The wing to the right is the col- lege building. The masonry at the lront is the loundation of the monastic church, which never saw completion. Work was stopped when the Fathers established St. Gregory's. Bottom: Sacred Heart Abbey and College prior to the disas- trous lire ol 1901. This is the cradle ot Catholicism in Oklahoma. On October 9, 1955, the Catholics of the state observed in a most demonstrative manner, the golden jubilee of the establishment of the Diocese of Oklahoma. We therefore take this occasion, signifying the great strides made by the Church in our own state as the theme for this book. We are adopting this theme to pay tribute to those stout-hearted pioneer priests and religious who have devoted their lives that we might be able to enioy the benefits of churches and schools and other religious institutions today. We call to mind that the Benedictines had come to this state thirty years before it received its first bishop. Thus they were its first resident priests and it was they who built the foundation upon which the glor- ious structure of the Church today continues to rise. To these and all who have labored for the salvation of souls we dedicate this book. Elisa 'i 4 J: 1- . .. . Bishop of Oklahoma City and Tulsa ' FQ?-q Fm? .J V g w ax :H - ,A Distinguished Alumnus its v i. i I t i tc z 1, :iff U. -s '-1, 14 L- 1 liz bil 1 The Most Reverend Stephen A. Leven, D.D., PhD. Auxiliary Bishop San Antonio Titular Bishop ol Bure The grace of God has indeed been fruitful in the Most Rev- erend Stephen A. Leven whose apostolic zeal, coupled with strik- ing efficiency and marked personal charm, has merited for him brilliant distinctions and mature responsibilities. His Excellency is St. Gregory's first alumnus C1920-19213 to be raised to the episcopate. Ordained priest at the age of 23 in 1928, Bishop Leven's preparatory studies were pursued in many fine institutes, the most distinguished of which was the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, to which seat of learning he was recalled in 1935 to serve as vice-rector. His Excellency filled this capacity until 1938 when the degree of doctorate of philosophy was conferred upon him avec grande distinction. Returning to Oklahoma, Bishop Leven devoted himself un- sparingly to parochial duties and other works which assumed national religious significance. While pastor of St. Francis Xavier parish, Enid, Oklahoma, he was raised to the rank of Monsignor, receiving the title of Papal Chamberlain in December 1949. In September 1955 he was pro- '7' o- .3 il, moted to the rank of Domestic Prelate. Appointed as Auxiliary to Archbishop Lucey of San Antonio and Titular Bishop of Bure, Bishop Leven was consecrated February 8, 1956, and all Okla- homa reioiced to see a native son so honored. Brief allusion must be made to the more notable accomplish- ments of this outstanding alumnus. He organized the first Na- tional lnstitute of Street Preaching and directed institutes of street preaching for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for five years. He served as National Director of the Confraternity in the U.S. from 1939 to 1940. During World War II, he was representa- tive of the Catholic Church providing for the religious needs of prisoners of war interned in Oklahoma. From 1946 until his eleva- tion to the episcopacy, he served as Spiritual Moderator of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and from 1947 he was Prosynodal Judge in the diocesan court. Oklahoma's loss, of course, is Texas' great and good gain. St. Gregory's congratulates the Lone Star state on the acquisition of a most illustrious alumnus, the Most Rev. Stephen A. Leven, D.D., Ph.D., successor of the Apostles. Freddie is being hauled down by a group ol Savages in the opener ol the season against Tecumseh. Right: Ralph Foster, Guard. Right, at cor- ner: Fred Martin. Starting the season off with a bang, the Knights rolled over the Tecumseh Savages by the score of 14-7. This, by the way, was the first time in four years that we had won the opener. To keep the ball bounc- ing, the Knights snapped up two more wins, a 27-12 victory over the Fox Redskins and a 'I4-13 decision over Chilocco. Purcell handed St. Gregory's its first defeat of the season, T8-7, but, coming back un- daunted, the Knights blanked Marquette to the tu-ne of 12-0 in the first conference game of the season. Playing before a large crowd of enthusiastic rooters, the Catholic High Irish fell victim to the Knights 40-6 in the annual homecoming game. Then, riding high on their pre- vious