Editor's Note ...... Autographs ..... Supplement ..... The theme of the Accolade for 1975 is The Proud Knight. This theme is carried throughout the book by the art design from the front cover. The art is very simple: lt's just the head of a knight enclosed in a circle - a contemporary design But there's something special about it. Notice the tilt of the head, the stance. They signify pride. This theme and this design were chosen because the editors felt these were the best ways to get the point across the Knight of St. Francis de Sales High School has many reasons to be proud. Now, the reader may wonder, What makes the Knight proud? We wondered too. So we asked the Knights themselves. Here's what some of them said: I am proud to be a part of this untarnished tradition of the Knights. I am proud to be a Knight for to be a Knight you have to reason, and to reason is why we are what we are. when the students told us what they Wi: ' ' I l am proud to be a Knight because of the Christian leadership at St. Francis. I am proud to be a Knight because, although St. Francis may not be the best at everything it does, we still do it with pride. lt takes a special kind of person to be a t Knight. That's what makes us different, but i, that's what makes us better. There is always a hand out to help and a shoulder to lean on. I am proud to be a Knight because of the high academic and athletic standards of the school and its reputation among other schools as well. St. Francis is tops In everything, curricular as well as extracurricular. The teachers and classes are interesting. I strive for the best things. Here I am. We Knights, with an impenetrable armor of pride, stand together till the end. So there are many reasons. You've now read a few. You'll see others in the rest of this book. You'll probably come to the conclusion we did: Every Knight's proud and every Knight has his reasons why. And now to explain the plan of the book. We listened expected to find in their book. We listened when the faculty and administration told us what they expected. And then we considered how we could give everyone what he wanted and still maintain good yearbook standards and make this an educational experience as well. We portioned out the pages in such a way as to reflect interest and importance. l We did what we thought was right and fair. l at W Don't judge us too harshly. Remember, we were only students, high school students, a bunch of amateurs trying to act like pros and learning as much as we could about history writing, journalism, graphic design, and photography. We tried. 1' j. K . 4' People should not be forgotten. Mrs. Dorothy Roberts, a school secretary for about twenty years, retired in February. She was part of the original crew that helped to establish St. Francis de Sales High School. She was always around when somebody needed help. From morning to night, she was always doing her job and more. Her concern about this school and its students is something that will always be appreciated. Well, we appreciate her too, Here's proof: we dedicate Accolade 1975 to Mrs. Dorothy Roberts. , I 9 0 e ' Q U Culture is hard to define. The band has often been called the backbone of school spirit, and with good reason. No other group can work the students and team into a frenzy so quickly. ln addition, the pep band, a small group which performs at sports events which take place in the great indoors, is composed of members of the main band who play quick and snazzy tunes to psyche up the team and the students. Finally, a group of athletic Knights have shown interest in one of the most popular sports in America and have established the hockey club, competing successfully against area schools. The range of activities is wide, but the basic requirements for participation are few. The Knight swimmers finished a brilliant season by ending up third in the state, one point from second, behind powerhouses Cincinnati St. Xavier and Upper Arlington. The Knights went undefeated in regular season dual meets except for one defeat at the hands of Xavier. Honors of a different kind were given to the Relay Team when they were automatically labeled All-American in state competition. The team included Marc Schlatter, Terry Powell, Flick Smenner, and Nick Daudelin. Schlatter was also named an All-American in breast stroke competition. Consideration for All-American was given to Powell for the 100 yard back stroke, and to the Free Relay Team, consisting of Powell, Daudelin, Bob Ward, and Mike Wohl. 's sw! 6 , Humorous interpretation is a type of speech that allows the participant great freedom to express his emotions. Along the top of the page, Gary Franklin shows frustration, surprise, disappointment, fascination and happiness. At left, Mike Kenney practices his original oration in which he discusses that eternal weakness of students -the urge to cheat. Coach Villers takes careful notes in order to help Mike improve his speaking style. From left to right, Dave Andryc, John Rockwell, and John Priebe observe Mike as they await their turns. Many hours of practice are needed to polish a single speech. 