The caterpiller. Small, insignificant, it pulls its tiny, undeveloped being along the ground. It searches. And its search is a common one. The object of its determined struggle? A place. A niche. A branch. A twig. Somewhere to put its cocoon. Somewhere to fulfill the purpose for which it was created: somewhere to grow and change. For it is a time for metamor- phasis. The caterpiler enters the metamorphic state. The' moth or the butterfly leaves it. Ev- erything depends upon what goes into the cocoon. The search is a common one. The object of the determined struggle? A place. A niche. A high school. St. Francis. Somewhere to put a cocoon built not of leaf and thread, but of thought and action. Somewhere to fulfill the reason men were set upon earthzjsome- where to grow and change in perspective, in maturity, in that eternal pursuit of Know- ledge. For it is a time for metamorphasis. Metamorphasis - change. A boy of 14 will enter his high school career, a success or a failure will emerge from it. lt will all depend upon what goes into that cocoon. Adolescence is such a cocoon. The changes made are dictated solely by the individual. A butterfly - or a moth - result from those changes. The somewhere is St. Francis. It is the branch upon which are built hopes and dreams. Everything depends on the indi- vidual: the academics, the extracurricularsp the successes, the failures. Adolescence is a cocoon. We are that cate-rpiller. The world is an oyster. lt is up to us to make ourselves its pearl. john McGowan 74
