Its great function is to make men and women measure up to the stature of Christ. The raw material which the educator molds is man whole and entire, soul united to body in unity of nature, with all his faculties, natural and super-natural -- man, fallen but redeemed. ' The educand is made for heaven, his ultimate goal is God. The child must grow in the use and control of his powers -- physical, intellectual, emotional, and volitional. Parents are primarily responsible for guiding the child in developing his potentialities -- to find his way back to God and to live the way fully. Hopefully and prayerfully, parents ask the school to be co-workers with them.' They do not abdicate their rights, but ask the school for help. The religious teacher, trained in spiritual values through Novitiate years of intensive prayer, meditation, religious formation, and trained in secular knowledge at colleges and universities, stints no effort to pro- duce men and women who are Christ-centered, intelligent, cultured Catholics, healthy in mind and body, social-minded American citizens. Parishoners are to be commended for the sacrifices they have made and are making to erect and maintain a new Junior-Senior High School, placed in the care of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. May God bless the Priests, Sisters, Teachers, Parents, Parishoners, and Children. Working in peace and unity, we shall accomplish great things for the glory of God and the salvation of souls. Monsignor McCullough Rev. John Przydacz Chaplain to Sisters ,, ,, IMMACULAT E C ONCEPTION CHURCH Pioneer priest, Rev. J,S. Chaland, erected the first Catholic Church in Tyler in 1878. The present church was dedicated in 1934 by Rev. S.A. Samperi. 'In 1949 the church was renovated and redecorated, and in 1950 it was air-conditioned. The social room and kitchen in the basement of the church was remodeled in 1957 under the supervision of Msgr. E.V. McCullough. ST. GREGORY SCHOOL Bishop Lynch commissioned Rev. V. J. Wolf to formulate plans for a parochial school. The cornerstone was laid June 20, 1946. The school is named in memory of .Tustin Gregory Glasco who died in 1943. His father was a great benefactor to the school. Rev. Paul Higginbotham Teacher of Religion ST. GREGORY CONVENT T he old convent adjoining the school was inadequate, and so Rev. V. J. Wolf set plans for a new sixteen-room air-conditioned convent. The Colonial Style of the convent is the same as that of the adjacent school with an 'arched arcade connecting school, audi- torium, and convent. His Excellency, Bishop Thomas K. Gorman, dedicated the con- vent of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in January 1953. In the peaceful atmosphere of the convent chapel, in the glow of the sanctuary lamp of the King'of Kings, the School Sisters of Notre Dame find their strength to lead forward the Army of Youth entrusted to their care. In the chapel are Sisters Marie Theodore, Monica Marie, Mary Marca, Mary Clared, Mary Ursula, and Mary Lorita, principal of St. Gregory's School. Mrs. Nelda Godell, part-time volunteer secretary of St. Greg- ory's School, received her B, B, A, degree from Sam Houston State College, Huntsville, Texas. V I S U A L E D U C A T . The drill group, directed by Miss Lanell Rowell, consists of thirty-five members. Eleven members of this group belong to National Baton Twirlers Association, the oldest and largest twirling organization in the world. Each week the girls meet for one two-hour session where pre- cision dancing and marching, ballet exercises, and baton twirling is taught in an organized manner. The aim of this group is to bring recognition to the school by the group participating in parades and civic groups, to cultivate friendship among the students, to develop gracefulness and poise in each individual and, 'most important of all, to further the art of baton twirling. Miss Rowell is the former Twirler and Head Drum Major for the Famous APACHE BELLES of Tyler, Texas. Mrs. Judy LeBlanc is coach of the girls' athletic activities. Basketball practice began in October. Two games were played, both against Winona. We lost the games but a new basketball team for St. Gregory's girls was in the making. The A string was made up of Kathleen Peterschmidt, Millie Long, Kathleen Corcoran, Carol George, Joyce George and Frances Carswell. Substitutes were Carol Bieber, Mary Bouvy, Dardine Roedel, Helen K. Hesse, Sharon Bosworth and Mary A. Matachinskas. Volleyball practice began in February and the tournament will be held the latter part of March. Soft ball has been a well played sport at S. G. S, for the past three years. With past experience, it is expected that the girls will be formidable opposition for other teams. FUOTBALL Pictured here is a practice session of one of the more successful ground playing gains. Dick Stine KNO. 24D after taking a handoff from quarterback, Ronnie Hitt, comes through a quick opening hole off left tackle. The Wolverines, though a small team, had a fairly successful season, with four wins and eight losses. Some bright spots were the passing play of Ronnie Hittg the longest run of the year, 81 yards, by Dick Stine in the Chapel Hill game, the longest run from scrimmage, 69 yards,by David McNamara in the Mineola game. In the passing department Ronnie Hitt threw the largest number of completions, 15-17 against Chapel Hill, the longest pass for a touchdown was 47 yards, Stine to McNamara in the Mineola game. Ronnie Hitt led the kickers, 67 yards against Troup. John Finneran was the Iron Man of the team, playing 284 out of a possible 320 minutes. The outstanding individual game of the year was played by Robert Clark against White Oak. Pat Cooney was the team's all around linesman, while Dick-- Stine was the best all around back. Tony Brinkman with his versatility of playing just about every position on the squad was considered the most valuable team man. CBASKETB LL I-IAWKS B SQUAD T Pi typical young, green team, though not I having had a very successful season, progressed much at the close of the ' season. With the smallest A SQUAD in the history of the school, a great load was placed upon each of these youngsters. With the added burden of their scholastic requirements, daily practices, seasonal sickness, outside activities, and afternoon jobs, these basketeers had a full curriculum. It must be to their credit, not as to the team scores, or the games won or lost, but the manner of their competitive spirit and play. Clean play, sportsmanship and harmony amongst these youngsters throught the entire season is a fine example Set down for the teams of St. Gregory in the future. - Individually, Ronnie Hitt with his fine defensive play, setting up plays and personal scoring, was a mainstay of the team and a thorn in the side of every opponent St. Gregory played. Dick Stine, playing a fast break type of offense to perfection, led the team in scoring with 2.63 points, and was a scoring menace every second of the ball game. ' David McNamara and Leon Geary rounded out the top four high scorers with 154 and 125 points respectively. Little Tony Brink- man was the only individual who participated in every game of the schedule. TROPHY Ronnie Hitt accepts from Coach John P. Not pictured are Robert Clark, Pat Cooney, Tim Cooney and Gary Rogers. These Wolverines had a record of four wins and eight losses. Though a small inexperienced unit, this team proved to be versatile. Outstanding players were Ronnie Hitt, Dick Stine, Backfieldg John'Finneran and Pat Cooney, Linem en.
