1 93 01 Run I n 1 n ful ruff u Ill s L 1 N H llfll ron 1 m 1 11 11 1 THE BAND Three years ago for the flrst tlme ln th hxstory of our school a band was or gamzed under the leadershxp of Mr Clllford Anderson It has proved to be a success from the standpoint of the members of the band and th lxstenxng publxc The band, under the leadershlp of Mr Nemo Debely was one of the most successful classes IH school It gave conc rts throughout the wmter and durlng the summer The first concert was made up of SClCCt1ODS of a more slmple type but as t1me passed the band progressed rapidly and mn the later concerts It played more dlfhcult numbers wrltten by more modern and known composers A most successful concert was held at the St Helena Grammar School Aud1 torlum IH March, and was attended by a very apprec1at1ve audlence On Aprxl 21 the band took part 1n Publlc Schools Week w1th a brlllxant concert, whrch was followed by the outdoor concert 1n May In such entertalnments as the Commence ment exercls s, the Sprlng Flower Show, and the Football Players banquet at Hotel St Helena, the band took an active part One of the outstanding features of the band programs has been the COIHIC group, The German Band, otherwlse called The Hungry FIVE We hear that a lully bllly quartet w1ll entertam us m the future JOE DE LAzzAR page hvenly nine ' ?7ilQ,.1?A-frfl.f1' valf Q-,:Ff5i'f.r7'Q,: - . 5 A 4- '- T T 1 ': ., fliwllwl. fl, Iimlllu-x'fu1'1l, l'. and Mr Creary the pr1nc1pal and edlted by Elwood McCabe was a one page pLll3l1CaI1OIl called the Szluerado The news was prmted 1n two columns on mne by twelxe paper Two days aft r the first ed1t1on was publlshed two paves were prmted On that day the Student Body electlon was featured and hand sketches of both presldentxal candldates appeared on the front pages Th slcetchlng was done bv Edtth Gaylord and although she was not a member of the class her cartoon appeared regularly She was appoxnted art edltor As the buddmg JOLlI'I13llSIS b came more used to the asstgnments faclng them two page edxtlons became more and more common In the mtddle of April the style of the paper was changed and four small pages were prmted lnstead of two large sheets Thls tmproved the appearanc of the paper and made It look more llke the standard metropohtan Journals The Stu dent Body cooperated wxth the Board of Trustees 1n financing thls project u1te a furor was raxsed around the campus when a VOICE of the Campus column was added as some very bombastlc letters cam m to the edltor A suggestlon box was placed outslde the press room and much constructlve as well as destruct1ve cr1t1c1sm was leveled at the paper and the m mbers of the Student Body On March 6 as a result of a contest conducted by the ournaltsm Class 1n order to get a more art1st1c and approprlate headmg the name of the paper was changed to the Dazly Szlverado On March 12 five hundred copies of The Dazly Szlverado were prmted advertls 1ng the champxonshlp basketball game wlth Tomal s and were d1str1buted through out the town The papers xssued by the class have been very 1nterest1ng and have helped to bring about a renalssanc ln school spxrtt The paper IS somethmg new IH hxgh school Journalxsm and the students of St Helena I-hgh should be proud of If Mxss Hahman readlng Then came the great dragon belchlng forth' Grant Calrns Dldn t he excuse h1mself9 The Freshman glrls never go 1n for pett1ng at a dance They go out for Mlss Sugars Do any of you know how to prepare cold botled ham Adolph Oh that s ham boiled 1n cold water 1sn t xt? oe De Lazzar Im wrttmg a bool: under an assumed name Charles Aqulstapace Really?
