lf I DREAMS OE THE FUTURE Practically every phase of life includes some unique group of elite persons who are above their fellow men, and who merit the respect of their lessers. In high school also is this true, and most of these other situations are neither as fair nor democratic as is high school when it comes to selecting this faction of elders. For the elders of a high school are, naturally, the seniors, and one has but to wait for three years and he is a senior, commanding the esteem of his underclass- men. We of the class of '54, being on the very brink of the conclusion of our three-year apprenticeship, do now most eagerly look forward to the day we will be St. Helena's Patri- cians. Though our dreams may not be exactly alike in each case, the foremost desire of every junior is to reign as a senior. These seniors are allowed extra privileges during their ten- month rule, traditions which are being handed down to their worthy receiver, for he has labored and waited patiently for his reward. Thus we dream of our future premiums. The primary aspiration of the juniors, as a body, is un- doubtedly a Senior Room, which is out-of-bounds to all except seniors, and where they are allowed to smoke and lounge about during their leisure hours. The present seniors may leave the grounds at lunch-time, and we shall inherit this right when we supplant them. This class of '54 also dreams of a section of the cafeteria for the exclusive use of the seniors, the privilege of initiating freshmen, as well as the right of ruling the entire school, faculty included, on one selected day of the year. The fulfillment of these aspirations will be ap- preciated and cherished by us, seniors-to-be. But these are only the rights and prescriptions to which we, as future seniors, feel entitled. More important is the real meaning of senior year, of which a junior also dreams. It is the completion of the most important period of a man's life, the years during which a child is transformed into a young man. juniors look forward to graduation, their day of triumph. They think fondly of their Senior Prom, which, along with graduation, is one of the most memorable incidents in their life. Oftentimes, senior year presents the last opportunity of meeting one's classmates as a group. This may account for the sad feeling of reluctance with which one leaves high school, his second home for four years, years which seem to have passed almost before they arrived. M W -K.:
