C ING EREMONY' On the Feast of the Holy Rosary, October 7, nearly one hundred and twenty seniors received their senior rings in a solemn ceremony in the school chapel. Monsignor Arthur Scanlan blessed and distributed the rings and then spoke to the seniors and their parents concerning the history of the ring and its significance. He mentioned that the ring was a symbol which the senior should carry into later life, a symbol of our Catholic education. Furthermore he reminded the seniors who wear these rings that they had certain obligations. He outlined what these obligations were and what they mean to the student. The ceremony was concluded with Benediction of the Blessed Sacra- ment. Led by Brother Damian Victor, a choir con- sisting of members of the faculty sang at Benediction. In concluding the memorable and enjoyable evening, the seniors and their parents partook of the refresh- ments served in the school cafeteria. To the seniors the reception of their rings meant that the culmina- tion of their high school careers was drawing ever closer. To the parents it especially dignified the real- ization of dreams and hopes - their sons had attained a good Catholic education, a Marist education, one that would lead them to jesus through Mary. james Mulvey receives his senior ring from Monsignor as Brother james and Brother Christopher look on. 144,45 , .-44-M Q... SQDALTEFY Again this year, as in preceding years, the tre- mendous work of the Sodality for the spiritual wel- fare of its members, can be seen. In this fourth year of existence, the Sodality in St. Helena's has grown to such overwhelming proportions, that is was de- cided by the moderators, Bro. Daniel Andrew and Bro. Stephen Laurence, to divide the group into the Senior and junior Sodalities respectively. In addition to its usual activities, such as the Food Drive for the Sisters of the Poor, and participation in the annual Retreat and May Devotions, the So- dality has added many new projects to its ever- growing curriculum. During the Chair of Unity Oc- tave Devotions, jan. 18-25, the Sodality led the Sill- dent body in prayers for the conversion of the world. On February 19th, 20 members of the Sodality attended Cathedral High School for the annual con- vention of the Diocesan Sodality Union. Also this year some members of the Sodality have pledged themselves, to help bring joy and happiness into hospitals caring for mentally and physically handi- capped patients. For the most part, the greatest and most admirable of the Sodality's functions is the group assistance at Mass each Saturday by all of its members. The weekly reception of communion by the Sodality as a group. has showered many blessings and benehts upon St. Helena's. Through the sodalists' presence at weekly Mass and frequent meetings of the Sodality, the member of this world organization becomes aware of the func- tions of the Sodality and his particular duties as a sodalist. Usually meetings of the Sodality are held on Thursdays. Each meeting opens with a prayer to Our Lady and closes with a hymn in honor of the Blessed Virgin. During the course of these meetings, the sodalist becomes instructed on the life of Our Lady, and his relation to the Sodality. The Queen's Work magazine is given to each member every month. This magazine is filled with stories about Our Lady, the activities of numerous Sodalities, and important prin- ciples of our Catholic faith. It is sincerely hoped, that as this present school year slowly draws to an end, the numerous activities undertaken by the Sodality may have pleased Mary, at least in some small way, and that she will return to those who have faithfully tried to serve and honor her the numerous blessings and benefits which she has at her command. As this year's senior sodalists graduate. they can look forward to assistance in every undertaking in future years. Encouraged by this year's success and progress the members of the Sodality, pledge themselves to the building of a better character and the molding of a stronger Catholic faith. A large part of the success of the group is due to their efforts. Behind every speech there is a tremendous amount of preparation. Once a topic has been picked and the discourse prepared, the presentation of the speech must be organized. Here is where the coach has an important role. Brother has taught the boys the many tricks of public speaking by which any boy in the group is able to stimulate and maintain the attention of the audience before which he is appearing. The group is well known throughout the forensic league and invitations are constantly coming in asking for teams to be sent to the many tournaments held annually. One of the better known speakers is james Frail, who has placed third in the American Legion Oratory Contest. Another up and coming speaker is james Thornton. jimmy has won recognition in the Na- tional Brotherhood Week Oratory Contest. He has avg Lynch look for his cue . . . F QRUM defeated speakers from Hayes, All Hallows, and Tol- entine in open competition in which he was the only junior. He also placed fourth in the journal American Oratorical Contest. Frail, Thornton and Englert proved tough com- petition in the Catholic Forensic League Tournament, ranking among the winners of all Catholic high schools. Debating received a slow start, but now the young debators are ready for action. They are the first to admit the difficulty in speaking before a crowd. As the verse puts itg Witlm your knees a-knockin' Your hands a-sweatin, Your voice refusin' to work. But they have overcome all obstacles and have won fame and glory for their school. These boys can well be proud of the recognition they have won. Named the Genesians in honor of St. Genesius, the patron of actors, the keynote of the club has always been superb perform- ance. Prior to 1955-1956, the Genesians were