Small, insignificant, it pulls its tiny, undeveloped being along the ground. It searches. And its search is a common one. The object of its determined struggle? A place. A niche. A branch. A twig. Somewhere to put its cocoon. Somewhere to fulfill the purpose for which it was created: somewhere to grow and change. For it is a time for metamor- phasis. The caterpiler enters the metamorphic state. The' moth or the butterfly leaves it. Ev- erything depends upon what goes into the cocoon. The search is a common one. The object of the determined struggle? A place. A niche. A high school. St. Francis. Somewhere to put a cocoon built not of leaf and thread, but of thought and action. Somewhere to fulfill the reason men were set upon earthzjsome- where to grow and change in perspective, in maturity, in that eternal pursuit of Know- ledge. For it is a time for metamorphasis. Metamorphasis - change. A boy of 14 will enter his high school career, a success or a failure will emerge from it. lt will all depend upon what goes into that cocoon. Adolescence is such a cocoon. The changes made are dictated solely by the individual. A butterfly - or a moth - result from those changes. The somewhere is St. Francis. It is the branch upon which are built hopes and dreams. Everything depends on the indi- vidual: the academics, the extracurricularsp the successes, the failures. Adolescence is a cocoon. We are that cate-rpiller. The world is an oyster. lt is up to us to make ourselves its pearl. john McGowan 74 e P eople 7 . Father Healy - Uncle Bob: e 1 Every institution needs a leader . . . overseeing activities, stimulating new programs and overall growth and mirroring injustice or discontent. At St. Francis this multi-faceted role is played by Fr. Robert Healy. Our most ardent fan, our most tireless innovator and our most sincere critic, Fr. Healy is more than a nominal leader - he lives for the success of the St. Francis community. KWH? wear The Vice Squad The neccessary task of overseeing the day-to-day operation of St. Francis falls to two extremely well qualified individuals. Fr. james Prentice is the Vice-Principal in charge of Academics, handling such programs as visitation and tutoring. Mr. Richard Mattingly deals with student workers, and plays a vital part in arranging the numerous activities of the St. Francis community. MF 800 To Deal With The task of the Discipline team is a thankless one. They are either too strict or too lenient, too involved to judge fairly or too impersonal. They have a function to perform, a code to enforce, and this enforcement necessarily sets the tone of the whole St. Francis community. The tone of 1973-74 was one of great communication, of different groups working toward common goals, and a great deal of this success is attributable to Fr. Thomas Landgraff, Fr. Dave Whalen and Fr. james Cutter. When dealing with 800 individuals it is often difficult to maintain both order and rapport. The achievement of these goals stands as a monument to these men. Guidance, The Catalyst For Change Change. Expansion. Confusion. Guidance. From the cocoon of a young freshman, St. Francis consistently produces young men with eyes on the future. The St. Francis Guidance Department has the personnel to give both a long and short view of maturity. Mr. Don Wyper deals with standardized testing, Fr. Rich Forti handles tall tasks of applying to small schools with big tuitions, and Mr. A.T. falias Bugsi Moran handles scheduling with assists from Fr. Cecil O'Donnell and Fr. Dominic Finn. X -. Many times the basic idea of com- munication is lost in a maze of gerunds, participles, and abla- tive absolutes, making English seem more like a foreign lan- guage than a native tongue. Literature must, at times, be translated before it can be analyzed . . . a native tongue indeed! The English headmas- ters at St. Francis include Fr. William Fisher, Fr. james Pre- ntice, Fr. Edward Chrzanowski, Rev Mr. Pat Geraghty, Gene Antoszewski, Larry jankowski and Robert Stucker. Hypothesis - Experiment- Data - Guess? Every student at St. Francis is aware of this format. Whether it be lntro!Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Geol- ogy, we appear hopelessly en- tangled in a web of confusion. Coccous or Bacillus, atom or molecule, velocity or accelera- tion, or fossil or something, science with all of its exact- ness is still a guessing game: ls this your life? hosted by Fr. Thomas Landgraff, joseph Sevenich, and Dennis Graves, What's my ion? sponsored by Fr. john Ebenhoeh and A.T. talias Bugsi Moran, Physics - Mission Impossible con- ducted by the same Mr. Moran and Fr. john Gussenbauer, or As the world turns courtesy of Mr. Larry jankowski. When entering St. Francis, one yields his option to pass or play, and so it seems that these game shows will continue to be among the highest in the rat- ings. A new program in.English made pos- sible a selection of over 40 dif- ferent courses. A progressive Geology program was initiated which includes seminars and a number of field trips. Finally, the Monday Evening Religion Program which was so suc- cessful last year has been re- fined in order to allow greater development and academic freedom. 3-. 