Work was stopped when the Fathers established St. Gregory's. Bottom: Sacred Heart Abbey and College prior to the disas- trous lire ol 1901. This is the cradle ot Catholicism in Oklahoma. On October 9, 1955, the Catholics of the state observed in a most demonstrative manner, the golden jubilee of the establishment of the Diocese of Oklahoma. We therefore take this occasion, signifying the great strides made by the Church in our own state as the theme for this book. We are adopting this theme to pay tribute to those stout-hearted pioneer priests and religious who have devoted their lives that we might be able to enioy the benefits of churches and schools and other religious institutions today. We call to mind that the Benedictines had come to this state thirty years before it received its first bishop. Thus they were its first resident priests and it was they who built the foundation upon which the glor- ious structure of the Church today continues to rise.
