PO ooEL-oo S oekoo Y G AQ QP' jf, Ill -lf. THE LONG ROAD AHEAD To a freshman, the remaining years of high school take on the form of a road, . . . a very long road. And though each student has his own personal difficulties to overcome, there are several hardships of first year that are universal in their nature, as they affect all freshmen alike. As a means of illus- trating these general troubles, let us eavesdrop on two young scholars recently enrolled in St. Helena's High School, who are conversing in a school corridor during a recess. This isn't at all like what my friends told me, begins the first. High school sure is different, says the second. It's nothing like grammar school, except for the homework that is. Do you know that we had three hours of homework last night! Gee! And they say that the other three years are even harder! Well, they can't be much harder than this one, or the school wouldn't be this crowded! I wonder what ir's like to be a sophomore, muses the first, still deep in his thoughts. I can't wait 'till next year. I'm afraid you'll have to wait, remarks his friend, retain- ing his pessimistic attitude. But it does seem like a long way OH. It sure does! And how can I ever pass GEOMETRY . . . he begins when the bell rings, ending the recess, and we hear his fading voice explaining his difficulties in mathematics as they disappear around the corner of the hallway. Several months have elapsed, and the first terrible year for our friends is nearly finished, as we discover them again in the corridor. Oddly enough, the subject of their conversation is the same as that of some months ago. The first freshman is saying, I'm glad this year is almost over. Yet, it seems but a short time ago when we started school. Yes, replies the second, and pretty soon we'll be sophs. Sure, but there are three more long years ahead of us, says the first, unmercifully awakening his companion from his dreams, and bringing him back to reality. Sometimes I think that graduation will never come. But this year practically flew by, didn't it? counters the second, defending his dreams. And, he hopefully adds, the others will probably pass just as quickly. Maybe, begins the lirst, but . . . . . At this point, however, we shall generously restore their privacy to them, for I think that you now have a suflicient idea of high school, as seen through the eyes of two typical freshmen, worried, uncertain, yet curious and eager, as are all high school novices. The road ahead is long, and, like mountain-climbers just be- ginning their ascent, freshmen face a difficult path, like them, however, they may look back in proud triumph when they have reached the summit, their well-earned goal. ,fa 90 10 ftzrf-veil X 44 of 7 2 fgg?offA 'A Ae 412- 14
