GERARD HIGH SCHOOL HIS HOLINESS PIUS XII Our gloriously-reigning Pontiff, Pope Pius XII, is the greatest Christian leader in the world today. Widely known is his great charity to the war-stricken peoples. Equally well known are his con- sistent efforts to combat the evils of communism and to restore peace and harmony to ki confused world. Every Catholic student is proud of the Vicar of Christ on earth. VERY REVEREND JOSEPH FLANAGAN, C. Ss. R. Our pastor, the Very Reverend joseph Flana- gan, C.Ss.R., has been an outstanding example of efficiency during the past years. His suc- cess in securing equipment for our alma mater is in evidence throughout the building, and his untiring labor in behalf of the new imposing structure now nearing completion deserves our sincerest gratitude. By his kindness at all times, his fine sense of humor, his winning personality, and, above all, by his edifying priestly character, Father Flanagan has endeared himself to the entire student body. The graduates of 1948 pledge to him their support of his work in the years to come. HIS EXCELLENCY ROBERT E. LUCEY Like the Good Shepherd Wliom he repre- sents in our great arch-diocese, the Most Rev- erend Robert E. Lucey extends his pastoral staff over his entire flock. His Excellency has done not only notable work to improve our system of Catholic education, but he has been a staunch defender of religious training for those who are not privileged to attend Catholic schools. He was a gracious host to the lfirst Regional Inter-American Congress of Christian Doctrine in October, which all high schools were permitted to attend, and from which they derived an increase of faith and a great desire to share that faith with others. For this un- usual opportunity and for our Archbishop's whole-hearted interest in all that pertains to the spiritual uplift of the youth under his care, the students are deeply grateful. Through the administration of the sacraments and through religious instruction these priests have been our friends and spiritual benefactors: Very Rev. joseph L. Flanagan C.Ss.R. Rev Wm. Grongill C.Ss.R. Rev Bernard Kalvelage C.Ss.R Rev Louis Kemmer C.Ss.R. Rev. Maurice Kennedy C.Ss.R. Rev Cyril Kierdorf C.Ss.R. Rev. Byron Krieger C.Ss.R. Rev Philip Kvasnica C.Ss.R. Rev Rev James Sullivan C.Ss.R. Leonard Wale C.Ss.R. Brother Alphonsus C.Ss.R. THE FACULTY The members of the faculty, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, have been not only our teachers in various branches of learning, but they have been our friends as well. Their one great purpose in life is the training and guidance of youth on the way that leads to eternal happiness. A generous spirit of self-sacrifice prompted them to leave all things to fol- low the greatest Teacher of all times, and this same spirit has permeated all their efforts as Catholic educators. Only those who have come under their influence can realize the value of the splendid work they have ac- complished. The members of the Class of 1948 feel that they owe their teachers a debt which they can never repay. Sister M. Augusta S.S.N.D. Science and Latin Sister M. Dorothy S.S.N.D. Besides the teaching of religion there is considerable work done by the members who help to prepare chart: which are used to make the lessons more interesting to the pupils. These helpers also mount religious pictures fo the children, who take them to their homes and thus carry Christian ideas to their families. Imparting the truths of our holy religion to the children has 'given the girls a better knowledge of their fait. and has inspired them with zeal for the great work of Catholic Action. The Confraternity is under the able supervision of Sister M. Dorothy, S.S.N.D. Mary Elizabeth Leyendecke is the president of the organization. Wx Xa i Q x-f 'l ':f . During the Christmas season, the Confraternity workers brought a little Christmas cheer in the form of candy, nuts, and toys to their lit- tle pupils. Mary Elizabeth Leyendecker, the President of the Confraternity, has been commended for her wonder- ful record of three hundred and sixty teaching hours. She is shown here with two of her pupils. tl mr W at J figs 1 li wwf H T Anne Carabin lSecret.iryj, Lois Binz tSocial Chairmanj, Doris Ploch fVice-Prefectj, Marilyn Schmidt fPrefectJ, Mary lilizabeth Leyendcclcer QTreasurerl, Florence Kadura QBIessed Virgin Chairmanl, and Rose Marion Schoppe tliucharistic Chairmanl. SODALITY The Sodality of Our Lady is the most important organization in the high school because