352- '53 HIGHLIGHTS Vmctigf Auspiciously opening the season on November 25th with a decisive victory over Dodge Vocational High School, our basketball team got off to a flying start. The following week, in a closely contested game, St. Mary's of Manhasset edged St. Helena's by a single point in the dwindling seconds of the game. After losing to both Tolentine and Regis, and beating De LaSalle, coach Kelly's boys played their best game of the season, though bowing to a strong Manhattan Prep team. This was fol- lowed by two close games which our quintet lost to St. Simon Stock and Dubois. On january 27th, the Blue and White trounced St. George. Highlighting this game was the shattering of our school record of 25 points in one game by Bob McGuire, who had previously set the mark. This new record of 27 points stood through the season. Taking to the road, our team bowed to Tolentine and went on to beat De LaSalle. Back on their home court they lost to Regis before a capacity crowd. The proceeds of the game were donated to the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund. On their final road trip, St. Helena's lost to Manhattan Prep and St. Simon Stock in two very poorly played con- tests, which prompted Coach Kelly to reorganize the team. Our next game, against St. George, marked the first appearance of the renovated team with the stars of the junior Varsity . . . Mike Mullen, Jim Finnegan, and Bill Clune. The young blood enlivened the team, as Mullen paced the scorers with 18 points, while Clune snared 15 rebounds. After winning our final games against St. George and Dodge Vocational, and losing to Dubois, our team entered Madison Square Garden against St. Mary's of Manhasset, and though they lost, they played well. The team's greatest asset throughout the season was the indomitable fighting spirit instilled in it by its coach, Bob Kelly. Bob McGuire, personifying this spirit, though small in stature was mighty big in points, aver- aging 13.5 points per game. Following Bob in points was the team's rebound expert, Cliff French, who averaged seven points per game. junior Vmttigf St. Helena's jay-Vee had a fairly successful season dur- ing the '52-'53 tourney, finishing with a record of nine wins and six losses. Throughout the season they were in the running for the CHSAA division title, losing out, however, when they were defeated by Manhattan. The mainstays of the team were: Captain Mike Mullen, Jim Finnegan, and Bill Clune, who averaged 8, 12, and 8 points respectively. Finnegan was high-scorer with 157 points in 14 games. Looking into the future, it seems likely that the team will improve with the aid of these three men. We hope that in the future our basketball teams will have the same fighting spirit that became the decisive factor in the success of this year s team 58-2' Dutlg 50-62 141- H St. Mar, 48 55 Dt LaSall Q0-is 'Iiolvnlinc R836 cVOCati0rml SH-50 4 LW F