79 :DDQ gr- ' ?'. ,-,1.. This year, our extemporaneous speakers placed at dozens of tournaments. Especially noteworthy was Mark Mandula, who distinguished himself at prestigious tournaments in Atlanta and Pittsburg, among others. The debate team placed first at tournaments in Cincinnati and Akron. At the state qualifying tournament at Bowling Green University, eight members of the forensics team qualified for the State Championship Tournament to be held in Columbus. They were Jack Mandula, Kevin Moenter, Joe Kolanko, and Bob Busse in debateg Mark Mandula, Brian Kenney, and Mike Beckmann in extemporaneous speakingg and Gary Franklin in humorous interpretation. For the second consecutive year, St. Francis won the district debate championship at Ohio University. By finishing first in that tournament, the debate team of Kolanko and Busse qualified for the National Championship Tournament to be held in June in Indianapolis, Indiana. Brian Kenney narrowly missed qualifying for the national finals by finishing in second place in extemporaneous speaking. The next goal of the students is to win a state championship. Since it is possible to qualify for the national finals by finishing first in the state, the current season for much of the team may still not be finished when this book comes out. 81 Intramural Champs FOOTBALL POPCORN BOWL CHAMPS: HR 207: First How: Ken Hoj- nacki. Education at St. Francis becomes deeper and broader over four years, but there are many joys of discovery and surprises which can be fully experienced only by freshmen. Most freshmen face probably the most demanding curriculum they have ever experienced. They are required to study religion, English, history, science, a foreign language, and algebra. Since St. Francis is a college preparatory school, the subjects are designed to prepare the students for more advanced study, both here and in college. The religion course, for example, stresses the study of the Bible while algebra prepares the student for an additional three years of math. As the pictures show, the freshmen seem to enjoy their courses and seem to gain a great deal from them for both the present and the future. 98 'N Mg :Q N. 5.15-.?' 'I XQKWQL L hi if: -If if 9 'll V.. The mathematical, linguistic, and religious principles, which they learned as freshmen, are now elaborated. ln addition, the sophomores study history and either biology or chemistry. The sophomore year is the last structured year that the Knights have. Before getting involved in the more varied courses open to seniors and juniors, they learn the basics in a wide range of subjects necessary for academic development. They attempt fluency in foreign languages, familiarity with the scientific methods, and an appreciation for both fiction and non-fiction in literature class. They also work on basic composition and speech skills. 116 .JJ i k .6 Tim Borrell stops by the bookstore before his first period class s',,,'E,1..,.'1 2- ,qw 5 ea'.:-Lewslg i 'ii pr: vii? i 2- Q . . 4 . 5 ' Q 3 T L Q W V 1 1 ?' l Q - .lm Father James Doll gives an explanation about finding value . .H 1. ,' 1 '-1 tw ' my . ,S ai' ,r ,. . They are also required to study the traditional courses, like geometry and English, but the choice of specific fields within most areas is a wide one, both officially and at the discretion of the teacher in the classroom. lt is in the junior year that students really become aware of what they must prepare for. The thought of college looming in the future motivates many students to pursue their studies with new or renewed vigor. As they learn in ethics class, man needs a purpose, a goal. Whatever that purpose happens to be, most students seem to find it in the junior year. 132 ' X -V .nam ff! Many thinkers have expressed this truth in one way or another, but St. Francis seniors recognize, in some way, that this is why education is so valuable. The senior courses are wide-open and most seniors are motivated by personal interests. Many courses are identical to college courses, and many are taken for personal enrichment. Seniors study poetry, calculus, advanced courses in chemistry and biology, religion, French, German, Latin, physics, and social science courses as varied as the field itself. lt is a diverse and interesting curriculum for a diverse and interesting group of students. bw, Matt Delorio uses some free time to conquer picture developing John Muller, Jeff Wingate, Dave Gorny spur crowd on at a game. 7, W, 7 Y, , , , 7 4l -ue ii 150 ef 'H X, Doggedly pursuing chemistry lab work, Tom Dreeze pushes on. swf' Father Chrzanowski discusses a teen-age problem in religion.