of its direct influence on the spiritual lives ot' its members. Every sodalist realizes that membership in the Sodality is a great help toward becoming more like Mary, her model. The assembly of girls at Mass and Holy Communion on the third Sunday of every month is most inspiring. The Sodality of Our Lady is noted for its generosity. During the past year it has contributed to various char- itable organizations, including the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Boys' Town, and best of all, it has given a consider- able sum to the new school fund. Not only are the girls benefitted spiritually by membership in the Sodality, but socially as well. The various parties and dances, under the i direction of the newly or- ganized social committee, have been thoroughly en- joyed by all. Thanks are due not only to this group but to Rev. James Sullivan, C. Ss. R., spiritual director, Sister M. Augusta, S.S.N.D., mod- erator, and Marilyn Schmidt, prefect, for making this So- dality year an outstanding ORC. GERARD'S CENTURIANS The Drum and Bugle Corps, under the able leadership of its drum major, Lois Binz, and bugle major, Virginia Nolan, has had a busy and happy 1947-48 school year. The success of the Corps is largely due to its competent instructor, Lieutenant Ernest G. Fischer, and to the unit's moderators, Sister M. Dorothy and Sister M. Madaleva. During the year the Corps participated in a number of festivities, among them the Fall Festival, the Musical Festival in November, the New Year's Day Parade commemo- rating the 75th anniversary of joslce's, Laredo's Wasliington Day Parade, the annual Battle of Flowers Parade, and the Spring Carnival. On numerous occasions the Corps has received high commendation for its artistic formations, its precision, and its rhythmic music. The Club's instructor, Sister M. Madaleva, S.S.N.D., has done wonderful and successful work in teaching the girls the technique of developing good voices. No doubt some few of the members are contemplating a debut at the Metropolitan soon after graduation. Although the Club has had few opportunities to show its achievements, it has made a success of every one of its appearances. The majority of the Clubs performances have been over the radio. First, the Club presented several selections tor the program commemorating the American Cen- tenary of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. In November the Club appeared on the radio program featuring the lives of various composers. A group of the members provided the music for Midnight Mass at Brooks Field and the entire group sang Mass on Christmas morning at 'St. Gerard's Church. The organization closed its year of'activities with an appearance at the spring music recital, and with a Song Festival in May. MUSIC APPRECIATION CLUB To appreciate music is an art, and the attainment of this art is the purpose of the Music Appreciation Club. This Club meets once a week to listen to and discuss the works of the old masters and the more popular selections of the modern composers. Sister M. Augusta, S.S.N.D. is moderator of the Club. Members of this group are the following: Eleanor Theis, Teresita Sanders, jean Marie Prosser, Evelyn Ersch, Rita Mae Ardiff, Barbara Barnhart, Rosina Do Mann, Rose Mary lfey, Marie Gonzales, Mary Evelyn Hamel, Mary jane Herden, Mary Catherine Hopkins, Evelyn Kneupper, Bernice Kruciak, Catherine Marecic, Rosalyn Maurer, Dorothy Pawlik, Peggy Prosser, Alice Sievers, Virginia Tagle, Orlean Tinney, Marjorie Winters, Lois Prosser, Ruby Ann Schumann, Rosalie Demmer, Martha Haby, Geraldine Hopkins, Keithley joseph, Helen Kasberg, Irene Saucedo, Virginia Small, and Adeline Theis. ,A I ,gk M xi L: V . .. PARENT-TEACHER CLUB We are very grateful for the grand work our Parent-Teacher Club has done this year. Not only has the organization been one hundred per cent behind the student body, but it has operated il book exchange to enable them to secure their school books with as little trouble as possible, it has served breakfast on school mornings so that they could receive Holy Communion, it has given scholarships to outstanding students, and it has donated a considerable sum to the school fund. The high school students especi- ally appreciate the work which the Club has done for them socially, particularly in sponsoring a canteen every Sunday night for them and their Catholic friends. RADIO PROGRAM ln November the students of St. Gerard High School were asked to present a program over radio sta- tion KCOR.
