FORE WORD On perusing the title, THE HELENIAN, you may wonder as to its whys and wherefores. We were led to pick this name because the word itself evokes thoughts of our school and of St. Helena, our patroness. Our Patroness? Exactly who was she, and what did she do? Saint Helena, who was born about 250 A.D. in Bithynia isomc say Britainb, was the wife of Con- stantius Chlorus, an important Roman nobleman of the time. Her son was the hrst Christian emperor, Con- stantine the Great, who by the edict of Milan 65155 made Christianity the official religion of the empire. In her eightieth year she made a pilgrimage to jeru- salem, and after many hardships discovered the True Cross in a cistern on Mount Calvary. Her whole life and spirit may be epitomized as the constant, consistent struggle toward a goal, namely, the embellishment of Christianity in the Roman Empire by its recognition as the state religion, and the discovery of the True Cross. This spirit is carried over to her namesake parish by Monsignor Scanlan in his constant, consistent struggle toward bis goal, which is the education of youth from kindergarten, through high school, to college and be- yond. . . for the ultimate goal, Heaven. ..........2lL
