With only two years of experience, St. Helena's track team won thirty-one medals this past year. Twenty of these were won during the indoor season, all by relay teams. Our cross-country runners netted us five medals and the outdoor squad captured four medals in the entire season. Two awards were won in the indoor Held by our high-jumpers. j. Mazzolla, j. McFadden, R. Larkin, and W. Walsh comprised a winning midget team by placing second in the Bronx-Manhattan-Westchester Meet at Mount St. Michael. The second victorious relay team was the junior squad of R. Donohue, T. Dunning, E. Garvey and R. Lee which placed third in an 880 yard run at the same meet. Another dual victory took place at the CHSAA Championship Meet in Madison Square Garden. Two third place teams from St. Helena's were the midget team of R. Larkin, R. Connors, J. Mazzolla, and W. Walsh, and the sub-midget squad of D. Simpson, Dillon, j. Murray, and D. Murray. Finally, a freshman team ran to a third place vic- tory at the Stuyvesant Meet. The medals were taken home by L. Artale, F. Rheaume, R. Larkin and W. Walsh. On the field at the Bronx-Manhattan-Westchester Meet, an exciting tie for high-jump honors was our greatest victory all year. Both contestants for first place were Helenians. Mike Gleason and Frank Mohr cleared the bar at 5 feet 5 inches, enabling each to receive first-place gold medals. Mohr had not cleared over 5 feet during the entire season, but with the heat on, he and Gleason outdid themselves in a spectacular showing, Our single victory on the outdoor Cinder path was due to the efforts of the 880 yard team of Krueger, Tannert, Garvey and Davey. In cross-country races, Mike Prunty and Cliffy Dean finished victoriously in the Manhattan Prep Meet. At the Bronx-Manhattan-Westchester Meer, Dick Larkin and Dean won once again. Frank Rheaume was the only Helenian cross-country winner at the CHSAA Championship Meet. For only two years in track and but one year in the outdoor season, our team has displayed a remark- able zest to win and an encouraging amount of talent. Under the competent leadership of our coach and moderator, Brother Christopher, we feel confident that our track team will, in the future, soar to even greater heights of success.
