the Calistoga Wildcats by a score of 39-31. Traveling to Geyserville the following week, the B's fell victim to the small court, and before they could become accustomed to it, they were defeated 44-31. Although they tried hard, in the next game nothing went right for the Saints, and they lost to Tomales 47-28. Nevertheless, with high spirits and determina- tion to break their losing streak, the Saints defeated the Clover- dale Eagles by one point in one of the best played games of the season. Their recent victory fresh in mind, the Saints played a very fine game on their second encounter with Tomales, but lost in the final minutes of the game by a close score of 33-37. Calis- toga, unhappy with the defeat handed them by St. Helena in the first league game, came back to win 35-28. With great deter- mination to win and the advantage of playing on the home court, the Saints easily defeated Geyserville by a score of 42-34. Although the Saints were defeated by Cloverdale 37-27 in their last league game, they displayed good team work and an un- broken spirit. RICH SIMPSON, 58 MR. The St. Helena C basketball team started its pre-league sched- ule by playing Sonoma. Out for practice for only one week, the team held together surprisingly and came out on top 30-22. Traveling to Geyserville the following Friday, the C's won another victory 28-15. On Tuesday of the next week, the C's went to Healdsburg for their final practice game, but it seemed that the ball iust wouldn't go through the hoop for St. Helena, however, Healds- burg showed good form and the Saints were defeated 36-22. The C team opened its league play on October 14, by meeting Tomales on the St. Helena court. The Saints jumped off to a good start by making an early ten points, with an additional fifteen points during the second quarter, the score at the half stood 25-6. When the game resumed for the second half, the Saints slowed down their tactics and tried to work the ball for control instead of points. At the sound of the final buzzer, the Saints emerged victorious by a score of 36-'l2. For their second league game the Saints traveled to Calistoga on October 21. This game was much like the previous Tomales game, but in parts the Saints dropped their guard and played somewhat sloppily, however, they won 37-17. On the following Friday, the victim of the Saints' C team was Geyserville, whom they had defeated in a previous practice game. The Saints rolled up the points, whereas Geyserville seemed very inactive in this department. The final score was 60 for St. Helena and 12 for Geyserville. On Friday, November 5, the C's headed for Cloverdale and the championship game, but a 50-26 score in favor of Clover- dale dealt the Saints their first league loss at the price of the championship, however, the members of the C basketball team felt they had had a good year. For the first two practice games, which were played against two Napa teams, the Saints divided into two teams so that everyone had a chance to play. The first home game, against Sonoma, ended in defeat for the Saints, and although the team outhit their opponents, their failure to win was due to costly errors. ln the next practice game, the Saints traveled to Healdsburg, where they were defeated by a score of 20-6. The last practice game was with Santa Rosa's Junior Varsity. The Saints got off to a bad start, and by the time they had recovered at the end of the first inning, Santa Rosa had scored ten runs. St. Helena scored six runs in the remainder of the game while Santa Rosa scored two, making the final score T2 to 6. The beginning of the league season opened with Tomales defeating St. Helena 16-T. Spirited by the hope of winning the next game, the Saints traveled to Calistoga to meet their rivals. Once again the Saints were disappointed, as the final score was 8-0. When the Saints played Geyserville, they had hopes of changing their league standing, but the team lust cJuldn't seem to hold the opponents back, and at the end of the ninth inning, the game ended with a sco 'e of ll-O. The Safnts finally tasted victory when at the end of tdeir game with Cloverdale on Carpy Field, the score was T3-6. This gave the Saints a tie for third place it the league with one win and three losses. At the time this article was written the season was nat yet over, but was hoped that the Saints would have the best of luck in the games to follow. HAP VASCONI JOHNNY CASARES DEL BRITTON MR. This year the new idea of intramural sports was introduced to give the girls the opportunity to earn the needed points. The girls wishing to participate in the intramural sports were divided into teams, points were awarded in accordance with the number of games won. At the end of each sports season the girls elected class teams that played off and then elected an honorary school team made up of girls from each class. For entertainment at one of the rallies, the school volleyball team played against a team made up of faculty members. The girls are to be congratulated on their fine sportsmanship and on their willingness to participate in volleyball, basketball, and baseball which were featured in the respective seasons throughout the year. The social activities began on December I3 with a dance, Winter Fantas , which gave the newcomers and the seventh raders, a Y 9 chance to become better acquainted. This year the iunior high participated more extensively in sports. Two basketball teams of seventh and eighth grade boys were organized, and both teams had a good season, the B's winning all but two games and the A's losing only one. The girls also enioyed a successful year of sports. On March 12, the eighth grade girls were invited to a playday in Napa. Girls from Petaluma and Sonoma also at- tended, and a day of sports was enioyed by all. The Junior High Honor Roll Society, had a very pleasant day in San Francisco on May II. The highlights of the trip were a cruise on the bay, a tour of China Town conducted by a Chinese actor, and a visit to Fisherman's Wharf. Vichy Springs in Napa was the choice made by the class for their picnic on May I8. The class enioyed their last activity of the year with a day of swimming and games. They found that their classes were very different from what they had been previously. Spending the first several weeks getting acquainted with the'r teachers and their new friends, the students soon found that the system wasn't as complicated as it had first appeared. During the second semester, the seventh grade gave their first dance. Basing their theme on Valentine's Day, they organized a very nice dance. The class invited the eighth grade and a good time was enjoyed by the entire Junior High. ln the way of sports, the girls attended a playday iw Napa. This trip was educational, as well as recre- ational, helping the girls to meet people with a feeiing of ease. On the night of the Public Schools Week program, a number of the seventh grade boys participated in a tumbling act. On May ll, twelve seventh graders, with a grade average of B, traveled to San Francisco on the Honor Roll trip and enjoyed a cruise on the bay, lunch ai the Maritime Museum, and a tour of China Town during the afternoon. The last social event of the year for the seventh graders was their class picnic on May 26.