moderated by Bro. Francis Thomas who directed three excellent productions, Brother Or- chid, Room Service, and Arsenic and Old Lace. The present mod- erator, Brother Stephen Damian, will direct the popular comical in- terpretation of a POW' camp. Sta- lag l7. ln addition to providing social and dramatic entertainment, the Genesians also strive to provide for the cultural development of its members, Through dramatic in- terpretation on the stage, an interest and an appreciation of drama is thereby cultivated. The culmination of the year's efforts takes place in the presentation of the annual play, Keen competition among the mem- bers and from the students who audition produce a splendid cast. GLEE LQQE One of the highlights of the school vear is the annual concert presented bv Brother Damian Victor and his glee club. This years concert proved. to be especially enjoyable combining for the rirst time the talents of the bovs' and girls' departments. A wonderful rendition of the great musical Okla- homa started in rehearsal about the first vveek of October. The manv months of practice were necessary to produce a top notch performance. The seven girls were a welcomed and needed addi- tion supplying very beautiful head voices. Brother Damian said the amalgamation proved enjoyable to all concerned. An ensemble of some 60 voices were heard among which were such enduring soloists as Brian McKeon. Fred Lambret and of course the seven girls, B. Darsev. J. Gereghtv. M. Lackner. B. O'Keefe, M. Peappert. D. Sharp. and C. Veccarelli. Though everyone concerned put in long hours of practice. they all agreed that the pleasure of ap- pearing on stage was more than worth the effort. Ba. Founded by Bro. Paul Wilfred, it is presently moderated by Bro. Philip Richard and Bro. joseph Gregory. The student officers are Marc Labelle, G. Gomes and P. Eastman. The students learn to construct simple sets and to send and receive radio messages. There is abundant opportunity to do lab work supervised by a faculty moderator. Mem- bers who are well versed in the subject are able to apply for one of the Federal Communications Commission's three amateur licenses: novice, technician or general. In addition to the expert advice of the faculty moderators, there are also available some of the finest textbooks and periodicals. All of these things make membership in the Radio Club a rich and rewarding experience. You're on the air. Delving into the Held of electronics. pm G S. On the eve of Ascension Thurs- day, May 9, the graduating class of 1956 attended the fourth annual Senior Prom. The evening started at eight o'clock with a catered dinner. After dining the seventy couples danced to the music of the West- chester Collegians until eleven o'clock when the choice of the Queen of the Prom was made. Martin Galley saw his partner, Frances Dwan, elect- ed to that honor. During the evening Monsignor Scanlan blessed a rosary bracelet which was presented to each of the girls. From April 30th to May 3rd, St. Helena's Dramatic Society, the Genesians, presented their fourth annual three act play. This year's presentation was Stalug 17, which had a successful run on Broadway and was made into a hilarious motion picture. The Genesian production climaxed many months of hard work and practice and upheld the Sociery's long line of previous triumphs. The plot concerns a group of American airmen held in a German prisoner of war camp in 1944. It appears that the Gestapo knows more than it should due to the efforts of a spy planted in one of the barracks. The peak of action is reached when the spy is revealed and a downed Hier escapes from the Nazis. James Thornton played the lead role of Sefton, a sullen young men who is considered the barrack's heel but later be- comes the hero. john McKessy portrayed the spy and john Murphy, with Michael Parker and Frank Fata played the bar- rack'c clown and his stooge, respectively. Richard McCoppin was seen as the Man of Many Faces. For their efforts Thorn- ton and McCoppin received the Society's Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Awards. jr- gifs N ' jk? gelflefi '!?:':s, N if -9 i f, 'E ,Q Lana reaenl fe ii f Vi if Y The school Glee Club presented their second Feftizvzl of Song, in a Rodgers and Hammerstein review on May 20, 21, 22, 25, in the high school gymnasium. The weather was fine and for al- most everyone on board things seemed to be going their way, The trip to Rye's playland was most pleasant, as could be determined from the happy voices and dancing feet of the Helenians. But the day had just started when at 11:30 A.M. the boat docked and the chattering multitude streamed forth from the vessel, each thinking of how he would spend the day. There were amusements such as the thrilling roller coaster and the ever popular bubble bounce to go on, games of chance to try one's luck at and even swim- ming to keep everybody happy. The time spent at Rye seemed to be just one big whirlwind of happiness and when the Helenians started back for the boat each wore a smile of contentment on his face. 9 1 vi nigd i 4 it 2 Ira 'YD 'T ' c all! The indoor track season started with a bang when a highly spirited St. Helena's two mile relay team composed of Matt Diomede, R. McDonough, McCartney and T. McKinley broke the novice with lst place gold medals and in so doing shaved ten seconds from the precious meet record. The team continued its torrid pace when in the Fordham Relays lid Murphy 5' l I , Mayo Smith 5' S , and Mike Marino 4' 9 jumped their way to lst place and carried back to St. Helenas its first track trophy. ln the Bronx-Manhattan and Westchester meet Ed Murphy show- ed his skill once more by copping lst place with a jump of 5' 9 . Also in the B. M. VU. Tom McKinley strided, with relative ease, to lst place medal in the junior 880 yard run. V. Poisella, F. Fata, W. Caldwell and M.
