THE FISI-IERMAN'S RING The . Pope's ring is made of gold with a carving of St. Peter fishing from a boat. The Pope's name is carved around the out- er edge. It is used to seal official papers. The Very Reverend Archbishop ROBERT E. LUCEY November l, I-loly Year, l95O To Saint Gerard's High School Class of l95l: It is in most challenging times that you complete your secondary education, to enter upon your life's career, or upon your higher education to prepare for a still higher walk of life. Never in all history has the world been so widely and actively mobilized into two camps. Never has the issue been so clear or the op- portunity so urgent to vindicate the Christian and American ideal of freedom under God, based on man's inviolable dignity as a creature of God. Catholic education is not merely a particular brand of education of high quality, comparable to other good brands. It is an essentially distinct formation of char- acter after the pattern of Christ the Master, which naturally results in the finest ideal of freedom under God. It is a sacred trust to be deliberately guarded. Your splendid Catholic education fits you to meet the magnificent challenge ,of the times. Be faithful to your sacred trust. Sincerely, Very Rev. John I... Markovsky, Superintendent W . ,Lk . 1' A ' f , f- A g 1 4.21 ' V ,fr t K 3 ww A 6 Wg. gg., W 'f ff Tl-IE VERY REVEREND JOSEPH L. Coach Henry Mittermayer accepted the consolation trophy that the Royal Blue Basketball Team won in the basketball tournament, Jan. 23, at the Unicorn Gym in New Braunfels, Texas. Our team beatShirtz-Cibolo by a score of 59 to 38. ff fql Ferdie Burket, with five years of experience as a basketball player, has become one of the most outstand- ing and best all around athletes that St. Gerard's has ever had. A clean and honest player, he has struggled to the top and has been awarded the outstanding honor of high point man of the year This is the starting line- upfor the 1950-'51 Royal Blues. They are left to right: Jim Burket, I... Urbanski, Dick Gawlik, Ferdie Burket, G. Ram- zinski, and in the center is Coach H. Mittermayer. Little Mimmy Burket was just wondering if some day he would be as tall and hand- some as big Dick Gawlik, Although this is his first year out for the team, he has not only made the varsity team but also the starting team. This was due to the absence of Joe Skrypek, who was undergoing an operation on his left eye. Although Joe was out for several weeks, he did play a few games at the beginning of the season. Gregory was as good a sport as could be found. He not only kept up the spirit of the team, but he was a fine player as well. Leonard Urbanski, whose picture is to the right of this column, was about the only driv- ing player the team had. Although he was a great fouling ace, he chalked up many points for those victorious scores. THE LIVING ROSARY The living rosaryis one of the most inspiring cere- monies held in St. Gerard's Church during the month of October. It is an annual event in which the high school students participate, each member a bead of the rosary. The children of the grade school attend this unusual ceremony with great de- votion.
