This is the Administration. At St. Francis this responsibility is invested in and ably handled by: Fr. Robert Healy, principal, with, Fr. Richard McLernan and Mr. Richard Mattingly, vice principals. The duties of their offices range from the concreteness of finances to the abstractness of student spiritual life. And, although the brunt of criticism concerning the state of the school falls on these men's shoulders, remember, in the words of Fr. McLernan, That was my first mistake. . , . To succeed in the world today, a person must have more than a superficial understanding of his religion. The faculty here at St. Francis is dedicated to help students find where they are and how Christian ideals come into play in their life. ln religion class the greatest knowledge of all can be sought and, hopefully, attained. This knowledge concerns one's personal relationship with God and other people. 19' English Means Und erstanding Fr. Prentice: English II 81 IV. S.F.S. students learn to value the written word in literature through the efforts of well-developed English department. Teachers strive to instill in their students an appreciation of their literary heritage, an awareness of the modern uses of our language and a firm foundation in literary values. Not only does the student learn to value the well- written word but he also realizes that good grammar is essential to the expression of ideas and statements. Application of specialized techniques is attempted in the studs-nt's own creative writings, while research into great plays and their unique authors opens yet another phase of the English program. Fr. Chrzanowski: English lll. 21 lVlath: A Function of Anaylsis and Logic l One thing all students at St. Francis have in common is math. No matter whether you are a freshman or a senior, your plight is the same. Everyday as you walk into math class, you find yourself deluged by undecipherable equations and formulae. Class after class, the pieces seem to fit together and by test time a semi-coherent idea of the material exists in your mind. Before you even get a chance to wonder whether you passed or failed, the next class presents an even more complicated problem in the next chapter. While students continue to ask questions and teachers continue to reach into their vast mental stores for the answers, math remains the same, difficult. Science Provides Opportunity to Understand Physical World The lab is quiet. The only signs of the activity which occurred during the day lie now as remnants, scattered across desks, floor and board. Chipped beakers, rusty ring stands, half-erased equations, dirty test tubes, nearly dissected frogs, and rising yeast- are all stepping stones to scientific understanding of our world. In our laboratories, Knights explore vast new horizons through practical experience. ,,-M ,. I X59' Fr. IVlcLernan: Physics. lVlr. This aspect of the curriculum has matured and is no longer simply endless lists of names, dates and places to be memorized. The goal of this department has shifted and now emphasis is on a firm understanding of the events which shape the course of mankind. With this understanding the Knights of St. Francis are prepared to meet the question of where man is going, secure in the Knowledge that he will be capable to face that challenge of the future. ll . . l . lVlr. Languages Develop Cultural, Linguistic Appreciation The room which houses the study of foreign language is a mental gymnasium. lt is herewhere students flex the muscles of their minds to master a second language. The barbells of this gymnasium range from declensions to conjugations. Just as physical dexterity is achieved in gym so is mental acuity achieved in language class by finding exactly the right idiom to express one's view clearly. Though the benefits of gym class may give way to beer bellies of the future, the benefits of a foreign language will live on in the student indefinitely. 28 Fr. Sottek: Latin ll. Fr. Advanced Courses Gffer Greater t ,F Challenge to Students A day in the life ofa student who takes advanced courses can't be all that bad. ln first period calculus, exciting -derivatives and integrals, along with Fr. Finn's humorous quips make the hour speed right by. Frequent heated discussions iabout anythingi make the participants in Mr. Gavin's English class lose all track of time. During the last periods, the chemists and biologists converge on the basement. Fathers Landgraff and Ebenhoeh have devised ingenious experiments, which there never seems to be enough time to complete. These advance placement courses besides causing the day to scurry by more importantly prepare students for their upcoming role as a college student. i Z if i mf-Eiga ' AI, 4 .- ..f f- - .-fu,-rf ,. r' - ' Mr. Gavin: English I, Advanced English . One vital aspect of any college preparatory school is the Guidance Department. Under the direction of Father John Mclvlenamin, Saint Francis has one of which it can be proud. Every resource is utilized to prepare the student for choosing both a college and vocation. Books, brochures, the College View Deck, the Admission's Search Kit and expert counseling by Father lvlclvlenamin and lVlr. Don Wyper guide our perplexed young men through the tangle of admission, registration, financial assistance and all the other technicalities of approaching college life. For the underclassmen, Fathers Finn and McLernan keep high school life on an even keel by the schedule and course manipulation necessary for the well rounded curriculum Saint Francis is noted for. Staff Keeps All Running Well Year in and year out, the members of the office staff and maintenance crew remain the unsung heroes of day to day existence. These underrated