WHAT THE WALRUS SAID
The time has come the walrus said
To talk of many things
Of uniors Proms and Latin prose
Of blocks and Senior rings
That IS to say he went on about who s who and whats what at St Helena
High School I dropped in there the other day its a pretty vine covered ston
building set back from the highway among gre n law ns and oak trees
When I got there it was quiet at least comparatively so but suddenly a band
burst forth in a tuneful march I peeked into the hall from which the music was
coming and ah' what an inspiring sight How those trumpeters puff dl And
how the drummers pounded' With what gracefully flowing motions the band leader g s
tlculatedl But the trombones I am seriously considering enrolling in the St Helena
High School 1f only for th privilege of playmg a trombone in the band' Imagine
the bliss of being able to produce by simply moving a tube back and forth
that delightful ooo oo ooo sound characteristic of the well known Trombophobia
When the rafters had stopped reverberatmg and the last echoes had dl d away
I was startled by sudden squeals from outside But on looking out the window all
I could see were som girls in abbreviated apparel playing a game with a ball
They were in two groups with a net between them but what there was to scream
about I couldn t see So I went down the hall
were going on Each student had a little black instrument in front of him fthough
whether it was for musical or mechanical purp ses I could not discern, He poked
the keys of this instrument at a great rate making sheets of pap r go back and
forth The room was filled with a steady hum punctuated by a multitude of
little bell sounds Above this hum occasionally other sounds were audible th
voice of the instructor c ntinially admonishmg his class to try for accuracy rather
than speed and a brown haired girl with a round face saying One more erro
and I ll go nuts' I hurried out befor that happened
Ar this moment a delectable odor reached my nostrils I decided to follow my
nose which led me downstairs to a large sunny room where students were at work
in th kitchenettes The windows revealed a green landscap the atmosphere in
side was one of busy cooperatlon Y s indeed it was a charming place I thought
to myself as the last bit of lemon pie which a freckled brunette damsel had offered
1ne slid down my throat
At int rvals during the morning bells rang and doors opened up and down
the halls from which torrents of noisy students issued Like parts of a kaleidoscopic
pattern they arranged themselves with each bell finally settling down with the
last to stay put for another hour
In a room at the other end of the hall someone was kicking around the wheel of
a strang contraption and doing something at the top of a shaft with what loo td