213+ fR? :f H- 51 ' -5 if 322 :QM 25 1 K Fix, PQ: f f: 'f 1 V Q3 i T5 'W 3 S .V A ...N MQ- ,,,.,, W V v 4 du dv Wllaszl-lullaszl V2 This is Logical? Many a student's journey through St. Francis is ham- pered by mental meanderings in the frustrating field of mathematics. Freshmen are taught basic strategy, sopho- mores are educated in more advanced theory, but spend some time off on tangents, juniors are asked to prove the unimaginable, and Seniors learn the intricacies of func- tion magic. If at any time one becomes discouraged - losing his logic and patience some- where in an insoluable equa- tion, it would be good to re- member the words of our fear- less leader Fr. Dominic Finn and his cohorts Fr. Cecil O'Donnell, Fr. Richard Ank- enbrandt, Fr. james Cutter and Mr. Timothy Horne - We' re not supposed to be able to do these things anyway. W, WJAZMW J WWMM fflwxffmi W - W W Mini? 28 Languages: A Taste of the Exotic Languages are often difficult to learn because they are dynamic. The same can be said for the members of the foreign language department at St. Francis, now all male. Besides a superb foreign studies prog- ram, the language and culture of France, Germany, Russia, and ancient Rome can be studied. Often included in the course outlines are audiofvisual presentations, and even an occasional bowling or mixology lesson. The perpet- rators in this field are Fr. joseph Baraniewicz, Br. Richard Eberle, Mr. juergen row, Fr. Dave Whalen, Fr. Forti, and Fr. Ll. Sottek. 29 A journey into Days of Future Past lf we accept the notion of man's existence as a social being, then the role of Social Studies becomes strikingly ap- parent. Rather than a drilling of each social concept, a stu- dent at St. Francis receives an overview - a look into the past, social experiences in the present, and an occasional glance into the future. We are no longer held captive by vol- uminous texts, but rather are more concerned with expand- ing our outlook. The St. Fran- cis community is fortunate to have such diverse members as Fr. Nicholas Koelzer, Mr. Don Kober, Mr. jim Robinson, Mr. Paul johnson and Mr. lon Wozniak to provide guidance through the indistinct path- ways of time. 31 Religion: More Than just Studying Religion, more than just another department at St. Francis, exists as a way of life making the ordinarily hectic existence just a little more bearable. The Religion de- partment is one ofthe more innovative, arranging social work projects and adding a feminine viewpoint through the Monday Evening Religion Program for Seniors. The talented troupe which mas- terminds this operation in- cludes Fr. jim Doll, Fr. john Gussenbauer, Fr. Edward Ch rzanowski, Fr. Dave Wha- len, Fr. Richard Forti, Fr. james Sottek, Fr. Thomas Landgraff, T. l., Sr. jane Con- nors and Sr. Joanne juhasz. College-Bound Brains The diversified St. Fran- cis curriculum offers a fantastic opportunity for the achievement-minded student. Slected juniors and Seniors work with a flock of experienced in- structors, searching for the keys to success on the Advanced Placement tests. Fr. Dominic Finn guides his charges toward a greater unsderstandi ng of differentiation and inte- gration in good ol' Calcu- lus. Fr. William Fisher tries to pass on his su- perior command of English grammar and analytic in- terpretation. Fr. john Ebenhoeh and Mr. Larry janowski share their wealth of scientific knowledge and methodology with the Advanced Chemistry and Biology students. The culture and literature of Germany and France are exam- ined in depth by students un- der the expert tutelage of Herr juergen Mudrow and Pere joseph Baraniewicz. - , , A y . 35 The Tangible Studies Lest anyone get the impression that St. Francis deals solely in at the theoretical areas of learn- t i t ing, some acknowledgement should go to the courses which serve to sharpen more mechanical, anyway. Val Glinka and Dennis Graves supervise the physical educa- tion classes for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Mr. Mattingly teaches a course in Mechanical Drawing and Br. Charles Dulin drills his typing classes, showing them the finer points of a much- manhandled art. p 1 37 Things to be done if Things to be done T' Things to 96 cv C 0 C CD Q O 'I'-J U5 on E .c I- 99 CD C O U ES 2 Fall U1 DD C LE I- 96 CD C O T5 CD L O -I-9 an DO C E T i- ee Things to be done 'k Things to be done Pk Things 38 be done X Things to be done ii Things to be done it -I j' i 5 UQ U7 .-i- O C- CD Q. It is a way of Life. Close, But No Cigar After having spotted the season two losses through hard-fought, narrowly-lost battles with Whitmer and Sandusky, the 1 973 offering of the St. Francis football department came of age. By growing in experience and determination from their previous campaigns, the gridiron gang steamrolled their way through Central's stubborn squad, 7-6, and intothe heart ofthe Blue Division via 62-O and 14-8 wins over Libbey and Waite, respectively. The next contest aroused many of St. Francis' athletic supporters, the game was against St. john's for what would later prove to be a berth in the Shoe Bowl. The Knights came up 7 points short, as they were shut out by a powerful Titan Team. Wins over Stritch and Bowsher ended the season on a winning note, as the squad put the year to bed with a 6-3 record. W 43 Our 1973 Cross Country team was far and away the best in St. Francis history. The harriers recorded an impressive 13-1 slate, and advanced several individuals to the District and State meets. Even though these dedicated athletes are motivated primarily by determination and personal satisfaction, it is safe to say that the sparkling efforts put forth by jim Deckelman and Al Pinkleman deserve recognition. It is also fitting that Gary Bryan be given special credit for his high finish in the Districts and 33rd placefinish in the State meet, and that Coach Pat Geraghty be lauded for guiding the harriers toward their successes. 