people, working quietly in the background, complement the entire faculty by providing an atmosphere of cleanliness and efficiency, necessary in an institution such as St. Francis. This was an appropriate setting for the Knights' annual Homecoming dance, since the theme for the dance was B.C. , the famous cartoon strip. Inside this prehistoric panorama the Knights ' 'and their dates dance to the music of Knife , a brilliant rock group, while B.C. and his cartoon pals watched from the walls of the gym. Near the end of the evening, John Sturtz announced that the 1971 Homecoming Queen was Marcia Perdeau, a senior from Saint Ursula. Those who drove by the school on Bancroft Street could see a huge Beat Central sign, which hung from the windows of the school. This sign, the work of some spirited seniors, was a symbol of Knight pride. On Saturday night, a rally was held in our gym to focus all the spirit on the game Sunday. The spirit ran high, as various cries to kill Central were chanted. Coach Mattingly and a few senior football players gave their expert opinions of the game, much to the excitement of the small but noisy crowd. Many assorted floats and a loudly cheering mob of Knights assembled for the annual parade to T.U. Once there, they did not have to wait very long for something to cheer about. Early in the first quarter, Herman Price broke loose on a forty yard touchdown run through the Irish defense. Bob O'DonnelI kicked the extra point and the Knights led the Irish 7-O in the battle for the Irish-Knight. Central came back when they scored on a long passplay in the second quarter. They then faked a kick and passed for two points to take a 8-7 lead. The game settled down to a defensive struggle with neither team scoring again, and the Knights lost the Irish Knight to their rivals on Cherry Street. 14 ' ,' .--f ., yn ., .v - - ag j 47'gq 4 ,fl f, ,f f UQ' , WS5' A ' ,if ff lff'f4'!p .. - fri -' V 1 mf .r W, fffffj If , .J f -'Tv f fr. i i ff ,.., wi, f - vw r fl, 'Y ,i, ,,, 41, Q.: M , f- 'i , 1 ig r.'z'+'1 ' fi f 1 V, np. ,I , , ., . 1. , if ' 4- 3 yf. This was to be the year SFS lost it's first dual meet in quite some time. They rose to the occasion, winning them all and going over the century mark in consecutive victories. Led by Ron Soviar and Jeff Guyton, our grapplers finished second in the C.l.T. and made a fine showing in the city and state tournaments. Four fine senior Iettermen are back for another year of trying to knock that elusive little white ball into that tiny hole. They are-Jeff Myers and Fritz Reifert, both All- City last year, and Tim Jones and Mark Walters. Vince Marinelli, another senior, shows much promise. There are two returning junior Iettermen to augment the above- Marshall Bennett and Mark Tincher. Last year proved a little disappointing, but provided much experi- ence for a young team. Lets go to the hopl was the familiar cry that colored the world of many Knights and their friends - female, naturally. For those that felt that one is the Ioneliest number, or needed some music to watch girls by, the weekend evening dances provided a great time at reasonable prices. To keep students from dancing in the streets, the hops were open to everyone, even gypsies, tramps, and thieves - provided, of course, that they were attired in a tie and a decent pair of pants. Once inside, the sounds of silence were shattered by the sound of music, and while underclassmen may have been a little uptight, having some trouble trying to dance to the music, the Seniors came completely undun and let it all hang out. The gym floor was generally so crowded that one had to share the land in order to twist and shout. Finally, at evenings end when all that remained was no time, there were chants of either Let's dance on or I can't get no satisfaction. All these good vibrations were made possible by two members of good standing of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band, the dance commissioners, Jack Brunner and Larry Hanley. The swinging Knights, led by seniors Jim Gerken, Jim Korsnack, and Ken Smith, should be able to waIkl' their way through city league competition and onto bigger and better things. Coached by Jim Kubacki, the baseballers should once again make the most of their opponents mistakes. A prom is an event, and like any event it has its planning, preparations, frustrations and finally its realization. But the feature that causes it to be so important, so enduring and so immensely special transcends all these superficial structures that seemingly make a prom. The essence lies in the memory of the occasion and how it remains with the individual. For in everyone's prom there are moments to be cherished, those to laugh at, a few that are nostalgic and just to be enjoyed. It is a Magical Mystery Tour that one seldom takes time to imagine, where everyone looks and acts a little different but is still the same, where time flies by and stand still in the same instant and pleasant conversation with good company is the order of the evening. This, then is is a prom, a time to be experienced and then remembered by all in his own perspective and this memory, when fixed, lives on and ferments through the years. Fr. The annual mass and breakfast was simply moved up a few months. The mass, held at St, Pius was also attended by the se- niors' mothers who were invited to share in this important event. Following the service, everyone retired to Gladieux l and ll for breakfast and pleasant conversation. After everything was all over, the butterflies, fidgeting with the new rings and finding out that everyone else had a mother too the Class of '72' began to walk a little prouder, with the knowledge that now they finally were seniors.