win, the green and white clad hurricanes flew over Holy Family 26-7. The big heartbreaker of the season was the 6-7 loss to Cascia Hall. This was the Knight's only conference loss. On the comeback trail again, the Knights blasted the St. Mary Rockets of Oklahoma City, 36-O, only to be beaten 13-26 in a non-conference tilt with Central High school of Oklahoma City. With the loss of one conference game the Knights moved into a three-way tie for the State Catholic Championship with Marquette and Cascia Hall. Highlighting the season was the first East-West All-Star game held on Thanksgiving Day for the benefit of St. Joseph's Orphanage. Having a team comprised of players from St. Gregory's, St. Mary's and Catholic High, the West, coached by Father Daniel, won the tilt over the East T8-T 3. The Eastern team was made up of players from the three Catholic high schools in Tulsa. Sixteen Knights were selected to represent St. Gregory's in this All-Star game. These were John and Jim Vosburgh, Dan Kavanaugh, Mike Scully, Marvin Brunner, Jack Krall, Bob McClendon, Hank Brad- ley, John McCullough, Freddie Martin, Tom Goodall, Bill Helean, Ernest Negrete and Joe Lee. Mike Scully was awarded a trophy for being the outstanding back of the game. ii' t l i l l fs:- r f Hank Bradley, Safety Tom Goodall, Quarterback Of, 2? :Y ly.. N J M. To our wise and industrious faculty we leave the unregretful relief that your efforts to train and guide us will not be wasted and may our future efforts prove this true. To our surging successors, the Juniors, we leave the rights and privileges that truly belong to the Seniors, that is, to reign supinely over all Gregory Land. To the plebian Sophomores, we leave a tonic, which taken systematically, will rid you by next September of Sophomoritus. For the unrefined Freshmen, we leave a warning not to follow in the footsteps of your immediate predecessors. Herewith set forth are some individual bequests to humiliated heirs: Joe Lee wills some of his giggling girls to David Gustafson. James Beaver leaves his well worn iumping rope to Joe Winters. Joe Spexarth bequests his beautiful bass vocal style to Pat Higgins. James Howard leaves his Iieutenant's iob in the C.A.P., plus 20 lbs. to Hays Smith. To John Whittington, Bob Benton wills his love of the navy. To Sam Griffin, Dennis Sheahan would like to leave all his perfumed hairclressings. Let us take leave of our personal bequest for a moment in order to mention the fact that we are graciously leaving all our private arbor-laned walks to the Seniors of next year, This privilege should be used wisely. John Vosburgh wills his basketball-bucketing ability to his brother Jim. Phil Ruscha gives his one and only man about town routine to James Burbank. To Richard Sanabia, Bob Meng leaves ye-old-barber's chair plus some old barber- shop-quartet ditties. Bob McClendon wills his gum chewing ability to anyone who desires strong chompers. Tom Stark gratuitously gives his unhurried habits to Tom Watts. To Fred Martin, Hank Bradley bequests his beloved three-little bears T-shirt. Wear it with honor, Fred. Here we would like to make another bequest, this to the ultra-fortunate Sophomores. We benignly bestow on them the privilege of attending next years Junior-Senior prom. Wow! Generous John McCullough wills his fascinating hair-style to Tom Goodall to be worn only on special occasions. Warren Koeller leaves his wide awake attendance in class to John Olden My, John, how your profs will love you! Daniel Tarzan Tellez wills his love of the out-of-doors to John Duffy. He'll have to find his own tale. To Cletus Stein Mike Scully wills his badly badgered but beautiful, football helmet. To David Langan, David Chostner leaves his sleeping seat in English IV. Bradley Helbing bequests his well-loved studyhall desk to John Zahler. George Martin wills his muddy boots and dusty saddle to Fred Franz. To Bill Lindsay, Kevin Lutz gives his ability to stay out of trouble. Ralph Foster, you lucky fellow, you get Wilfred Goevert's managing iob To the unexperienced Freshmen we relinquish from our advanced vocabulary one word. Learn the meaning of this word well. The word is girl Jim Marky bequests his identifying Texas accent to Bill Holloway. Charles Reffner bequests his printer's iob to Tommy Martin. Jack Krall wills' his hashing horrors to Wayne Ellis. Jim Hendrickson wills his mathematical ability to Cletus Mages. lt may be of some use. To Bill Eckroat a surprise package, he gets Ray Burgett librarian's iob. Marvin Brunner said to give an inch or two to Sherman