44 45 I 46 nights feast before battle This year's Homecoming Dance could have een renamed the Homecoming Phenomenon. nnovation and the widespread desire to actively UDDOFT such a break with tradition made the the overwhelming success that it was. dinnerfdance attracted a record crowd, which delved into delectable delights and reveled in the resonating rock gl roll repertoire of Toad Flax. The insuperable frenzy of Homecoming weekend was immeasurably heightened by the presence of the pre-game rally and the Game Day parade. At the rally, a resounding volley of cheers signified the inevitable explosion of Knight enth usiasm, the vocal uproar shook the very foundation of the gymnasium. The Sunday morning procession to DeVilbiss stadium was reminiscent of the days of old, when such a massive mobilization of manpower was a common sight on its way to the Holy Land. I ., Jn. .tgg l 50 'VX The Stage Setters Every successful endeavor is based upon hard work, but there are times when this work goes unhearalded. Such is the case with the Stage Crew for St. Francis' Dramatic productions. While the thespians are reveling in the well-deserved applause, the stage crew headed by Mr. Robert Stucker and Br. Richard Eberle must remain content with quiet satisfaction, knowing that without them, the show would indeed not go on. 53 if you can... For years upon years, the fall play has dealt solely with comedy. It almost became a tradition. Until someonerealized that even traditions have their beginnings. That realization had a, pardon the expression, dramatic effect upon the choice of play this fall, Catch Me If You Can, basically a melodrama, extended the scope ofthe departmentto include the element of tragedy. Director Gene Antoszewski placed the fate of the experiment into the hands of an experienced group of actors: jim Loeffler, john McGowan, Chris Burkhardt, Gene Williams and jay Nussel. The capabilities of newcomers Cathy Cothrel and Martha Hanley rounded out the cast. A cast of a few thousands under Mr. Robert Stucker and Bro. Richard Eberle succeeded in creating one of the finest sets to ever grace a high school stage. As production assistant Mike Mayer would say: No notes tonight. The production was a success. l 54 Y Row 1: R. Smenner, B. O'Conor, R. Wohl, l. Restivo. Row 2: C. O'Conor, I. Bertolina, K. Stevens, M. Schlatter. Row 3: M. Wohl, M. Hensien, M. Henehan, B. Ward, B. Co-captains Tom Gerken and Bob Sikorski provided the kind of floor leadership which allows Knight supporters to look into the not so distant future with the proverbial great expec- tations. uf' aff amvnsm,W,Q,1.A.-.- 4 1 64 A Mat ls A Lonely Place Wrestling is a lonely sport, there is no way to avoid that conclusion. Running and lift- ing from afternoon til evening every day. Walking out onto a mat before friends, enemies alike solely to place one's pub- lic and private respect in jeopardy. To win - alone or to lose - alone. To many the record became 122-1-O. A loss is a step back: perhaps it is the wrong direction, but it enables a sense of perspective. The wrestler builds for the team, for the school. He may lose, but the team will win. A thankless task it is, and the tri- bute belongs to the wrestler, whomever he may be, for it is his sacrifice, his isolation, which win the day. Student Council - sponsored dances relieve a multifaceted burden for the men of St. Francis. While producing much of the SC revenue, dances offer the opportunity to escape from everyday pres- sures as well as create the so- cial occasion to meet with members of the opposite sex. A good deal of the credit for our successful dances belongs to jim McGowan and Galaxy Productions, who also super- vise the procurement of musi- cal magicians for special events - Homecoming, Christmas dances and the junior!Senior Prom Knights Boogie! For in the autumn months, when days getter shorter and trees turn barer, and everybody finds himself back behind a desk and an eight-ball, the programs which are grouped under the heading Intramurals slowly begin to take shape. A football bounces across the 40-yard line. A freshman follows it. A tennis ball dives across the net. jeff LaPlant is not far behind. Football. Tennis. Fall. Father jim Caesar Sottek. What can you say when you've said it all? 1 Knight's opponents all we A new aquatic sport was christened this year, one hose cornerstone is firmly implanted in our swimming program. The Aqua-Knights, as have come to be called, have compiled an record despite fierce competition from other water polo teams they confronted. With Dennis Graves at the helm, the team has through the season 12-1. Their only setback at the hands of Ann Arbor Huron, who the win to avenge an earlier loss to the Buoys from Bancroft. With Senior co-captains Bill O'Conor and Bob Wohl providing leadership and junior Chris johns providing points, the Aqua- Knights averaged 15 goals a game to their oppo- nents' 4. The State Championship proved a most satisfying knight cap as the SFS entry easily dunked their rivals in the waters of Euclid Ohio. Dominance is difficult in sports. But the team has demonstrated that it possesses both the will and the way. is-f-is , 71 Vi.. K: ,iw Nah A, , AF.,Eu,,i4. ,, . r .k-,, V, in fk 4. W. I. I .
