11151 The Forensic group at St. Helena has grown by leaps and bounds under the excellent coaching of Brother Stephen Luke and Mr. Griffin. A large part of the success of the group is due to their efforts. Behind every speech there is a tremendous amount of preparation. Once a topic has been picked and the discourse prepared, the presentation of the speech must be organized. Here is where the coach has an important role. Brother has taught the boys the many tricks of public speaking by which any boy in the group is able to stimulate and maintain the attention of the audience before which he is appearing. The group is well known throughout the forensic league and invitations are constantly coming in asking for teams to be sent to the many tournaments held annually. One of the better known speakers is james Frail, who has placed third in the American Legion Oratory Contest. Another up and coming speaker is james Thornton. jimmy has won recognition in the Na- tional Brotherhood Week Oratory Contest. He has avg Lynch look for his cue . . . F QRUM defeated speakers from Hayes, All Hallows, and Tol- entine in open competition in which he was the only junior. He also placed fourth in the journal American Oratorical Contest. Frail, Thornton and Englert proved tough com- petition in the Catholic Forensic League Tournament, ranking among the winners of all Catholic high schools. Debating received a slow start, but now the young debators are ready for action. They are the first to admit the difficulty in speaking before a crowd. As the verse puts itg Witlm your knees a-knockin' Your hands a-sweatin, Your voice refusin' to work. But they have overcome all obstacles and have won fame and glory for their school. These boys can well be proud of the recognition they have won. Wluen they leave Saint Helena's they will leave able to express themselves clearly and easily, anywhere - a valuable asset in every walk of life. First Row: R. Englert, j. Dooley, j. Whittle, R.