McNally. Paul Jaeb, is the winner of Dan Kavanaugh's swimming trunks. Usually the last, but by no means the least, Maurice Barenberg wills his love for roller skating to Luke Howe. Schmitt goldbricking. Scully-the oiliclal iimekeeper I' it XJ' V ' . ' l 'S 'N X 5, . John Vosourgh operates a large chain of restaurants in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. He spends a good part of his time sampling the menu. Charles Reffner is editor-in-chief of the New York Times, is married and has six children. On my hop from New York to Chicago, James Howard was chief pilot on the latest ietliner. We had heavy head winds but we seemed well ballasted. Maurice Barenburg owns a world famous private detective agency while Joseph Lee is his chief detective, some say quite as shrewd as Sherlock Holmes. Wilfred Goevert is a Maryknoll Missionary in Africa.. He likes the climate and says the monkeys bring back such fond memories of St. Gregory's. Arkansas City has the honor of having Warren Koeller as mayor. Warren is a likely candi- date for governor of the state this coming election. Tom Stark has made a career of the army, he is a colonel-wears the eagles rather well, too. He was having them polished when I talked to him. Dennis Sheahan has a frog farm near Wichita: he is married and has five children. Robert Meng also lives on a farm near Wichita but has several oil wells and spends much of his spare time poaching frogs from the Sheahan puddles. James Beaver has realized his high school ambition to become a child psychol- ogist. He practices in Little Rock. Our alma mater has a new rector, Brad Helbing, who says the boys are still like they used to be back in the grand 'ole' days of '56. Ray Burgett has a prefect's iob. They say he has re-established the rule of the old iron fist. Fierce was the word used. Bob Benton is still working at Swope's in Shawnee. He really sells the gas. Champlin is considering him as a iunior partner. David Chostner lives in Seattle, Washington, where he is an electrical engineer. He moved to Seattle after marry- ing a certain Shawnee girl. Daniel Tellez inherited a fortune from a rich uncle and now spends most of his time fishing from his yacht off the coast of that lovable California. Bob McClendon won the 500 mile race at Indianapolis again this year-his fifth straight win. You've never seen such driving! In Oklahoma City Hank Bradley is publishing a daily paper. Hank complained the paper interfered with his hotroding. Phil Ruscha drives a truck between Ok- lahoma City and Sioux City, Iowa. Phil says he likes the iob very well and would never think of changing for another. He's really put on weight-was chewing tobacco when I talked to him. James Markey is a traveling Fuller brush salesman. He makes his home with wife and four children in Wichita Falls. Would you need an extra vegetable brush-I can send you one? Jim Hendrick- son is still trying to get a degree in sanitary engineering at Frank PhilIip's Col- lege in Borger, Texas. He says he is positive he could make it sometime within the next five years. Dakota Jack Krall owns a ranch in the Black Hills. He raises stock for some of the biggest rodeos in the country. You should see his boots! Dan Kavanaugh has a fine reputation as a lawyer in the big city of New York. He has taken some of the most famous cases in the past few years. I was impressed by his mustache. John McCullough plays the drums in a iazz band. He plans retiring to his farm in Sherman, Texas, in a few years. Mike Scully is a math professor at Oklahoma University - at present work- ing on a theory of numbers. Mike has been married ten years now and has five boys. George Martin is a life insurance salesman in San Antonio. His hobby is playing the clarinet on the back porch. The Cleveland Indians had Marvin Brunner as a pitcher for the past ten years. Rag Arm plans to retire at the close of this season to manage a ball club. The quiet member of our class, Kevin Lutz, entered a Trappist monastery in Nevada shortly after leaving St. Gregory's Joe Spexarth is a navy medic on board an atomic submarine. He says being St. Gregory's infirmarian had nothing to do with his joining the Navy. He was attracted by the larger size navy pills. This lovely building adds much to the campus, and Harter's is proud to have had a part in its construction by furnishing the expanded snale blocks and cast stone trim. Harter blocks are cured by the high pressure steam curing method in huge steel autoclaves. Blocks cured this Way shrink less than those cured with other methods.
