On the eighth of December 18511, Pope Pius lX solemnly pro claimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Mother of God. Less than four years later. the Blessed Virgin herself in a series of eighteen apparitions, confirmed Her new title to Berna- dette Soubirous near the town of Lourdes. Her words of confirmation were simple, as they should be, coming from the Mother of the Man who spoke in a simple, universal tongue. I am the Immaculate Conception. With the passing of years. man has tended to identify himself ever more closely with a world of increasingly mechanized cultures. The economic, political and social aspects of any civilization are interdependent, and therefore inseparable. So then, as the pace of our economies has quickened, so too has the pace in the social and political arenas. Mechanization and speed have bred materialism, and at the same time have tended to relegate God to a position of comparative un- importance in a world where only the practical merits concern. God is both the Giver and Taker of life. Indeed, therefore, He is Life itself. ci ,. .5-.fv-' 3-0 -S'6'J'-I'-flf' 9 f .f.z'J.f1--f '- fl r W o H 'I 57 CA X 4? ,SF Q43 JL: 'few 5. And on that day which most certainly will come for all of us when we stand before our Creator to hear His final judgment, how com- forting will be the words, should He say- 0h yes, My Mother spoke to Me about you. . Whichever field one chooses to ex- amine, be it literature, art, or for our purpose, teaching, the maxim holds true. The 1958 Helenian is hereby dedi- cated to such a group. Our lay teachers, through their per- sonal interest in the students and their willingness to give of their own time, experience and Catholic philoso- phy do indeed distinguish themselves, and thereby elicit our deep respect and gratitude. 421 5612636 AK'Q:xn'Hk 1 'N ,LS . A principal constituent of the Catholic Forensic League, it claims long hours of practice and consistent effort as the secrets to success. Long tedious hours of re- hearsals are necessary before the delivery of a well- polished speech. The Forum has reaped the harvest of another fruitful season, capturing medals, trophies, and other honors in several oratorical competitions held throughout the city this past year. Largely responsible for the overwhelming good fortune of the Forum is its energetic moderator, Bro. Stephen Luke, and coemoderator, Mr. William McKeough. Bro. Stephen has trained each member in the necessities and strategies of successful public speaking. With tireless perseverence, he has seen his group grow into one of the school's most prized organizations. -.ty Dick Uhl and Bob Kuhlkin receive well F deserved awards. Contained within, we have our attempts to recapture familiar friends and memorable events and to present them in such a way as to bring back fond memories of blissful occurrences whenever we glance back through its pages. By virtue of their prominent position in education, the annual annual publication is dedicated to the Lay Faculty. Appropriately enough, the theme pertains to the centennial of the apparition of our Blessed Mother to St. Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes.
